It’s funny how the mabanga cycles goes. For every time period there’s 2-3 guys who are extremely flamboyant And you hear often. Exactly 20 years ago it was Didi Kinuani, Adam Bombole (an Arab @Manzambi), Papito Mabala, Carzodo Muamba, and Etepe Buengo among others.
A lot of them still have their money, but lost the obsession they used to have. Many other guys were wealthy for a short amount of time, then went broke. Despite that, their names are immortalized in hit songs.
Right now the guys in vogue are Doc Jeff Leteta(“il est vraiment docteur”- Goldberg vice )Lizarazu Mavambu, Roi Manitou, and this guy
Abed Achour.... who doesn't sing his name nowadays....
So he's out there, doing what Leteta is doing, trying to promote himself through as many songs as possible. Wonder if he'll last as long as any other non-Congolese donor though.
His family’s wealth is generations old in DRC. He’s not going anywhere.
Buying songs and going hard on public flexing of cash at concerts is the way to become a celeb overnight. People are so feeble to wealth
Our artist have never discriminate where their matolo money comes from
Amazing; you read my mind. Was about to post the same topic. 1999 was really my favorite year in terms of releases. In honor of the 20th anniversary, I’ve played all the albums constantly as of late.
Really hard for me to pick the best, but do think June 1999’s release of Wemba’s M’zee Fula Ngenge was a strong influence on the later releases.
I bought the Attentat CD and Solola Bien in at the record store early 2000. Make the mistake of buying “Version Radio” of Attentat. Both CD’s were in my walkman/car rotation for months.
Some time later I bought Shalai I was in complete shock how perfect the sound was. Roga Roga told Martin Sinnock on his old site that the sound was to be very different from previous work. It had a “l’an 2000” sound.
My dad introduced me to Wazekwa’s Sponsor, Benz Petrole’s works, and Lutchiana’s Chinia. My mom introduced me to Pouvoir, with “Faute Ya Visa” and “Si je savais ça” being her favorite songs.
Attentat was the first album I was able to follow from conception, to preparation, and release late in the year. We bought all the repetition VHS’ that year. It was so highly anticipated and Koffi was on a different level in terms of popularity at that point.
As you mentioned Sanction, Droit De Véto, Bana Congo, La Guerre de 100 ans, Tremblement de terre, etc came out early. People with also listening to JB’s Zenith and pre-TH EP and Koffi’s Olympia CD was in circulation early in the year.
If only I had a time machine...
Solola Bien in december 1999
Yes, about Christmas, but really started to get the album after the new year
Droit De Veto came out at the end of November in 1998! Right after Zénith and Olympia.
You have to remember it always took 2-3 months for physical CD’s to go into full circulation around the world. Not all copies were available or purchased at once
