Congolese Music / Congovibes Lets Work Together
« on: July 06, 2019, 19:44 »
I got an idea. I would need the help of every ndeko on this website if possible. Im thinking of opening a youtube channel. Every year a legend from our music passes away and theres an african saying that goes “everytime an elder dies is the same as a library burning down”. Im thinking of opening up a youtube page to interview the legends that are still with us or the people that were close to the ones that passed to get an understanding on the great work they gave us or left us in cases where they’ve already passed. It would be an interviews in french with english subtitles because most interviews that are out are all in lingala. Everybody in Africa listens to our music and because of not being lingalaphones are never able to get the behind the scene stories.

I dont speak lingala and would do anything personnaly to be able to watch a King Kester interview where he tells his amazing story. Or even Le Poete Simaro, Tabu Ley and the likes.

I need my ndekos to help me come up with a list of the people that had an impact on our music and are still with us and are ideally either in france england or canada. Reason being logistics, it would be tough to get an interview from someone thats in KIN.

This channel would be stricly for information purposes and for music lovers. Not lookig for polemic topics, not looking for the million views. Just looking to get a better understanding of the music. If 10 people in 10 different countries watch it and like it that would be enough for me.

Special mention for noncongolese ndekos on the website; who are some people you guys would like to hear from. The purpose of the channel is to broaden the borders of our music which is already pretty global but broadening it to another extent.

Anybody that comes to mind, you guys just let me know. And im a team player anybody wanting to be a part of this team theres a seat at the table for everyone it can be a group effort.

Congolese Music / Song Credits
« on: April 24, 2019, 22:06 »
Question about the background and creation of songs. Currently listening to Voyage Mboso by Wenge 4x4 which is credited to Adolphe Dominguez. When someone is credited a song what does that mean specifically. In this case would it mean that Adolphe Dominguez came out with everyones verses as well as the chorus and guided the instrumentalists to a specific melody he had in his head? Do they come up with the instrumentalisation of a song first and then come up with lyrics?

In this same case Im also assuming the atalaku comes up with his own content, does the instrumentalisation come out first and then the atalaku finds something to fit it. Or how do the guitarist and the atalaku make it work.

Also Voyage Mboso is the song that embodies Wenge the most at the peak of their art in my humble opinion do we all agree on tha?  ;D Flawless rumba part followed by an angry sebene. Best Werra vocals EVER and Roberto in rare form. Any song could be better???

Congolese Music / Underrated / Forgotten Legends
« on: March 19, 2019, 20:17 »
Im currently listen to grand pere bozi right now checking out whats abailable on apple music. First time ever listening to him and his albums and im quite impressed. I feel like he’s one of our unsung heroes. We always hear of madilu, defao, debaba and the likes but I feel like bozi doesnt get his credit. Correct me if im wrong but was bozi one of the most popular acts late 80s early 90s and then started dying down?

Anyways who do you feel are some of our unsung heroes that you feel dont get praised enough not just on the forum but in everyday life when we’re listening to old music with our parents families and such

Congolese Music / Stino L’As De La Chorale
« on: March 16, 2019, 19:34 »
What if and bear wih me, what if Stino would have never been infatuated with Micheal Jackson? Do you think Stino could have been bigger? I personally feel like him trying to replicate MJ all the time played against him in the long run. Him trying to dance and yelling out MJ chants always takes away from any song he’s on for me. What do you guys think? Were you guys into his MJ impersination at the time at all? Is there some people that didnt mind it or liked it? And why is it that Papa Wemba never stepped him and told him to be himself?

Congolese Music / Best Atalaku performance
« on: March 01, 2019, 00:15 »
Rercording a song is one thing but performing it is a whole other. Atalakus can be really impressive on CDs and in video clips but what is to you the best atalaku PERFORMANCE on the internet.

For me it would have to be Robert Ekokota in Ave Maria at their perfomance in belgium I believe in the early part of the 90s. At minute 3:40 Ekokota starts his animation and that part  always gave me the chills and probably always will be. I remember to this day my first time stumbling upon that video and being like woah.
I actually heard that live version first before listening to the CD version and ended up being pretty dissapointed because the energy wasnt the same.

Whats one that you’ll remember forever and can think of right off the bat?

Congolese Music / Wenge Musica 4x4 BCBG
« on: November 28, 2018, 16:43 »
Ndekos I have something thats been on my mind for a while. Without any objectivity and with just looking at the songs for what they were do you think Wenge Musica 4x4 was overrated in hindsight? Only reason I ask is because from 1990 until 1996 they did a lot of work but to this day those songs dont get played much at parties or get togethers. During that period Pepe Kalle, Papa Wemba, Koffi Olomide, Defao were much less popular but to this day I still hear people play their songs from that era, be it in the car or at a party during the slow jams or even dancing to the sebenes.

I think personally Wenge revolutioned the sebene department but as far as the songs themselves I cant think of any song during 1990-96 that I can play at any wedding, am I bugging ndekos? Or do you guys agree in hindsight.

Congolese Music / Folkflorique and Traditional vibes
« on: November 07, 2018, 03:47 »
I propose we make a topic of the best traditional music that there is out there or that there has ever been. Sometimes I like listening to the new stuff but i think its also good at times to go back to the roots. I ask that whoever posts songs give us a little insight on the group like the area where they from and such because at times they sing in traditonal languages that are not lingala or tshiluba or kikongo.

I stumbled upon a gold mine this week from the tetela/mongo people and oh my god. Easily the beat song i’ve heard in 2018.

Another gold mine and favorite of mine is a Kongo song from Angola

Lets dig for gold

Congolese Music / Zaiko
« on: November 07, 2018, 03:38 »
Whats the reason that Nyoka Longa is the one that remained out of anyone else. He doesnt strike me as the most talented at the time when there was evoloko and papa wemba. What made it that he stood the test of time and became the face of Zaiko? Was he already somewhat the face of Zaiko back then? Is he musically inclided and knows how to play a few instruments? What is it about the guy.

He kind of remind me of Werrason. Not the most gifted as far as his voice but somehow ends up the face of a group, and then a whole movement.

Congolese Music / Sur les Chemins de la Rumba
« on: October 28, 2018, 06:13 »
Interesting documentary I seen on our beloved music. Its about an hr long and filled with good information about the beginnings of everything from the Cuban slaves all the way to the Ngoma editions and the likes. It goes into details on African Jazz, Bantous de la Capitale, Papa Wemba and others with Ray Lema and Pepe Felly also speaking during portions of the movie. The move unfortunately is all in french but I figured I’d put it up for the ones that speak it a little. Wish it was also in English so our anglophone brothers could follow

Congolese Music / Translators
« on: October 19, 2018, 01:59 »
Just wanted to say a big thanka to the folks that take time out their day to translate interviews and songs for us non lingala speakers. Really means a lot to us. Im myself a french/english speaker but Im speaking of behalf of our east africans as well as west africans, you guys have no idea how much this helps us understand the people behind these songs that we love. Every interview you check out on youtube there’s alwaya that one person that’s like Can I get translation, I think from now on I’m gonna tell em to look on Congovibes because it might already have heen transcripted.

Thank you once again Ndekos you guys rock
