Congolese Music / Swede Swede from Equateur
« on: August 18, 2014, 12:51 »
Have you known this band before? My friend sent me this video. It is definately not soukous or rhumba, but it is interesting to see how people adopted their music to modern instruments in other regions.

So I noticed there is a bit of chaos around naming stlyes of Congolese songs. It is normal however, it is how it happens in every culture. It also happens that something is named differently internationally than how it is named locally. This is just how culture works and developes. But I feel it would be useful now to clarify how to call what, so if you feel you can contribute to making things clearer, please help us! Let us know what you call soukous, rhumba, kwassa kwassa, ngwashuma, ndombolo, lingala, etc. I feel there is much problem especially around the use of the name: SOUKOUS. Could you clarify what it refers to actually? From what I read online, it seemed to me it is often used as a term to refer to Congolese music in general. Wikipedia, for example, seem to introduce the meaning of this word that way.

Let us know how you learnt it! If you think you are an expert in this regard, let your voice be heard here!

Congolese Music / Zaiko Masina Suite
« on: June 18, 2014, 22:25 »
A great new seben from Zaiko. It seems a new order will be placed at Villageafro :)

What I really like about this is that the recording quality is decent, and the mixing is good: the solo guitar is loud enough, the animation is not distorting and not too loud. What I don't like, but it is a general problem is the guitar distortion tone. They always use this setting but it is not a good tone I think. They should listen to Roga Roga or Durell Loemba to select distortion tone. But what is pleasing is that it seems Nyoka Longo can still manage to organize good concerts.

This is a compilation of the songs from the concerts of Renato Mondele. He is playing every week in Maestro Bar, London. Please share this to your friends who like Congolese music. It may give you an idea where to spend your night if you are in London on fridays or sundays, and looking for a Congolese music event!
