Congolese Music / MUSIC AS A PROFESSION AND LIFE OF A MUSICIAN
« on: October 17, 2016, 14:56 »
After keenly listening to two musicians one being a good friend, I have a feeling that music is one profession with serious hidden dark power that may be natural. My friend who had two successful Benga albums has always told me that music is one stupid profession with stupid players in it that its very hard for a simple and sober man to survive in. For instance my friend tried putting up a band but was pissed off and left making music all together.

For instance he said that the most talented and senior most member of the band, in this case his lead guitarist would fail to show up for one important show and did not even bother to give apologies. At some point one musician would decide to leave with a girl friend at the middle of a concert and would not show remorse the following day. He said at some point he had to go for his musicians physically to carry them to the concert hall, then again it is even hard for the leader to know where they live. They keep changing.

He said that the life of a good musician was not easy to understand, They would act in a weird manner, abuse drugs and would most of the time would lack proper reasoning.

He said that you can not TRUST a musician. A musician he said has many faces. He said its a hard balance to have musicians happy in your band because if they are paid well they don't come to work the following day, if they are paid less they embarrass you with your donors on stage, they beg and spoil your name, They disappear with older women.

He said the intense rivalry that is always there in the band among members may break you up as a leader.

He says musicians world wide most of the time receive money that is not clean. He says most of the time what musicians are paid is not what promoters are able to fetch from gate collections if there are no corporate sponsors. He gave the case of koffi's last visit to Kenya where he was paid $100,000 and surely way above what could be collected from ticketing. He said guys with dirty dealings use musicians for money laundering. Just last week I could see that to be true with Chris Brown concert in Mombasa where he was reported to have been paid nearly 1 million dollar but tickets were only selling at 200 dollars.

Those who have been close to musicians kindly share about their personal life.

Congolese Music / RHUMBA IS BACK!!!
« on: March 25, 2016, 18:51 »
Rhumba influence is back in town. This is a public service vehicle in Nairobi.finally the American influence on these vehicles will fade. There is another one with Fally's images. Today if you don't play rhumba you don't get business!! I mean nearly all pubs are now playing rhumba.

Congolese Music / KOFFI IN KENYA

Grand mopao, arguably the most famouse Congolese abroad. I took a gamble by not buying the ticket in advance only for the concert to be sold out 4 days before. I ended up bribing double the initial cost to watch the show for only one hour. It was a thriller and Bouro is well at the centre of QL. It is said that he will do another concert this coming weekend.

I met Tata yesterday before his show at club Meladen in Nairobi, as always he was jovial and told me he has many big things to come. He only came with three band members and was joined by some ex Tonya Tonya members playing with Generation Wenge.

If Mose Fan Fan was Kenyan this old man would be Dollar millionaire today just because of this song. He would be paid millions in royalties owing to number of times this song is played on air in many radio stations.
Actually this song has been abused by radio stations in Kenya.

Congolese Music / FANTASTIC GEN. DEFAO:
« on: June 01, 2015, 13:18 »
General Defao gave a thrilling show at Egesa East villa in Nairobi yesterday night. Ooooooh!!! what an Excellent singer!!!! I could not imagine Defao pay tribute to Madilu through Nzele and later on sing Testament ya Bowule and other Simaro compositions. Reliable sources told me that Defao want to use Local Band Rhumba Japan to attempt a comeback.

I thought of it that Defao can take advantage of concert ban in Europe for his brothers from Congo and try a Zenith since he is not in any way in contact with Congo now. Guys do you think combatants can stop Defao from performing at Zenith?

For the first time he played a sebene song from his coming album and I can only say that it will solely depend on his marketing strategy otherwise that song is fire.

Congolese Music / CHIKITO MAKINU
« on: February 09, 2015, 16:52 »
I want to agree with Sly's observation that chikito may not go far because of his image. Have been following Chikito keenly and have come to a conclusion that the guy needs urgent image help. Then again he needs advice on what to post and what not to post on social media. This is one guy who will take a photo of himself in a lodging with very old television set and post it on facebook. As if that is not enough will take a close snap of his face which is very ugly and post. Surely someone should help this boy. Most of the pics he posts on fb are all suggestive that he is struggling which is not good.
