I always wonder what was his role in the band. Was he an admin or second boss. ? I dont recall seeing him singing along with the rest of the group ( carlito. Debaba juna  petit prince and nzaya) but still could hear his voice on audio songs  and sometime appear  for playback at ozrt ( tele zaire) ..
What was cause of his departure.?

Defao was always singing with the rest of the band.  I think that's because there was first only one concert Djomegadt uploaded on YouTube of them from 1986 and it was not the full version with them singing Mauvais Souvenirs. The same Djomegadt uploaded a concert from 1985 with Bozi, but Defao was then in Bozi's shadow. Defao didn't have a function he was just a normal singer like Debaba, Carlyto, etc. Choc Stars was founded in 1983 by Ben Nyamabo, Roxy Tshimpaka & Bozi Boziana. Ben Nyamabo was the president and Bozi Boziana was the lead singer until he left in 1985. Defao saw that his time arrived to start his own band, after the succes of the song Hitachi. So he decided to form his own band, to not to depend on zong-zing albums. But he was still open for collaborations with Choc Stars, which he also did later. He informed Ben that he would leave the band and said that he had 6 months the time to find a replacer for him, in meantime he was still performing with them until that the 6 months were over. Defao was already one of the main stars of the band back in 1986 with songs like Chagrin Dimone, etc, having succes but Hitachi made him bigger. Hitachi made him being voted as best star of the year in 1990.

to bad that they deleted Mengi Massamba's channel. Because he uploaded the full version of that concert in good quality and the entrance. I liked their entrace with the keyboard-player making that sound he did on Hitachi.

Defao was always floating around in the 1980s he worked with everyone. Koffi and him were very close in the 80s, Choc Stars never really recovered when Bozi left, although I believe  in this period they recorded some great songs. After Bozi's departure all the band members started having solo ambitions, Defao took his opportunity after the success of Hitachi and the gamble paid off. By the 90s choc stars was done as Defao's success was the coup de grace to the band.

My favourite ensemble from the 80s great memories, Les Vainqueurs still one of my favourite recording from them. The vocal control from Debaba(R.I.P) and carlyto Lassa is amazing only Dindo Yogo and Evoloko are comparable.

No, that's not true. They recovered. People tought that it was over for Choc Stars, when Ben Nyamabo fired Bozi, since that he was the lead-singer and 80% of the songs were coming for him. But Ben & Roxy were very smart. They recruited Debaba who was down after failing with his own band Historia Musica and they recruited Carlyto who came from OK Jazz. With then becoming more dangerous when Bozi Boziana was around. They tried also to recruited Lidjo Kwempa from Viva La Musica )who was then there the biggest star), by luring him with clohts. But it didn't work. Back in the days Ben Nyamabo was the boss of clothes shop Scrapa Uomo. Choc Stars became a teamwork band, while it when Bozi was there it was more a band with only him in the spotlights. Choc Stars produced then classic songs like Mauvais Souvenirs, Pot Casse, Riana, Zikondo, Mbuma Elengi, Mokolo Mosusu. Jardin de mon Coeur, etc. and had the best chorus of Zaire. They were touring in Africa,Eur ope, a soldout LSC and they performed with Kassav.  Nobody had solo ambition. Debaba, Carlyto & Defao were recording solo albums to survive, which was allowed in Choc Stars contrary to other bands were it was strictly forbidden (Zaiko, etc.). At the end of the 80's Djuna Djanana, Carlyto already left and with Defao in 1990/91 it created big imbalance. They weren't able to recruit big stars from big bands like they used to do in the past with Djuna Djunana, Djo Mali, Petit Prince, etc. to replace them. With Wenge Musica hitting very hard with Kin E Bouge it brought a new era and made many bands having difficulties. Debaba became the main star of Choc Stars, but he failed to succeed with him singing and many things going wrong with him behind the scenes. With him ending up as a "frere en christ' making many VHS about he did, etc. Which meant the end of Choc Stars. Ben Nyamabo tried to bring Choc Stars back, but Bango Oyo Baye and Epaka Makasi but it flopped.
