Nyinyi...watu wangu...my peoples...batu ba Congovibes...

tuchukuwe break kidogo hivi kwa hizo polemique na maneno mingi. Sisi wote tunapenda hii muziki inayoitua Rumba...inayoitua Soukous...itanaitua Ndombolo. Hiyo ndio kitu muhimu ama. As always, I come to these forums to clarify some things that I do not understand about the culture of this music that I love so much and more importantly, I come to these forums to find the music that is currently trending, the Congolese music that I should be listening to right now this March of 2019. Because above all else, it is because of Congolese music that we are here. So what are the Rumba and Sebene songs that I should be listening to right now? I am currently bumping Fally's new album non-stop and that is about it really. I like Ferre's new "Pourquoi Tu Fait" single. But What are the top 20 Rumbas and what are the top 20 sebenes that should be in my playlist right now? My Rumba and Sebene playlists are patiently waiting for your recommendations....

Congolese Music / Mabanga in Love Songs
« on: January 30, 2019, 05:19 »
Guys,

How does Mabanga in love songs work? So in the song like "Doc Jeff", is Fally singing a love song to this Doc Jeff guy? Is he taking the role of a lover of Doc Jeff? Maybe I have been corrupted by the West but there seem to be declarations of love being uttered by these male singers to these male donors. Is this all just harmless?

I have asked this before but I am just confused guys. I am expecting love songs about women in rumba but I don't know what is going on with these songs that are bought by these tycoons.

I guess I am asking for the cultural Congolese context of the way the music is today with ridiculous amount of mabangas and more and more bought love songs whose titles are the names of their donors.

Congolese Music / Direct Contact to Fally Ipupa
« on: May 04, 2018, 13:17 »
Who on here has direct contact to Fally?

He makes a big mistake when he uses the word "mtoto" to refer to women in his East African concerts to mean the same thing how the word "baby" is in English or "mwana" is in Lingala or "bebe" in French. In East African Swahili we do not use the word "mtoto" to refer to women. Someone please correct him because he uses this word "mtoto" a lot as a direct translation in his concerts when he is in East African countries and it's cringe-worthy. We use other cheeky and sweet words in East Africa to refer to women in the Swahili language and it is not "mtoto".

Congolese Music / New Rumbas for the Summer
« on: April 04, 2018, 07:31 »
My people, I need like a list of twenty or so tantalizing  rumbas that came out this year to start a playlist for the summer.

You can keep adding to this list as more and more rumbas come out going into the summer.

Add away!

Congolese Music / Let's discuss Fally
« on: July 09, 2017, 09:44 »
Guys, is Fally Ipupa the genius and star extraordinaire we all feel and think that he is or are we tripping?

After listening to this new album, I came to the conclusion that there are french based Africans (more specifically Congolese) who have done and are currently doing the sound he is calling "world album" better and more polished than him. And what is even more crazy is that the reason the likes of MHD and all those European based Africans respect and seek him out is because to them he is the African who is doing African music, who is doing the real music that they the European based African artists regurgitate and sell to the European public. He is a reference to them in terms of style music culture etc etc. They respect him for being an African artist. But Fally is turning around and putting these guys on a pedestal and seeking them out. It is as if Fally does not really understand his own power and the dignity and respect that comes with that that everyone is bestowing on him but he turns around and acts insecure. He really is the child of Koffi in a way because I see the same lack of self awareness and understanding of power and projection in the childishness and immaturity that Koffi exhibits from time to time.

"Droit Chemin" was David Monsoh's genius project. It was Fally in the guidance of Monsoh. Besides that first album, what is and who is Fally as an artist? His work while he was in Quartier Latin was at the guidance of Koffi Olomide who is, as far as I am concerned, a genius, an artist with a longevity and relevance than any other artist on this planet, his shenanigans and madness regardless . We are talking late 1970s to 2017 and Koffi is still Koffi. Who else on this planet is on this level? On this level of relevance to the young and old past and present?

So, my people, what is the verdict on Fally Ipupa? Is he the present and future of Congolese music? Is he really "that dude" as the African Americans would say. Is he our African pop star extraordinaire? Is fally a genius on his own or is he a genius who can only be directed and brought to live by others, e.g. David Monsoh and Koffi Olomide?

My people...what the hell man.

Ferre Gola is a man who has a "sound". If you cannot keep up with the journey of the man as he perfects this "sound" of his, this artistry, please don't label the man "monotonous" because you think he sounds the same. Thinking that he sounds the same just because he seems to sound the same is not the same thing. Not everyone can be a grill wearing hip hop fashion genre bending Fally Ipupa. We also need people who know who they are and what they are about. A people of "tradition". A people who perfect a trade and a skill. Ferre Gola is such a person. Such an artist. A man of a particular trade, a particular skill, a particular style, a particular sound.

On the other hand, people complain about Koffi not sounding like the "old Koffi". So, a complain about "monotony" and a complain about "not being monotonous".

My fellow Africans, are we ever satisfied or grateful?

By the way, I'm thoroughly enjoying QQJD. 8/10. Ferre still lacks in the generique and sebene department. It is Congolese music after all, you have to bring on the dance music, not just the bolingo ballads. All the greats understood this and made sure they covered both departments masterfully.

Congolese Music / Fabregas studio Cursus
« on: May 28, 2017, 09:35 »

Polemic aside, it looks like Fabregas will deliver again with this group album. The man is so so talented. It is just a pity that he wastes so much energy on ego trips.

Congolese Music / "Target" Generique
« on: March 18, 2017, 05:55 »

Tatiana Kruz is really talented. What a wonderful dancing track.

And I ask all of you once again. Where online can I buy this album? The link they put other her videos to get the album does not work and in one instance takes you to the album of Fabregas as opposed to Kruz "pilipili ya moke"

Congolese Music / Any Updates on "Nyataquance"?
« on: December 20, 2016, 04:06 »
koffi too preoccupied with his daughter running for some diaspora award. is he gonna release this track this week or not? there has been no preview clips or snippets of the actual track in studio except for the repetitions and kirikou hyping it on tv.

Congolese Music / "Osi Sa Ngo"

nice little track i found on ndombolhino today. looks like some of the cries by kirikou are taking off on their own already and being used by others even before "nyataquance" drops.

by the way, any one of you guys keeping tabs on the polemique between ferre's camp and koffi's camp over "dance ya ba boss".

which one are you guys looking forward to? "boss" or "nyataquance".

Congolese Music / Open Thread
« on: October 16, 2016, 08:43 »
I am a big fan of Rumba Congolaise and "congovibes" is the premier blog where people like me and the rest of you guys and gals get a chance to express their love and fandom for this lovely music. So I would like to start something new. Once a week or so I will post an "Open Thread" where all of us can post any thought, media, anecdote, etc of Rumba Congolaise with the hope that in doing so we can discover as well as uncover very unique and interesting things about this music we love so much. The main point of this endeavor is to generate dialogue and conversation beyond topic specific posts. So with that being said, here is to the first congovibes "Open Thread".

Post away...

Congolese Music / Innoss'B - Elengi feat. Koffi Olomide
« on: October 08, 2016, 21:03 »

what does one call this style. It is unique I must say. It is not pure West African Afro Beat which are heavy on the beats because the classic rhythm and bass guitars of Congolese rumba are still very much prominent. It has the Afrobeat appeal and short length but still rooted in Congo. is this a new genre inside Congolese rumba, a way of dealing and accommodating the recent primacy of Afro beat over Congolese rumba? because a lot of the songs are getting shorter lately and heavy on the Afro beats from the beginning. it does not build like in the classic sebene tracks. Should Congolese rumba make these changes like it almost did catastrophically with Coupe Decale? Or should Congolese rumba just stay true to its sebene roots and history and let Afro Beat be Afro Beat maybe soon it will also pass like Coupe Decale but Congolese rumba will still here.

I like the track. The kid is massively talented.
