There are two types/categories for commercial/private car sales in Tanzania. You can either buy a "duty paid" car in which case all the tax/duty liabilities are settled, or you can buy a DUTY FREE car for export to another country. Some institutions and individuals are also eligible to purchase duty free cars for use in Tanzania. These include diplomatic missions and religious institutions.

Duty free cars tend to be cheaper due to the fact that their price does not include the import duty. The price also excludes the "dumping tax" imposed on cars older than 10 year that are for the domestic market.

Duty free cars sold in Tanzania can be purchased in special customs bonded dealerships. These are spread throughout Dar es Salaam. Directory.co.tz lists reputable car dealerships and businesses in Tanzania. The website provides a useful tool for finding various businesses in the country. Some of the listed details include they physical address of the business and it's contact telephone numbers which can prove very useful.

Some popular models that are also available for purchase duty free include:
Toyota Probox | Toyota Prado | Toyota IST | Toyota Premio | Toyota Alphard | Subaru

The best part about purchasing a duty free car in Tanzania is that you can inspect the car in person. All you have to do is contact the dealer to confirm availability of the unit you are interested in and turn up at the showroom.
