Congolese Music / Manda Chante & BANA OK
« on: August 13, 2019, 20:32 »
I have watched a couple of their concerts and it’s refreshing to watch him sing OK Jazz songs but I’ve got questionss:

What is his plan for the band?

Are they releasing new music or is it just a Kinshasa based cover band?

Was Wenge Reference a band of free lance studio musicians or actual members. What becomes of them?

I’d like to see him grow the band and polish their sound but there are no original members for appropriate guidance. Which is the same underlying issue I’m seeing for the original OK Jazz managed by Franco’s son.

Congolese Music / AHHH BOYOKA NZEMBO OYO!!! FABREGAS ELENGI
« on: August 02, 2019, 15:24 »
Lady Bazu would be sooo Proud of this guy!  I have been playing this album front to back and put Fally on the back burner. He’s got the talent, the charisma, and he’s a student of Congolese music. It’s so obvious on Cible that I have now labeled him Fabro L’Historien

My wife a full bloodied American got sick of me playing this song so much that she asked, “Who the f*ck is Stephany?” ????????????

He wasn’t my favorite in Maison Mere, but he’s my favorite now. I’m officially on the Fabregas bandwagon.

Congolese Music / OK Jazz is back... well sort of
« on: March 06, 2019, 14:21 »
Emongo Luambo’s only son revived the band of his late father Franco 3 or so years ago. Since then, they’ve been doing shows at Chez 1-2-3 where even Djo Mpoyi’s son Erick (who sounds just like his father) joined for a stint.

As far as I know, Emongo is only managing the band. But I believe the only way this will work effectively if he becomes the face of the band or grooms someone young. They’re also going to need to find talented songwriters and composers as TP OK Jazz was not just a band but a rival school to Tabu Ley’s Afrisa. With that said, the video below isn’t an original but an updated version of one of Franco’s compositions. Perhaps Archos can give us more information about their next moves.

Congolese Music / Forum Member News: I Got Married Saturday
« on: October 18, 2018, 14:40 »
This past Saturday, I married my best friend. As I’m sitting on my patio in Montego Bay, Jamaica, puffing on a Cuban cigar, everything is still sinking. After the honeymoon this woman has to come home with me daily lol. At any rate, wanted to show you guys some pictures and some Facebook videos of our day.

I’m blessed to have a found a queen who has embraced the Congolese culture. You must watch Father-Daughter dance in its entirety and share with everyone you know. ????

This should be an exciting post.  Here in the US, April 20th is unofficially Weed Day.  Although illegal in many states in the country, Americans still find ways to indulge, I'm one of them, although I'm not subjected to just one day.  So I have to ask.  Do any of you partake? What do you listen to when you do, aside from Bob Marley...  ;D

Here are my top 5:

The musical talents of OK Jazz always exacerbates my high.  The arranging in this song always does it for me.

I have always been a fan of this song, but it was one night while sitting on the couch and smoking a nice fat one with my girlfriend, she became entranced with it and for good reason!

ya Jossart and Dindo both looked quite stoned in this video, probably why I like it so much lol.

Anything Ferre sings is gold for me. This happens to be one of my fiancé favorite songs.

The bassline and rhythm can help mellow you out with the right type of bud.  I strongly believe Franco himself was an actual habitual smoker.  (I have my reasons why).

Happy Smoking Friends...

If you don't do it... don't pass judgement on the ones who do...  8)

Congolese Music / Letis Madilu & Bana System
« on: December 12, 2017, 00:27 »
I recently discovered this pretty dope album. I am still listening to it, but I'm feeling the track Ma Molangi.

Archos can you give us some backrground on Letis Madilu and his group Bana System? I assume he's the son of the late Madilu System?

Congolese Music / R.I.P. Forum Member Mwana Nsalu
« on: December 06, 2017, 17:45 »
It is with deep regret to inform the members of this forum that Ms. Stacey Bazu also known on this forum as Mwana Nsalu passed away Monday from breast cancer at age 35.  A lot of us remember Ms. Bazu as an original member from previous forums where we've grown to know each other as a collective group for over 15 years.  It is on these forums where she wowed us with her talents as a Congolese-American singing songs in Lingala and posting them online and displaying her passion for Odemba/Rhumba music.  I am utterly heartbroken and saddened over this news. She leaves behind her father, Guy Angrand and a young son.

Congolese Music / Ahhhh Fabregas Elengi Eh!!!!
« on: February 18, 2015, 02:59 »
Today, I've been snowed in and I've been spending with a whole bottle of Crown Royal XO Canadian Whiskey and Fabregas' album but the following song has got me HOOKED:

I thought he was foolish for leaving Werrason so early, but I see he's the wave of the future.  Even my mother who is in love with the old Koffi says this young chap has got it.  *Cheers*

Congolese Music / Archos? Any word on this album?
« on: January 29, 2015, 20:55 »
Pepe Ndombe has been dead for nearly 3 years and they still haven't released his album Tendresse which they were supposed to release before his death but is now posthumous. Any word on when it is being released? This is getting ridiculous.  Also, what are people saying about Elba's new album, Bombe Atomique?

Congolese Music / Once Again Simaro Saves Music
« on: June 02, 2014, 12:11 »
Just when I began to lose hope with the music coming out of Kinshasa these days, this man always delivers and saves the day...

Now if only they would release Pepe Ndombe's posthumous album, Tendresse, all will be well in the world.

A song that helped propel him to higher heights in OK Jazz, yet during a "tribute" concert to Franco, Malage straight jacks it up.  Not sure if he was tired or drunk, but this was hard to watch. Position your cursor into 1:09 to watch the set. Also, I'm not sure if the title of the video is correct. I can't tell if it was a joint concert between members of Zaiko & Bana OK in Hommage of Franco or an official Bana OK concert featuring Zaiko as I didn't Simaro or Nyoka Longo anywhere in the video.

Congolese Music / Old School Alert: Tribute to Tabu Ley
« on: December 23, 2013, 02:26 »
Hey old friends. Just wanted to share an interesting video of older generation starts paying tribute to the iconic Tabu Ley. Verckys, Faya Tess, Djuna Djanana, Josky and others are in the video. It's a very sad realization to note though that Simaro, who lives in Kin and well into his 70s, is in better shape than Josky who is younger and staying in Europe. In the video you see Josky sitting down the entire time and his speech is slurred at times. Anyway, enjoy the clip.
