This is a historical video recorded in prefect circumstances. Clear picture, great performance, but channels are missing from the sound, incl. the lead guitar. Very big mistake. I can't believe it. I wonder if the original recording is so poor as well, or the user who posted the video recorded only one channel from the vhs player. It seems as if only one side would be present from the stereo. I wonder if a complete recording is available somewhere with both channels audible.

Congolese Music / Re: FIKIN 2015 HAS STARTED
« on: June 24, 2015, 04:23 »
I know for ages this festival is going on, but what is it actually about? It is organized on what basis? To show the Congolese musical palette at one place, or what is the idea behind it?

I think even today there is diversity, the only difference is that they fill up spaces between rumbas and sebens with salsa, coupe decale, rap and other South and North American stuff. They should put there these folkloric pieces instead, and the whole record would look different.

LOL, I couldn't recognise Mumbafu now at all after watching the old clips, he looks so different. Not like Lofombo, that guy seems as if his face would never change.

Hello!  :)

Usually when I receive such questions, I am not able to come up with one choice only. But a guy named Coco Kianda impressed me so much recently, that I dare to place him above the others. I would hire him to be my musician if I would be a multimillonnaire.

Congolese Music / Old Extra Musica live clips from Benin
« on: June 09, 2015, 22:34 »
Live recordings of Extra Musica are quite rare on Youtube, especially from the 90's. Here are two from Benin. The show was held in 1999. Songs are: Etat Major and Losambo. Unfortunately the recording is not mixed well, some instruments are inaudible.

Congolese Music / Re: WHAT HAPPENED TO DJ SLY

Well he always asks the video who are been post have a translation or summerize but this is not always the case..

That is not good if some of the members are still posting non-english videos without full or partial translation, it discredits the forum. I will make a notice of it in the board. If you find such a video, just press the Report to moderator button at the bottom of the post, so I can know about it.

Maybe we will introduce a French section where those videos can be posted.

He is in Zambia. Coming back soon.

What needs to be moderated? I didn't notice anything rude recently. Any problems?

Congolese Music / Jeannot Bel - Cherie Na Nga - NEW ALBUM!
« on: May 03, 2015, 20:44 »
Jeannot Bel, the guitarist of Kanda Bongo Man has released his new album under his own name. It is available on iTunes:

I have only listened to the previews yet, but it is already interesting for me. Finally we have an album that contains only Congolese-style songs! Something that is very rare nowdays!

Papy Bastin told me he is working on his new album, and it is out in June.

In my opinion, monotonity doesn't hurt, provided it is coupled with uplifting ambiance. This latter one is what disappeared from their solos. I thought this is because they wanted to modernize the sound, but that generique that I linked proves even with the modern sound, those earlier type of solos can make a good combination. If they would pay attention to it, they could create a top hit album. There are moments in this album that shows they would be capable of that, it is just a matter of good cordination to achieve it. Somebody should supervise them in the studio to define such a direction. Then, an album made this way could be the record of the decade.

Nevertheless, I am glad you can still find gems on their albums.

His generiques are quite monotonous however this sounds a bit like the old Extra Musica generiques, not bad at all.

Yes, the beginning of the song commemorates very much to the sound of older Extra Musica albums, it is a pity they didn't add more parts like that.

On the other hand, they are still the number 1 band for me regarding choruses and rumba accompaniment. There is that song on the album titled: Zero, it is simply fantastic. One of their best rumba pieces accoarding to my opinion:
