With this lockdown ending, how can I find out about concerts coming up over the next 2 months if any? Planning to be in Europe at the end of this month and through august.  Even the smaller venues are of interest.
Thanks!

Congolese Music / Re: MPR - SEMEKI (Clip officiel)
« on: October 25, 2020, 00:48 »
Speaking as an American but big fan of Congolese music, this has to be one of the better videos/songs released by a congolese artist that Ive seen. I don't understand Lingala but a friend translated it, which still doesn't allow true appreciation for the content. But I can see that they've taken a different approach vs others while still mixing old/new school vibes. They also keep it in Lingala which is interesting given the rap style, I expected french. This video should get the 10M+ if the right people see it. It appeals to those into afrobeats as well minus the english.

I think that pattern you hear is actually more common than you might think. In the first JB song, it functions as the 2nd or mi solo guitar. The way the song was mixed it is the loudest or most prominent guitar but the lead(solo) is actually the solo from the song "Kinshasa" from the TH album. 5:10 mark
Koffi used it more as a solo.

Everyone just has variations of it

Werrason 7:20

You can hear variations of it in the 2nd guitar in Felix Wazekwa's  Fimbu 5:10

There are a few more variations I think King Kester and a few others but I can't think of them off the top of my head.

From an audio quality standpoint, there are very few albums that can compare to this one. The arrangement is pretty good as well.

I think this question can be answered a number of ways because each of the artists that have made headway into overseas markets have done it a little differently in the more recent years. I can't really comment on the pre 90s artists. Some have retained a pure congolese sound while many have commercialized their sound to achieve that success. The only one that I can think of that was able to do both is Awilo Logomba. For example, I believe that much of the success that Papa Wemba has had wasn't through a pure congolese sound. On the flip side Extra Musica and Koffi gained some success with a more authentic sound. Today I guess Fally deserves some credit though the sound he brings is a little commercialized as well.

Congolese Music / Re: Extra musica 242 is out
« on: March 10, 2018, 22:50 »
I listened to this album, honestly as a huge fan of the Extra Music sound...I am really disappointed, though it should be expected. Im speaking from the standpoint of a non-lingala speaker but as musician and a huge fan of the seben/soukous. Like others have mentioned before, the sound of Extra is the same thing over and over.  The fact that this album is mostly seben sound I think hurts it simply because the beat is the exact same song for every song. If you were to run each seben one after the next you can't really tell you're on a new song. This was an album that was purely recycled Extra Music/Wenge songs. I feel Extra Music with this album has not advanced their music one bit, they've actually regressed. Nothing innovative here

From a pure musical standpoint based on the quality of the music alone and my bias towards their sound it gets a 7/10. Nothing innovative or different vs the music of today.
From the standpoint of knowing the previous work and how this album is recycled..a solid 2/10.

This album sounds like a more polished version of previous albums 100%. The sound is not bad rather just absolutely nothing new.
1.  242: This song sounds just like Sorcille Kindoki from start to end. The distorted guitar solo at the end is used in at least 5 other songs in this album and has been heard before in songs over the past. "Jesu sur la croix" The entire arrangement is the same song
2. Ingratitude sounds like a song from Wenge's Les Anges Adorables mixed with something from Shalai album
3. MM International...see number 2 and number, solo sounds like Innodation
4. Same as number 2 with "Jesu sur la croix" solo
5. Another previous rumba
6. See number 2
7. Le philanthrope starts off like and old Wenge/Shalai/Obligatoire song then he literally goes into the same solo from Innodation @ 3:15
8. Le jour sinistre....This song is the same as Chagrin plus plus..LITERALLY!. Bass line gives it away. It transitions into a Makaba ish rift at the end.
9. Drumming actually sounds a lot like one of Papy Kakol's on a Maison Mere album...cant think of the song. It transitions into a halfway solo and goes back into the "Jesu sur la croix" solo
10. Toko Suka Wapi...I had hope. But again its just and old song repackaged. They took Chagrin plus plus and put it in a major key in the 7/7 progression. Then again "Jesu sur la croix" solo at the end.

Congolese Music / Re: IF YOU WERE A MUSICIAN...
« on: February 19, 2018, 12:35 »
I'd still use youtube granted the video is good. The payments suck but as a musician you don't really depend on this to recoup your income. It gives you the visual promotion for work later on like appearances/performances where many musicians make their money today. The other services are pretty much only audio which doesn't get attention like a video. Not to mention youtube is probably the most used service listed. Look at it as an investment.

Congolese Music / Re: Young Talent doing his thing.
« on: December 10, 2016, 22:36 »
It's always a thing of joy to see young talents exploring this great music style. Relax people! Congolese music is not going anywhere!!!! Does he need help or you think all the partitions he played up to standard? I think his rhythm style needs some work. His solo is good but needs variation.  What do you think?

If you over analyze it you could come up with a million things that can be done to improve any track. I think he did an excellent job with what he put together. The mere fact that he played and engineered everything himself, then put together the video on top of that speaks volumes on its own. Honestly I think his short excerpt sounds better than half of the stuff put out there. Lets see how many artists we can name that have done that.

Who is playing the lead guitar in the 2nd video?

How many from that list have been confirmed or suspected of dying from AIDS related maladies? Also, while you would think that many die relatively young (45-50s), life expectancy in most African countries is about 50yrs. Coming from France, UK, USA that seems very low being that the western world is 70-80.

Congolese Music / Is the Gospel Sebene Better Than Secular?
« on: March 16, 2016, 16:00 »
Ive been listening to a lot of Congolese music over the past few years and one thing that Ive noticed with the more modern style of play is the Gospel groups especially those in Europe tend to produce better quality music and are far more innovative with their compositions vs the secular groups. Sometimes you may hear the gospel groups copy the likes of Fally and such but most of the times they do a pretty good job and I'd argue even better. I am not talking about the lyrics simply because I do not understand Lingala only the musicians and their arrangement/quality. What do you all think?

These are just a few that I am talking about.

Congolese Music / Re: NICE TITANIC GUITAR COVER

Cool, do you have a home studio or are you working off your computer...

No not a real studio. I own a guitar, a bass, midi keyboard, a macbook and an interface (connects the guitars to the computer). I use Logic to record and a drumming software.

Yes indeed...its not 100% accurate but close enough lol. Im not congolese, my background is Haitian-American so that influences my playing a lot. I realized on some of the solos I left out a part or two like liberation but oh well. Masuwa wasn't on the album but it fit. I don't bother to try to get the baselines and 2nd/3rd guitars accurate, rather just improvise to sound how I thought it did.

Haha, you guys that was actually me that put that together :D  The guitars and bass were done with real instruments but the drumming is through a keyboard. I posted it to my soundcloud page as well https://soundcloud.com/gary-desinord/jb-mpiana-cover-titanic
Follow me there as I hope to continue to do more as my skill level gets better in the future. My I hope to do one similar to this using some of my other favorites like Zaiko, Empire Bakula and maybe a better Extra Musica track.

How To Play It / Are there any other musicians on the board?
« on: January 25, 2016, 21:02 »
Pretty much as the title states, if you are a musician playing Congolese/West African music what do you do and where are you located?
