This guy uploaded a video, but it has many errors, it seems to me these are digital errors of the capturing device when they imported the stuff from tape. I would like to ask him if he has the tape of this:

(the clip was originally posted on INA Congo channel by the Ingénieur but it has been taken down)

Ingénieur LZ is a young guy.  I won't give his real name because of privacy. But for his channel he got also a instagram page. https://www.instagram.com/ina.congo/?hl=nl

I'm sure that it's Rigo Makengo who removed the video, because it's him who brought the original VHS on the market. Like many other removed youtube-videos, he will after 1 year or months release an ugly DVD-version with bad quality while the majority prefers VHS-versions because of its nostalgia. Makengo surely realized after Defao died that Ingénieur LZ was making many views with his old VHS and not him which made being jealous. I watched the video 3/4 days ago and it had almost 300.000 views.

You say this stuff was released on a VHS? But was it an official concert release, like the ones Zaiko did many times in the last decade, or it was a kind of bootleg or someone copied it in the TV and that was circulating around?

It was normally concert performed for the Congolese television (Tele Zaire) at that time. I don't know if Rigo Makengo negotiated with Tele Zaire to buy the rights of that concert. Because back in the days guys like him and the late Bob Masua would copy images of Tele Zaire (I don't know if they negotiated with people working for Tele Zaire) and sell it illegally without the artist knowing it. For example the concert of Extra Musica at Studio Maman Ngebi made alot of money in Europe, but Roga Roga and Espe Bass didn't knew that a VHS of it was on the market until they came in Europe for the first time in 1996. The same for Shora Mbemba his concert for Variete Samedi Soir where the album got presented. Congolese actor Doudou Ngafura was mad when he discovered that copies were made from his movies with the Groupe Salongo and also French-translated versions in West-Africa. But stopped complaining until they gave him some peanuts.

But about Defao's concert for Tele Zaire in 1992. It was Rigo Makengo who brought it on the market. But there are still some short extracts of it on youtube. It just that Makengo doesn't know about it. Otherwise he would also deleted them.

Was the VHS was released around the same period of Makengo's version of Zaïko's 1975 OZRT Concert.

Zaiko's reissue of their concert at RENAPEC got released in 1993 by him and somewhere in 2004-2005-2006 a DVD-version got released. Defao's VHS got released towards the end of 1992 before that he got voted for the 3th time voted best of Zaire. It was the succes of the videotape that made Defao get a trip to Europe with his band in 1994 (back in those days it would take like 1 year to get in Europe when somebody had succes in Kinshasa instead of a few months).

But what I don't understand: why Rigo has a problem with these videos available on Youtube when they no more distribute these tapes? He is complaining about material that does not make money for him any more, no matter if it is uploaded or not. Also if he is not the legal copyright owner, he cannot have it deleted from youtube. You need to present a license for your claim to go through.

So what do you think, whom should I messge to get a copy of the tape? It is a good concert, but the way Ingénieur uploaded it is not very good, the dropouts are constant all along the video. Is there someone who is a well known collector or bootleg shops somewhere? I have a friend in Paris whom I could send to look around. If you don't want to mention names, send them to me in message, I will keep them confidential.

I once discussed with him about it on youtube, but he kept insisting that it was his right. He's self also not honest, because he was getting all royalties of Lofombo's album Confirmation of 2000 for years. Until that Lofombo discovered last year last hat he could get royalties through SABAM, a big fan explained him how music copyrights works. It made Lofombo being happy but also disappointed at the same time. This because he considered Rigo Makengo as a big brother since that they are from the same tribe and their family villages not being far from each other, while he just stole all his money in 21 years and Lofombo having paid all recording session of that album in Kinshasa and him having done nothing, just distributing the album.

I can just contact Ingenieur in private. I remember Ingenieur posting 5 years ago on his youtube channel that you could buy some of his videotapes. But I don't know if he still does it.  There plenty videos he had uploaded on youtube that disapeared. He also some videos who were audible first, but now are contains parts who are muted for 20 minutes or for a big part where the image is blocked. For example Papa Wemba's Olympia somewhere around the 55th minute the image and sound is blocked until the end or Zaiko's concert at Intercontinental of 1993 where a part of Dede is inaudible.

There's only one shop left which is in Saint-Denis. But I don't know the name anymore it only that it started with BG or BJ something like that. They still sell old videotapes of movies and concerts of the late 90s and 2000s. But don't believe that they have still Defao's concert at Tele Zaire of 1992. Apart from the videoclips of Phily Mbala, Sala Noki, Copinage, Tremblement de Terrre and Nessy de London, Defao videotapes of his concerts were already very hard to find before the closing of shops.  Except Defao's videotape of Abidjan, I never saw big events of Defao, for example the concert at Stade d'Amitie in Cotounou, his first concert at LSC in 1994, his concert in Montreal '99 or his shows at SOBs of New York being sold in a shop. It was always through his close friend that I saw some of his concerts in Kinshasa (1997-98) and I asking if I could copy them. I was surprised when Ingenieur uploaded a video of the same Rigo Makengo label "Clarys Music" of an African tour, Defao performing in Kenya, Cameroun and Burkina Faso. But filmed image not feeling really official but more backstage. Ingenieur must be careful, because this rare image risk to be deleted from youtube.

The shop is BH Electronic? A friend of mine was there (OT: he met Jordan Kusa there), they had new albums and some old cassettes from late 90s just like you said.

That is cool, maybe I will try to send someone there to check it if everything fails.

But meanwhile, Mfumu, could you ask Ingénieur about that concert tape? If the tape has the errors or not? The other segments available on Youtube does not have the constant clicking in the sound, nor the jumps, the image is worse though. So who knows...

He hasn't reacted yet.

About concert tapes. I remember him once saying in the comments when uploaded Werra's 34th birthday. That he had problems when trying to upload old videos to youtube, because the image often not going in sync with the sound. But he later managed to fix that. Some video he has are for a big part damaged. But he uploads them since that those videos are very rare and not available on the market He for example sadly didn't manage to upload the rare full videotape of Jamais Sans Nous-videoclips.

Yeah, like Ici Ca Va.. Fungola Motema there is a Jamais Sans Nous-VHS. Ingénieur only managed to upload Perseverer. Masudi is already since years on YouTube. The song Poupa where Nyoka Longo & the late Mboyo used to dance was also on YouTube, but it got deleted.

I had the Kin Kiesse DVD compilation (2003) which had Masudi and Poupa. I would have uploaded the videos in good quality but I lost the disc when I moved to another house
