I'm only asking because I saw on Twitter lol shout out to @Congo-243 who's regularly on twitter haha. I saw someone tweet saying Awilo's music isn't that good compared to the rest and it's non congolese people that enjoy his music, with a majority of people agreeing, so what's everyone's thoughts?

I think that there’s a bit of a Bad agenda on Awilo that he doesn’t make “proper” Congolese music because of his big songs like Karolina which are more commercial maybe but he has some very good songs and albums that are overlooked like Moto Pamba and Kafou Kafou also Coupe Bibamba has some very nice songs

It's mostly true. Awilo did not play classic congolese music.

When Awilo was at his peak in the mid-late 90's/early 2000, people in Kin knew about him but his music was not played like that.

He never had at home the HUGE success he had in West Africa.

Awilo Longomba is a great artist. He does not have a great voice but he can sing. He has made some classics that some folks do enjoy hearing.
He knows how to make good international sounds like Bundelele or Superman. They are very good international sounding songs. He also made a great generique Gate Le Coin which many bands use the animations like Zaiko Langa Langa. BTW the animator was singer Guy Guy Fall which shows how good Awilo at putting singers in what position to do on his songs.

Here is one song that you need to play all the time. Kwanga Pamba. This song is great with guitar of Caen Madoka.

He is the real reason why Congolese people music is respected in West Africa but like BM since he doesn't make traditional music for Congolese people he is not like Werra, JB, Koffi and the others, the fact is that if we want Congolese music to be saved more artist should follow the Awilo, BM, Fally, Innoss and Koffi route to try to get to international audiences instead of just making music for Kin, every Congolese artist who stepped out of the Congolese audience to get international without having solid success in Kin have always been ignored (Awilo, Dr. Sakis, BM, Remmy Ongala) or hated (Innoss) the fact that Koffi and Fally can get away with this is because they first cemented their success especially Koffi in Kin with classics before trying to go international.

Awilo isn't the reason why Congolese music is respected. Congolese music was already respected along time ago since the 50s, Grand Kalle Jeff having huge succes with his band African Jazz and being one of the rare artists of his generation to fill stadiums in Ghana, Sierra Leone & Liberia (Dr Nico would later profit from that succes when he created African Fiesta with Tabu Ley and later when theyh split make in that part more recordsales than in Kinshasa where his rival Tabu Ley had more popularity ). Then you had Tabu Ley who was often invited by presidents to give private concerts, the French song Fetiche was written by Senegalese president Leopold Sedar Senghor. Tabu Ley used to be the king in Abidjan (he even dedicated a song called Bel Abidjan) until that Koffi Olomide dethroned in the early 90s. Not forgotting OK Jazz who had huge huge succes in Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Benin, Niger, Togo and the rest of West Africa.

Awilo just descends of the Souskous-wave, continuing the succes Aurlus Mabele, Diblo Dibala, Kanda Bongo Man, Dr Sakis and Sam Mangwana left.

Congolese people didn't take Awilo serious, because after his first album (which had some buzz in the Congolese community, because of Awilo just having left Nouvelle Generation to start his solo career and the extrat in the VHS-version which had the furious Wemba attacking Stino and other musicians of Viva which led to the creation of La Nouvelle Generation) he was just making remix songs of Kids song and his texts being simple (Coupe Bibamba, Mombima ya Maman, a part of Abidjan Debout, Mwana Maman, etc.), while Congolese people want love songs with poetry and songs about life. How can you take a man like that serious? It's like a guy, doing a remix of the head-shoulders-kneens-toes song and all foreign people who don't understand it, going wild about it. But atleast it brough Awilo to many continents like Kanda Bongo Man & Aurlus Mabele and being the only artist in Nigeria to fill the National Stadium of Lagos, 3 days in a row. Awilo wanted to change his music by making also proper rumba-songs when recording Mondongo, but it was to late, because nobody in the Congolese community was taking him seriously.
