Congolese Music / KARMAPA Le temps de l'amour
« on: June 07, 2020, 02:14 »
I remember when I first heard Karmapa's first and second album playing in my dad's car. We was on a 2 hour journey to my sister's uni.

I remember first hearing him and thinking why does he sound/imitate koffi. But i was in love with the songs and text.

I was like 19-21. I'm 27 now and I'm just recapping on Le Temps de L'amour.

Man those rumbas, this album is better than his first and it's a strong album. I'm currently analysing the album because I think it could be better than V12.

And V12 is a very strong album, I gave it 53.5/55 (97%)

So I'm currently listening to Karmapa to see what my verdict will be, but I think it might get a better score mark than V12.

Congolese Music / Quartier Latin biography

Is there a QL biography on here? I've been searching the search columns and can't find a forum dedicating to how QL started.

Thanks.

Congolese Music / CD copies
« on: June 03, 2020, 16:28 »
Something I realised when I was young and now I'm remembering it again because I saw like 2 comments about it in this forum and from YouTube comments.

People having their CD stolen by friends or friends borrowing their CD and never returning it back. Loool

Like my dad has so many classic Cds gone from his collection. He used to have this CD  stand and you can see so many cds there and I used to have bare uncles coming over.

Only a few are gone. I remember they used to write their names on the CD with a permanent marker. Loool I saw attentat cd in my dad's collection but it had my uncle's name written on the CD and on Koffi's vest of the booklet loooiol

Congolese Music / Kin E Bouge 4×4
« on: June 02, 2020, 00:42 »
Was listening to this song. Haven't listened to it for a like 2 years.

Just listening to the message at the beginning, was the lyrics aimed at any groups or artists in particular?

Love this album. Going to continue catching up.

Congolese Music / Ndombolo
« on: May 27, 2020, 19:44 »
I'm told Bouro created the dance and it was introduced in 1997 Loi. But JB also had the ndombolo cri and dance in his debut album.

Is that because of the mpela brothers creating the dance together or bouro took hIs to QL and alain mpela took the dance to JB and BCBG since they're brothers and those times it's not a problem to dance to other orchestras dance moves.

Congolese Music / Madilu solo albums
« on: May 25, 2020, 14:13 »
How would you rank his solo albums and why?

Pouvoir is my favourite album of his. Favourite track Double Zero but since yesterday I've been taking time to listen to his other albums. I haven't really been too much into his music career. So I'm making time to study his solo career.

Congolese Music / Papa Wemba - singing voice
« on: May 22, 2020, 18:18 »
I just heard the Zina Zonga song Papa Wemba sang in zaiko. Saw it from one of the forums in here.

I was waiting to hear Papa Wemba sing then I realised it was him but he sounded different. Voice wasn't high pitched, still a lovely voice.

How did it come about for his singing voice to change, what made him change?

Congolese Music / Mbilia Bel
« on: May 22, 2020, 17:43 »
Hello, can someone explain to me how Mbilia Bel got into the music industry and her impact during the 80s.

I assume she was the hottest female star of the 80s right?

« on: May 21, 2020, 13:00 »
If someone wanted to know more about out music, which top 20 sebene would you recommend they listen to?

I'm not asking for it to be in order, just asking for at least 20 sebene songs.

Congolese Music / Songwriting
« on: May 20, 2020, 18:41 »
As we all know back in the days artists had ghostwriters, or co-writers working with them on songs. It wasn't an issue until it became an issue because of the public.

Does anyone know of the first incident involving a Ghost writer coming out to say I wrote "this song for Werra" or for Fally whoever?

How did this problem begin because I heard ghostwriters got paid but someone decided na we need to get paid everytime the song sells or appears on the radio etc  they wanted residual. Does anyone know when this problem began?

Congolese Music / Loi/Ultimatum
« on: May 17, 2020, 23:22 »
I know they both came out in 1997 but which album came out first?

Tried searching for answers in forums couldn't find.

And is that the first time that an artist and their group both release albums In the same year? That's incredible.

Knowing that around those times, Koffi had Wake Up come out the previous year and I guess during 1997 they started work for droit de veto.

Just looking back at Koffi's album releases, he had one hell of a busy schedule.

Congolese Music / Consistency
« on: May 16, 2020, 00:34 »
I read from one forum on here about the influence of QL on Congolese music.

Would you say that Koffi and his group have been the most consistent when it comes to releasing albums?

I mean since the 90s, he's released almost every year. Other artists have too but do you think Koffi has been the most consistent?

And if yes then I believe he's only been this consistent because he always had to fight to prove a point. The competition he's faced made the level of productivity high.

So in the end his work maybe wouldn't be as great as it is f it wasn't for the likes of the challenges he feared from Papa Wemba, Wenge (especially)

Do you agree?

Congolese Music / Foridoles / Pole Position = Papa Wemba.
« on: May 14, 2020, 23:51 »
If there are any albums I will forever cherish then it's these 2 albums.

Because number 1, I'm 27 and I was born in England. And I spoke more English and little to no lingala, but understood it. When the songs I knew from those times was through hearing my dad playing them like these albums. But i was too young to know the song names and what It's about etc.

But when I reached 14,15 I was into my hip hop but I always had a connection. With wanting to know more about my history. The motherland and me and dad always bonded through him giving me Congo history lessons which included music. But I decided from teenager to start listening to the songs myself. I will sit there and listen and not understand too much but still enjoy the music. And I loved the sound from these two albums. Especially Moyi. And I loved foridoles more than pole position. I saw those two albums as yaya na leki.

The older I got the more I was learning lingala and watching interviews and basically got heavily involved with the music to the point where I can tell dad "that song is called captaine du Benelux, it's JB's song with  Wenge BCBG" and he would be surprised because he doesn't remember the song at all. I've played so many songs by myself without anyone showing me the songs and that's why people usually come to me to ask me for the song name instead of asking siri.

The older I got, the better I understood lingala and the meanings and the disses to other artists.

But I always cherished these 2 albums because I would play them nearly everyday on my computer or my Sony Ericsson walkman.

What I want to know is if there's any "did you know" fun facts about those 2 albums. Anything interesting that can be shared about those albums.

I know already about Felix, Papa Wemba losing popularity then coming back strong with foridoles.

I already saw from the other forums in here about the foridoles song being a warning to Koffi. Was there any other warnings for other artists on foridoles and pole position? Love dixieme commandement so much but loved it harder when I heard Dally Kimoko was on it. I didn't know who he was when I was young but I only found out about him like 3 years ago, and was always looking for his work he's done so I can hear his magic and that's what led me to start listening and studying other guitarists. Ba 8kilos, Roxy, Dally, other names have escaped me but yeah. I'm proud of myself.

What other things can you tell me about those albums? I love those 2 albums so much, 3rd would be V12. I always played that. Was amazed at the sound and texte. I used to be upset with nouveau testament being a rumba/seben song. I loved how it started and wanted it to finish that way but when I heard the next drop, I knew sebene was coming at the end

But yeah if there's anything you can tell me in addition to what k already know then I'm grateful.

Congolese Music / CD booklets
« on: May 13, 2020, 20:09 »
I have the V12 booklet, original CD. I've always kept it. Took it from my dad like 5 years ago lol

He has so many cds. I could even go back and check which CD booklets he has.

But if v12 isn't on here then I will upload it and is there a forum with lists of booklets not uploaded yet that people want? Because if I see any you want at my parents I will just upload them here.

Congolese Music / Koffi and Fally, the ups and down.
« on: May 09, 2020, 17:22 »
I'm not sure if we've already touched on their brief downfall. But if it was discussed could you refer me to the forum.

My question is when Fally made droit chemin, what happened after that. Because I know Koffi said he didn't approve.. From droit chemin to now, was there any songs from both sides attacking each other? And what other problems happened during their beef.

Thank you.
