Congolese Music / Some old Tune from the Archives
« on: May 30, 2020, 21:03 »

This odd group was hilarious!

The same song was done by the comedian Mbuta Likasu:

Comedians occasionally came up with some gems.

Just goes to show the talent Africa has that needs to be tapped and channeled.

« on: April 17, 2020, 19:51 »

Hunkering down in my crib to keep social distance gives me time to go through some of my old collection of music.

Just came across this Zaiko Gem and could not help playing it three times today.

Ahh!! the 1990's When Nkolo Mboka ruled the Roost.

Congolese Music / Is this the sweetest voice in Africa ?
« on: July 30, 2019, 13:06 »
Bandeko,

Just wondering if there has been a female vocalist who can top this ?

Not heard a female vocalist in Africa who has such talent and voice...

I take it this is a Baluba folk song from the Mutuashi beats?

Jojo Ikomo ( sometimes written as Djo djo Ikomo) was born in Mbandaka on the 12th March, 1952 in the Republic of Zaire.

In 1970 he composed his first song "Sema Sema" accompanied by the Orchestre Tabou National and In 1973 he joined Orchestre VeVe of Kiamuangana Mateta with whom he enjoyed a lot of success, particularly with songs like "Maina" and "Kaniuka (Kanyuka)".

In 1975 Jojo Ikomo left VeVe to join Orchestre  Bana Moja. Along Jojo in the group were Thomas & Felly Ndjoku, the sons of N'Djoku Ey'Obaba, former governor of Kinshasa, and jojo's brother Alexis Ikomo. Bana means offspring and they were literally from the same family. Thomas Ndjoku was also owner of the Bana Modja label and produced many bands such as Yoka Lokole, the breakout band from which Papa Wemba and many members of Zaiko and Viva La Musica emerged.
They were called "Belgicains," because they studied abroad, when they returned they were shunned by their parents for taking to music so moved to N'Djili, Zaire on their return.

Because of family pressure they did not tour and perform but rather concentrated on recording and issuing 45s.
Felly went on to be the arranger for Lita Bembo. Thomas became a Christian minister and a gospel artist.

Jojo took the new Bana Moja to Uganda on tour, but they quickly disbanded later the same year and he took several members with him to Kenya where they regrouped as Bana Ngenge but only lasted a year before splitting again.

Members of Bana Ngenge were :
Jojo Ikomo (Band Leader and Vocals ), Moreno Batamba ( Vocals), Fataki "Los Los" Lokassa (Vocals/guitar), Alexis Ikomo, Roxy Tshimpaka (guitar solo), Nsilu Wabansilu "Manitcho"  (bass), Lawison Somana(sax), "Ochudis" Mandala Otis Muissa (Vocals),  Nzengele Saida (guitar), Beya Maduma a.k.a. Moro Maurice ( sax).

The song "Bana ya Ngenge" tells the story of their formation.

Jojo also re-recorded his Veve hit with Bana Ngenge, this time renaming it Kayuma :

Among  Bana Ngenge's other hits are :

Belinda

Malanda :

Etisomba:

Jojo also recorded with another group known as Bana Lisanga. This may have been just another name for his group as most of the band were the same as Bana ngenge.

Later the group broke up and his band members left to join other groups in Nairobi, and Joj continued recording songs using his Bana Moja (Modja) label and session musicians, under the name "Jojo Ikomo and his orchestre".

Kingo Mwambe :

Moseka :

The Bana Moja the label, was created to release Bana Ngenge records and continued in use long after the Bana Ngenge band. Examples are when Moreno Batamba one of Bana Ngenge's vocalists recorded his songs, he used the label and called his band Moja one (although they were mostly session musicians).

Maya Tu :

After the group broke up Bana Ngenge musicians joined other groups :
Nsilu wa Bansilu (Manichu) and Fataki Lokassa Joined samba Mapangala's Les Kinois, Moreno Batamba Joined Les Noirs while others joined Orchestre Shika Shika or  became session musicians in Nairobi.
Jojo Ikomo stayed in Nairobi untl the 1980's when he left to go to Kinshasa and later joined Empire Bakuba.

Here is his song while in Empire Bakuba :

Pepe Kalle & Empire Bakuba - Simplicite (Djodjo Ikomo) 1993

Not much is heard of Jojo Ikomo nowadays, but he is one of the musicians who spiced up Nairobi and Kenya Music Life.

Ramazani "Remmy" Mtoro Ongala (1947 10 Feb – 13 December 2010) was a Tanzanian guitarist and singer.
Ongala was born in Kindu near the Tanzanian border, in what was the Belgian Congo at the time, and now is the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Remmy Ongala travelled to Dar es Salaam where he joined Orchestra Makassy in 1978, and later broke off to form
his own band Orchestre Super Matimila (named after the businessman who owned the band's instruments).

Ongala's tune are reminiscent of T.P.O.K Jazz but he sang predominatly in Swahili in a style he called 'Ubongo', the
Swahili word for brain.  He mostly sang about social topics like the HIV/AIDS epidemic, Corruption,  urbanisation and
unity and fidelity between a man and his wife. This led his fans to nick-name him Sauti ya Mynoge (voice of the poor man).

Some of his major Hits are Mariam Wangu :

Sauti Ya Mnyonge ( The Poor Man's Voice) :

Siku Ya Kufa ( The day of one's Death ) :

Karola :

Asili Ya Muziki ( The Origin of Music) :

Remmy Ongala exported his music abroad and for a period was based in Sweden, and he toured prominently in Europe.
Even as he toured, his message was still on topical issues, translating his songs to English for the European audience :

He is regarded as one of Tanzania's greatest composers/singers.

Grand Piza was a great Hit in the 70's

Mandalala was such a great hit in Nairobi that all discos were not discos if the DJ did not have this...

Other notable Hits were Mwana Mawa

10

There are some classics from Zairean Musicians that get the old bones creaking when they are played today.
The hits below managed to create Christmass cheer in Nairobi and East Africa in the 70's.

The First one in the list is by the Father of Zairean Music in East Africa.

Baba Gaston ( Ilunga Wa Ilunga) is arguably the most influential man who brought Zairean musicians to East Africa through his group Orchestre Baba National. Through him groups like Mangelepa, Bwambe Bwambe and others came to the Centre of Music in East Africa looking to make their mark.

This hit was done in the Mid 70's, I think 1975 (Apologies for the poor sound due to age )

Kakolele Viva Christmas:

Here is an incomplete but better copy :

The vocalist in this song I think is Kasongo Wa Kanema who came to East Africa through Baba National. Kasongo and the whole crew left Baba National to form Orchestre Bwambe Bwambe and after that group disintegrated he went on to join Super Mazembe.

I will try and get to do a feature of Ilunga Wa Ilunga later.

The second hit is by Samba Mapangala's Les Kinios called Furaha ya Christmas done in 1977 :

Orchestre Jobiso was not strictly a Zairean Band. It was an off-shoot of  Tanzania's Simba Wa Nyika. One of the three founders of simba Wa Nyika formed Jobiso after the fallout.

Enjoy !!

Old School Music / Another one from the Archives - Stage Marshall
« on: November 20, 2017, 17:49 »

This is a recording from the Old Voice of Kenya ( Now Kenya Broadcasting Corporation)

Orchestre Les Mangelepa were ruling the airwaves :

Bwamy Wa Lumona is the bearded guitarist wizard.

Bandibanga Wa Tshilumba (KaiKai)  is the lead singer on most of the Songs

Notice the Dance and the footwork - Michael Jackson had not even gone solo and they were showing his moves...

Apologies for the poor sound quality, I think the recording was not from the original studio works. Hope you can tell the quality of the horns in those days.

Congolese Music / Baby and Dede
« on: October 21, 2017, 17:52 »

I have always wondered about these two songs, one by Josky Kiambukuta and TP OK called Baby
And the second by Zaiko Langa Langa called Dede.

The chorus in both sound very similar, but the name baby is replaced by Dede.

Any old connouisers in the house have the details to share the background?

Josky and TP OK :

And Nyoka Longo and Zaiko Langa Langa (Version 1) :

Remix done in Avis De Recherche :

Old School Music / Nairobi Band in the 70's - Viva Makale
« on: May 24, 2017, 10:46 »
Viva Makale was formed In 1979 when the Manager of the hottest joint in Nairobi Called Garden Square ( known as Kasuku Armstrong) wanted to fill a void left by the breakup of one of his resident bands known as Orchestre Bwambe Bwambe.

The Manager then asked Bwami Wa Lumona, who was the band leader of his Main resident Band, Les Mangelepa, to get together with another musician known as George Kalombo Mwanza and form a band to fill the gap.

Kalombo Mwanza was a member of a group known as Kombe Kombe and he recruited a number of the group members to form Viva Makale. Viva Makale was then contractd by Kasuku Armstrong to play alongside Les Mangelepa at Garden Square as resident bands.

The founding members of Viva Makale were : George Kalombo Mwanza (Vocals/Sax), Bwami Wa Lumona ( Lead), Leyla (Trumpet), Tshiamusoke ( Trumpet), Coco Zigo"Mike" (Vocals), Tambwe Mandola ( Vocals), and Jimmy Monimambo (Vocals),  Chery Matumona (Lead guitar),  Siama Matuzungidi (rhythm), Kabeya ( Rythm), Thomy Lomboto (Bass) and Lava 'Machine" ( Drums).

Their Introductory song was known as Safari :

This song was done in Lingala and Swahili and details how the group was formed.

Arguably their Biggest hit was Akamba :

and Bibi Mdogo ( Second Wife or co-wife) :

Later additions to the group was Moreno Batamba ( Vocals) who can be heard on background vocals and chorus in
another hit known as Shanti :

The Group had a style of theirs known as Mokon nyon nyon, which featured in their chorus and chants. Sample another of their hits known as Mama Nala :

And souza :

Old School Music / Super Mazembe - Zairean Export to Kenya
« on: March 03, 2017, 14:11 »

Super Mazembe was founded in 1967 as Super Vox in Likasi town. It later shifted to Lubumbashi town, for better growth and where the music industry was centered.

In Lubumbashi, they found that there were a number of other groups known as super Vox, so they changed their name to Super Mazembe - meaning ‘Earth Movers or Bulldozers’ in Lingala. I am not sure whether it was in reverence to the soccer team known as TP Mazembe.

Super Mazembe was comprised of the band leader Didos Mutonkole Longwa, Bukalos Bukassa (lead guitarist), Rapok Kayembe (rythmist), Atia Jo (bass guitarist), Katele Aley (lead composer and vocalist), Dodo Doris (drums), Kassongo Songoley (rythmist) and Charles Kagamba (vocalist).

Later on Super Mazembe crossed to Ndola town in Zambia where the group named their dancing Style Mushosho ( short for M-shock show ) .  While in Ndola,  the band met Nashil Pitchen, a music producer and the proprietor of the Nairobi’s Eagles Band. Pitchen was impressed with the group and he arranged to bring Super Mazembe to Kenya in 1972.

In Kenya, Mazembe joined the line-up of other bands from Zaire like Orchestra Mangelepa, Les Kinois, Viva Makale, Le Noirs, Boma Liwanza, Bwambe Bwambe among others.

Super Mazembe's had roughly three phases of their music domination in Nairobi. The first was the formative phase after their arrival in Kenya. Among their first hits in 1975 was Bwana Nipe Pesa - A song about a man being asked to provide money for his family upkeep because his wife is not taking good care of his children and she is wandering all over until neighbours do not want to see her:

Super Mazembe got Nairobi's attention with a hit known as Southview in 1977:

Later on the Group had a very successful album featuring Samba Mapangala of Les Kinois as guest vocalist. This album had three major singles that hit the top of the charts :

Shida - Problems in Kiswahili ( 1978 ) :

Mwana Mazembe  : (1978 ) :

Samba : ( 1978 ) :

Another notable hit was Na bimaka by Katele Alley :

The Second Phase was when they band recuited additional musicians from a large pool of Zaireans artists in Nairobi. Among the musicians in Kenya who joined Mazembe are Kassongo Wa Kanema,
Fataki Lokassa, Rondo Kandolo, Charles Atei, Lobe Namapako, and Loboko Pasi.

Here is a hit of the Phase Called Kasongo - after Kasongo Wa Kanema, the recent entrant:

The third Phase was their most successful after they recruited Lovy Longoma the son of Vicky Longoma, of the TP OK Jazz fame and brother of Awilo Longoma.

Super Mazembe has a string of hits during this period :

Naleli Libota :

Ouma :

Loboko :

Mazembe’s decline began in 1986 when a businessman confiscated the band’s instruments. The businessman had purchased the equipment for Mazembe and afterward sought to own the rights to the band’s music. Following a protracted period, Lovy Longoma Left to form a groups Orcehstra Super Lovy, some members formed another group known as Mazembe stars, while others remained with the original Super Mazembe.

In the year 1998, Old veterans of the original Super Mazembe regrouped led by Longwa Dido and Atia Jo and started performing as resident band in Nairobi joints. Later on Kasongo Wa Kanema rejoined the group, and following Longwa's death in 2000 he bacame the band leader of the new Super Mazembe. Longwa's son Disco (Longwa Ngoie Kabanzi) and Kasongo's sons form the backbone of the group. Here tehy are reprising some of their hits :

Kayembe :

Super Mazembe was one of the greatest bands of East Africa, and their music has been exported abroad, remixed and sold by Virgin Megastore and other sotres in the UK. Notably, they recorded an album Known as Kaivaska where they tried to fuse into a modern version, as well as release remixes of their best old hits.

Old School Music / Samba Mapangala - Zairean Export to East Africa
« on: February 06, 2017, 12:46 »

One of the long-standing Zairean exports to East Africa is Samba Mapangala.

He was the bandleader as well as lead vocalist in a group known as Les Kinois that came to East Africa from the Kivu region of the DRC ( Then Known as Zaire). They made their way to Kenya through Uganda, where they picked the name of their style ( Kabalagala) and eventually landed in Nairobi.

Their first  hit song on arrival was Malako :

Followed by Baboka :

Another notable hit was Safari :

and Sunday :

Things became tough for recording artists during the eighties due to the decline of vinyl in favour of the Radio Cassete and piracy. Disco music also became more poular than live shows and so the the group fell on hard times.

In response, Samba  formed another group while in Kenya known as Orchestre Virunga. This was made of some of the original members of the Les Kinois and other local Kenyan musicians.  They focussed more on touring the international scene, playing in East Africa,  Japan, and finally found their way to the USA.

Eventually Samba moved permanently to the States, where he is currently based.

Sample this hit called Ahmed Sabit from one of his last albums before his departure :

This was done in Kiswahili although it has seome Lingala in it.

This group clearly had some mean guitarists.
Of note was one Silu wa Bansilu Manichu and another called Bapius...
