Because all songs are in Lingala language, so in Swahili we say, "wanaimba kilingala (they're singing in Lingala)". We got lazy and just decided to shorten it and say, "wanaimba Lingala (they're singing Lingala)". And that's how we started calling Soukous/ Ndombolo/ Sebene "Lingala".
Its pretty much the same way we refer to all music from Tanzania as "Bongo"
This isn't the Beniko I know from the numerous videos I've watched him speak.
He's usually jovial, humorous, charismatic........
I'm not good in Lingala, just grasping a few words. But from the last 45 minutes of this interview, you'll note that there's sadness in his eyes, there's sadness in his voice, there's sadness in his posture........ I nearly cried.
Both are absolute classics especially to us music lovers. But unfortunately or fortunately for both they had to join bands because the solo career wasn't working out for them, which sucks for an artist. My question is if they were released during the time loads of guys went solo would it get the recognition it deserves?
The Animateur in "Decompte Final" definitely has to be Tutu Callugi....... that's his voice. Listen from somewhere around 3:00 minute.
But on a lighter note @Shamala, this was actually an EXCELLENT song in my opinion. The original Solo partition was played by Christian Solo "AirBag" (Ex-WMMM) and the Bass by Cedric Beton (an exceptionally gifted bassist).
@archos, Congolese Gospel Sebenes are waaay better, trust me. In Kenya, the "gospel" music we have is just plain secular music hidden by the fact that it gets played on Sundays
Now you got a good debate going. I am going to say not necessarily but he allow the sebene to become more useful for bands and even older bands like Bana OK. He was the one who created some great animations that other bands would copy and his voice made other bands get animators like him. Case in point Koffi Olomide. He got a Ekokota copycat with Quartier Latin. I forgot his name but he sounded like Robert Ekokota.
Finally. A video clip of the Voyage Remix (Album Terrain Eza Mine, 2000).
Mboka Liya and Tata Mobitch must have smoked some high grade joint when they shot this clip . Check minutes 5:36-5:43 and 5:50-5:57....... Direct diss to that other group ;D
