Congolese Music / In Defense of Bill Clinton Kalonji
« on: July 27, 2015, 22:48 »
I was watching some clips from Ndobolhino and found where they clipped together Bill and Brigade's appearance on Vodacom's Best of the Best on facebook. Most of the people that commented on that clip gave it to Brigade over Bill Clinton citing that Bill is finished.  Some of the commentators must have forgotten that Bill has been putting in work since the 1990s as opposed to Brigade who made it to the scene thanks to Effrakata (2003?).

While I can agree that Brigade is "hot" in today's world of animation with his harmonic and melodious animations with his high pitched voice, no one rivaled Bill at the top of his game from Intervention Rapide (please correct me if I'm wrong) to Tindika lokito (all with werra). His level or creativity is observed in all his works check the video below at 6:00 with just him and the Keyboard. If there was ever a Hall of Fame for Atalakus, Bill will be in the first Five atalakus. He may not be quite as good as he used to be but every unknown atalaku wants to be like Bill. They both have two different styles but to me, Bill is superior to Brigade.

So what's your opinion of the two?

« on: July 10, 2015, 16:21 »
Ahhh Petit Reagan had something going at that time. he looked like he had a future. Anyone here knows whatever happened to him? Did he appear in other albums? Kiriku always reminded me of him.

Congolese Music / Musical Gem of Yesteryears
« on: July 06, 2015, 16:10 »
Today's musicians really need to pay attention to songs like this one. I used to religiously listen to this way back. It was only recently that I found out that the Great Alain Makaba was lead and you can feel it. Crisp riffs, just hyping no real animation, bass work impeccable, yet danceable. This whole album is worth a listen.

Congolese Music / Who is the atalaku in this generique?
« on: June 29, 2015, 15:34 »
I know Diego is one of the two animators. What's the name of the second guy? And has he been in any other groups? I've always liked the way he did business. But sadly, I think he's phased out from current music groups.

Who is the soloist as well? he's got good licks!

Congolese Music / Female Atalakus
« on: June 28, 2015, 13:34 »
So other than Ferre Gola's Ruth Nzele, not too many female atalakus are making a wave. The one that showed up in Koffi's Album a few years ago is now Soeur Nene. Generally, they either are sidelined because they are women or they fear the outcome of going into secular music as a woman. But when you get a woman that can actually animate the crowd or in generiques and sebenes, it could be great.

I like how Monik Tenday goes into it at 3:30. So my question is what does it take to succeed as a female animatrice in today's competitive mucis scene?

If you were to pick between Roi David and Lobeso, who gets your vote and why? I liked Roi David the little time he spent in WMMM. Lobeso doesn't really catch me as an atalaku. To me he's more of a singer with a little base in his voice. Roi David had personality and knew how to move the crowd.

Congolese Music / Hello Everyone
« on: June 26, 2015, 15:22 »
Hello,

I figured I should introduce myself since I was finally able to log in which I am very happy about. The name is Sunny, I am originally Nigerian but now  American since 1997. I currently live in Colorado. I was born in Niger (Niamey). I speak fluent french and I listen to nothing but Congolese music (for the most part). My first Congolese cassette was Zaiko Langa Lang au Japon in 1987 when i was still in Niger. I've been hooked since and follow the progression of a lot of congolese musicians to date. I do not understand lingala but sure do appreciate this music. As I follow trends in music here, I will have a lot of questions now that I can interact with all of you (Be ready...lol)  Again, thank you for allowing me to learn more about congolese music. Merci pour m'avoir  accueillir!
