Killed Emeneya's career. ? Wow. I'm not surprised I think it was a big mistake to do a pop album he should have stick to his Victoria roots. I guess Wenge Musica BCBG 4X4 ,El Paris,Quartier Latin, Nouvelle Génération were way ahead in term of popularity back in 1993-1994. Is it because of the flop of this album that he went silent for 2 years before the release of Pas de Contact in 1995 ?

My words were a little to hard lol. From the birth of Victoria Eleison in 1982, Emeneya was seen as the leader of the 3th generation, taking then Papa Wemba place as most popular artist of Zaire. But after the succes of Nzinzi things weren't going very well with Emeneya and journalists were writting bad articles about him and started to comparing him to the new Wenge Musica, nevertheless he was still the most popular artist of Zaire. But with him settling in France, he gave Wenge Musica alot of space and they started to take his place sementing a big fanbase in Kinshasa with also his friend Koffi Olomide slowly taking his place in Kinshasa and the solo-albums of Reddy Amisi, Stino Mubi & Joly Mubiala were making Viva La Musica number one in Paris, Brussels, Geneva and London in meantime Malembe Chant & Mabusele weren't able to defend his band.

Everbody was the most awaited album of 1993. But when it came out it flopped. Alot of people weren't liking the music-style of the album Only the song Nzila Velele and Bosobikali were doing it well. The Congolese press profited from it, started to critize him very hard and writing alot of bad articles about him. Writing things like "Emeneya lost his powers of Kikwit" or the most popular one "Emeneya throw his rhythm on the street and the youngsters of Wenge picked it up". Emeneya wanted also to start a world-career and added some female singers and professional instrumentalists to the band to upgrade their level, but the press saw it as as an occassion to write in the newpapers that he wanted to kill Victoria Eleison.

If the flop of Everybody was the reason of his 2 years silence ? I don't know. But it were hard times and Koffi started mocking him in the press, claiming that Emeneya wanted to perform with to get some succes back. The release of Pas de Contact (group album) didn't also really help to make a comeback with Victoria-fans started to say to Emeneya that it was time to go back to Kinshasa to get his throne back and some inspiration. They also started saying that Malembe Chant was killing Victoria because of him snichting and talking bad about bandmembers to Emeneya, but not being able to defend the band with his own songs, singing them all in the Minzoto Wella Wella-style which was pissing them off and saying that he wasn't worth to be a Victoria Eleison-member. Emeneya tried to make a comeback with Succes Fous going back to his roots and announced his return to Kinshasa, but the reception of the album was so/so, because of Emeneya doing the animation by his own while the public wanted to hear animations from atalaku's. The press continued writing bad about him. But suddenly Emeneya surprised them by getting received by more than 2 millions people in Kinshasa on his return, performed in a packed Salle de Congres of Palais du Peuple, confirmed his succes by performing in front of 50.000 people at Stade des Martyrs, perfoming at YMCA and touring in the 24 areas of Kinshasa,... with the release of Mboka Mboka putting him back on the track. But the press would write bad about him until his death.

@mvulusi96

I never understood the concept of "World Albums", because African artist often water down their style to appear more mainstream but their style is exactly what got them enough attention back home and enough to tour aboard.

If compared Kester's Everybody to the production of other albums released the same time abroad, you would see that it's too polished sonically (program drums and sterile guitar tones). I had my American friends listen to Kester's Everybody and Mboka Mboka, they prefered Mboka Mboka.

Look at that audience for Wemba, they're loving it! He just plays the music like he would for us.

I guess that those journalists were Wemba-fanatics who could not forget they way King Kester Emeneya gave them a hard time from 1982 until 1987, humilating Wemba also in those fara-fara concerts (Lubumbashi, VSS, Intercontinental & Palais du Peuple) with Papa Wemba being even forced to go on exil because of Emeneya's succes. So it was a way to take revenge and contaminating also their colleagues who were taking it blindly over.

The problem was also that he was staying long in Europe while his musicians were suffering, him taking long to release Longue Histoire while his collegues Koffi Olomide, Papa Wemba, etc. were releasing albums every year/every 6 months, having betrayers around him (JDK Decor, Mambo de Panama, etc.).

JDK Decor for example took 1 millions dollars of the money of Longue Histoire to let Papa Wemba perform at Bercy. Hence why Longue Histoire wasn't really well promoted despite his succes. Being eager to get alot of money, he put alot of ngulu's of the Bercy-list. But karma hit him very hard, because he would get arrested for the ngulu-affaire along with Wemba. Mambo de Panama (the man who recruited all the musicians before Emeneya's return in 1997) motivated Guy Moller, Anthony Sampaio, Zoe Bella, Sweet Elesse, Eric Masudi to leave Victoria and create their own band after having a conflict with Emeneya.

Emeneya wasn't aware of his staff members tricking him also Guy Moller and the rest made a very big mistake.
