Very nice collection. I listened to them all. To me the last 2 was the most pleasing. The guitars and recordings are at high level, you can compare it to the contemporary productions in Kinshasa, especially Sunday. Didn't know this branch at all, thank you for the introduction! Would have been a pity to miss it.
Don't know too much about this band, apart from that they were from Gabon. They played Congolese style, and I can say they did it well. Here is a great tune from their repertoire:
Oh, very interesting story! I never wondered Orchestra Virunga has such an adventurous background. Very nice article, I will post it on the front page!
I also need to check these tracks one by one to be able to imagine the "world" of this artist. I never heard of him before, only the band names mentioned, it is good to know who was behind these!
Thanks for the info! It would be interesting to listen to this record. I liked how Nene played in Minzoto Wella Wella. Maybe this would be interesting, too.
I have a friend from Nkay who was with him at the university at Brazzaville. They were in the same class. He said he was a friendly man. He had already been known as a guitarist when he was attending the university, maybe they released Les Nouveaux Missiles around that time. My friend remembers once the teacher asked something, he applied to answer, and the teacher asked him "are you still at the university?" meaning being talented he should go and build his career as a musician. After that, he quit the university.
This latter tune reminds me of the song of another band. I think this group was also from Katanga, but maybe I am wrong. But there is so big similarity in the sound of the chorus:
Indeed. The sound is very well balanced, the vocals are very pleasing, and the lead guitar is audible as it should be. I am usually very pleased with Kenyan recordings, at least regarding those songs that I listen to.
Mboka Liya is playing in the Forge in London this Friday. They start at about 8 I think. Best to go by that time, if it starts later, still you won't miss anything.
I live in Deptford, London and I recently discovered Congolese music when I stumbled across Maestro Bar.
I am now in love with this great music and learning more every day about it. Does anyone know of more concerts in London? Particularly where Mboka Liya is playing, he hasn't been to Maestro in months.
Thanks.
I will ask for you where Mboka is playing in the near future.
