In wake of Koffi Olomide's 45 year anniversary special. I am going to the first debate here. In fact I want to hear from you guys. There are those who claim that Koffi Olomide co-founded Viva La Musica. This leads to my question. Do you think that Koffi should have been a member of Viva La Musica? If so, why? If not, why?

Let's start the debate.

Those who claim that don't know the definition of being a co-founder. Koffi Olomidé never said that he was a co-founder. He always mentions Shaguy Sharufa as founder of Viva la Musica. Koffi Olomidé himself was not present in Kinshasa when Viva la Musica got founded. He was in Geneva at the moment. When Koffi heard that information he sended a cassette to Wemba to console him about the way he got fired by his friends from Yoka Lokolé and gave 2 songs as gift, Ebalé Mbongé being these songs. Ebalé Mbongé would be Viva's first song released on Vinyl. In song Papa Wemba would sing how he got abandoned by his friends.

It was started ex'singer Viva la Musica singer Maray Maray in interviews he made with Teddy Mola. For him, Koffi is a co-founder because 80% of the songs Papa Wemba made in the 2 first years of Viva la Musica were written by Koffi Olomidé and made Viva la Musica exist.

Koffi Olomidé would never be accepted in Viva la Musica, because his singing abilities weren't strong. Back in those days they were recruiting singers based on their singing abilities. Koffi was back then seen as a 'faux chanteur'. He started his singing career because Max Soki and Verckys pushed him to do that. When releasinghis two first singles Sango Ndambo & Asso (with help from Pepe Felly Manuaku), the staff around Papa Wemba  and Wemba himself weren't happy. For them Koffi shouldn't sing and just give Papa Wemba songs. Papa Wemba would in interviews often say that in interviews in the mid-90s when journalists would asking about the beef by saying "Koffi is not meant to be singer. He should had stayed a songwriter".
They anyway ended up recording Princessse ya Synza together but the anger was still there. Espcially when Koffi recorded his 4th single Samba Samba with Viva la Musica without Papa Wemba authorization. King Kester Emeneya, Djuna Djanana and Patcho Star getting suspended and almost fired. Emeneya would mention that moment often in interviews and saying that he taught Koffi singing. Its only a few moments later that Papa Wemba shorted it out with Koffi by recording Anibo and other singles.

Koffi Olomide not being member of Viva la Musica helped him in the beef 20 years later and himself he being proud of it. Saying often proudly that he's of the rare bandleaders to not have been under direction of another bandleader in his music-career. In Historia Musica that he made with Debaba in 1983 he the function president. But the band didn't last long because of ....... Richard Mukena would mention that moment to mock Koffi in the video they made to diss Koffi (Les Allies contre Ben Laden). If Koffi would have been a former bandmember of Viva la Musica he would not earn the same respect he used to have as an indepedent solo-artists when releasing singles in 1978 & 1979. He had then the nickname "l'Etudiant Le Plus Celebre" and back then living in Europe was seen as special. He used to inspire many young intellectuals with his interviews in French. He lost it a little bit in the late 80s when he came with Western African traditional clothes, being inspired by Lutumba Simaro who would come as a wiseman on tv with those traditional clothes. But back then the young generation were busy with "la guerre de la sape" and seeing it as ridiculuze. Many people mocking Koffi for it and rivals and Clan Wenge using it years later to attack him, about not knowing any noting of wearing brandclothes and la sape. While Koffi just wore those traditional clothes to have that look of a wiseman/poet. Although explaining it multiple times in interviews people never get it. They dont even known that Koffi used to give Emeneya and Papa Wemba clothes from Europe as gift when coming to Kinshasa in 1978 and 1979 and them coming to Europe in 1980. Emeneya only mentioned it once in an interview but people didn't notice it.

Who mentored Koffi as a singer/guitarist? I've always been curious who were his role models as he evolving as a complete musician

The man who taught Koffi to play guitar is Vieux Vero. Who would years be among Quartier Latin's first bandmembers. Emeneya helped him to improve his singing-skills and when starting Historia Musica with Debaba, Debaba would also help him and show him some technics like for example how to have stamina when singing in concerts, etc.

Before starting his music-career Koffi Olomidé had Seigneur Rocheareau Tabu Ley, Lutumba Simaro, Los Nickelos (a band based in Belgium made by Congolese students, they inspired Zaiko as well), Max Mongali of Yeye National (Yeye National was like Los Nickelos a band of Congolese students living in Belgium. They used to call them "Belgicains" which got later shortned to "Djikain" and "Djika". He also used to like foreign artists like Julio Igelasis very much,  especially French artists. During the 1980s many people would accuse him for translating french songs into lingala. He would refer to it in the song Dieu Voit Tout "nga bazalaka koloba pe balobaka, nazuaka nzembo ya mondele na bongola ngo na mangala". In the same song Dieu Voit Tout where he sings about his death, he sung that if he would die one day, want to be remembered as Lutumba Simaro's and Tabu Ley's heir. It's not for nothing that he paid years later tribute to both legends with the concepts "Koffi chante Tabu Ley" in 2010 and "Koffi chante Lutumba" in 2011 who he considered as his idols. Like every youngster of that time Koffi was also fan of Zaiko and had first Evoloko as idol. Its only in the years of 13 Apotre that he started to reveal that. According to his childhood friend Sambalé from Lemba during an interview with Vicent Tshiluizi, before moving to Europe in 1976 he approached Evoloko to give him songs as ghostwriter but Evoloko refusing it which made him move to Papa Wemba. Journalist/activist Chrisitian Bola who is a pro-Evoloko fan made last year a few videos on facebook to attack Wemba-fans and praise Evoloko. In one of his videos he claimed that Koffi was stolen by Wemba's camp to get songs lol and that Koffi already knew Evoloko because of Evoloko performing for Koffi's family, graduation or something like that.

In the period of 1978-1979 and 1982 to 1992, various almost all bands helped him to become the person he came today. There are also unreleased albums of the 1980s with Pepe Kalle, Tabu Ley and Bozi Boziana. When Koffi gave his first concert with Quartier Latin in Novembre 1986 at Hotel Venus almost all big names of our music were present. But when finally being on the top from 1992 everything changed and he started to get problems with almost every artist.

Did Koffi ever receive respect from Rocheareau Tabu Ley and Lutumba Simaro? I know his music catered mostly to women with love songs, but I noticed he sung about life in his earlier albums. When Koffi started QL, was his vision to have a group  albums after his own? Or was it just to have a touring band instead of hiring session musicians? I've always been curious what his mind was at in the 1990s, because his career went into another dimension.

Is Debaba still alive? I can't find anything on him after the 1990s, he just disappeared

Debaba passed away in 2011. Back then the musicians of Ferre paid tribute to him because Debaba was one of Ferre's role models. Debaba became a brother in christ in 1994 when things didn't work out with Choc Stars. He was among the first of regular musicians to switch towards gospel. In the same period late Bimi Ombale also switched to gospel and Carlyto Lassa following.

Koffi often was often praised by Tabu Ley and Simaro Lutumba in interviews over the year. Both guys would often surprise him during interviews of journalist Paulin Mukendi by videos or getting on stage and ask Koffi a question. Koffi Olomidé would do vice-versa when they would get interviewed by Paulin Mukendi. Until his death Lutumba would visit Koffi at his house in Mont-Fleury and being guest at parties and concerts. Things went wrong between Koffi and Tabu Ley because of court-jesters informing Koffi that Tabu Ley mocked him in an interview, while Tabu Ley just said nothing bad but jocked about how Koffi's car broke down and them having to walk. Koffi also taking personal that Tabu Ley said that was dissapointed in him for copying Wenge instead of making proper rumba-music. It only became worser when Tabu Ley's son journalist Marc Tabu got attacked in a concert. Tabu Ley being really furious and making multiple interviews about it. They ended up by reconciling but not long later Shaka-Kongo who was a spy for the camp of Kester, Werrason & Karmapa was secretly recording those reunions and in those reunions Koffi said that the old guard already profited financial to much in the previous regimes and if it was him he would have already made them dissapear from earth. It made Tabu Ley really furious and making an interview with Thierry Dawa saying that if the person wouldn't apology quick he would mention his name in public and make him getting hated by everybody. They shorted it out along with the rest of Maisha Parc's board and Tabu Ley apparently shouted hard at Koffi and Koffi even kneeling down in front of him. A few years later, Tabu Ley was victim of a stroke. It affected his health and it made him being forgotten by those who were in the music-scene. Koffi paying tribute to him by coming with "Koffi chante Tabu Ley" touched and he made with his son Marc Tabu an interview to thank Koffi. According to those close to him he used to watch that dvd often and it was making him very happy.

When Koffi was coming back in Kinshasa after releasing albums he didn't had a band. He was often hiring session musicians or just performing with other bands such as Victoria Eleison, Choc Stars and co. But when performing with session musicians he felt that the concerts weren't going well because of them not having a cohesion and when performing with big bands like Victoria he had always to share a big part of the money with them. Emeneya would years later often making fun of him in interviews by on a bad tone that Koffi used to do "first parts" of Victoria Eleison.

When being asked why he formed Quartier Latin, he always refer to the concert he once hold with Choc Stars at Kimpwanza. The concert was sold out, but when he got the money from Ben Nyamabo he felt that it wasn't fair. Because he just received peannuts while they made big money.

It made him really mad but he couldn't say anything since that he was backed by his band. From that day he decided to form his own band. Which he did later that year. Koffi was living between Kinshasa, Brussels, Paris and Geneva in the 1980s. For Europe concerts he was often getting help from session musicians like Rigo Star and sometimes being backed by Viva la Musica. When being in Kinshasa he would get backed by Quartier Latin Entreprise. Some bandmembers weren't even considering it as a proper band in the first years and seeing it as a nzong-nzing. However, Koffi would say that he would bring them to one day. First they didn't mind and were patient. Seeing that after Rue d'Amour/Henriquet them starting to tour in Africa. But after a few years they were getting frustrated for not going to Europe and them always making pre-records in Kinshasa to see albums being recorded in Europe by Rigo Star and Manu Lima. Some even started to sabotate concerts and them leaving one by one(Fofo le Collegien, Toussaint Indianga, Djunafa, late Yoto Delta Force, etc.). It coincidend with musicians of Flash Musica slowly starting to join Quartier Latin one by one (Rocky Blanchard, Suzuki and co).

So in Congolese music, people who switch to gospel music are those who are considered "finished" musically? I've noticed that even Meje30, King Kester, among others were flirting with Gospel music around the time their success started to go down.

yes and no. Anyway nobody in gospel music that used to be a big star in regular music had crazy success in gospel music. It were only those were small in regular music that ended up to get that. For example, Thomas Lokofe who had a past with Quartier Latin or Kool Matope who used to be Gatho Beevans' rival until switching to gospel music.

Kester Emeneya wanted to switch to gospel music because he almost died in 2010 and religious people coming with stories that he would get bigger succes when switching to gospel music adding that he would not live long if he would continue with regular music. Kester Emeneya was ready but didn't knew how he would feed his family by switching to gospel, also he didn't want to be mocked by his rivals and his entourage around him also not really helping. Not long after that he got contacted by his friend politician Boshab former head of political party PPRD to be present at their congress in Stade des Martyrs to support Joseph Kabila. He had only to show his face and get some $200.000 without performing. He accepted the offer although having serious health issues.

Papa Wemba was also about to switch to gospel music when being in prison for the ngulu-affair. He was looking for big pastors to get him on that path but those pastors were his fans hahaha and were startstruck when talking to him. So they weren't pushing him to do that. Also Wemba had the same entourage like when getting arrested. So it was mission impossible. He still ended by recording two gospel songs in Somo Trop (Kombo Monene & Numero d'Ecrou), also started preaching for a short time at his Zenith 2003 and often talking about god in interviews but after some months he stopped.

Carlyto switched to gospel music when his album "Makolo ya Massiya" being on the top of the music-charts. He's the only artist from regular music who quit it when being on the top. It has been said at that time, that he contracted HIV from one of his sidechicks and that he was afraid to die. But when being asked by journalists he was always denying and giving other reasons that led to stop with regular music. In testimonies he would say "in the spiritual world demons would throw diseases to people who are invisible. The world saying that you have aids, but when going to the doctor he wont dont detect it" and stuff like that.

Bimi Ombale's retirement from music came unexcepted. Back then he had his own band "Basilique Loningisa". Bimi Ombale switched to gospel music because he was diagnosed with AIDS and thought that he would die soon. When doing testimonies he would often claim that he God cured him from that disease.

About Debaba I forgot the mention that he was the one who made late Marie Misamu known in the gospel world. Marie Misamu was one of the biggest gospel artist in Congolese music. After Defao's departure he became the main star of Choc Stars, all big names had at some point left the band even Roxy Tshimpaka. Debaba then becoming the Vice-President of the band. But he wasn't able to have fame with the band which was gone since Defao's departure. They also failed that get back in Europe where a tour was planned for 1992. In his last years he linked to a return to Viva la Musica. He even backed Papa Wemba with some musicians of Tambour Levallois (including Bendoson), musicians like Gauthier Mukoka, Stella Uomo, Dindo Yogo, etc. when he came in 1993 for some concerts his sponsor. Maybe that its there where Bendoson got the name Nouvelle Ecriture. Because back then the new formula of Choc Stars was called Nouvelle Ecriture but nobody noticing it because of them not having any succes. Early 1994 Debaba decided to quit regular music for gospel music. I dont know what he exact reason was because I wasn't really following gospel music and never do. Its only because of my relatives following it that I knew a few things.

I am going to play devil advocates. I will say both reasons. Why Koffi should have joined Viva La Musica and why Koffi should have not joined Viva La Musica.

Why Koffi Olomide should have been a member of Viva La Musica.
He would have been Papa Wemba's reliable duet partner

Koffi Olomide being a songwriter, he was already considered golden treasure by some people's eyes. While it was true, he was considered a "faux chanteur" but if you listen to a few songs, his voice melded beautifully with Papa Wemba's voice.

Listen to Bien Amiee

Listen how lovely Koffi Olomide and Papa Wemba sounded together. Listen how the harmony was always on point. You can feel that Koffi and Wemba understood one another without too much difficulty.

Papa Wemba always considered Koffi as his "young brother". Though, he was against Koffi being a singer, he eventually decided to give a shot to sing with Koffi. When he sang with Koffi, it was clear that Wemba wanted to make sure to sing with him.

Papa Wemba even admitted that he was with Koffi when preparing a tribute song to Mobutu's first wife, he decided to sing with Koffi instead of singing solo.

2:30-3:30

Koffi Olomide would have been a loyal soldier to Papa Wemba in my opinion because he would always make sure to sing well to please Papa Wemba and pleasing Papa Wemba is not always easy. But I think Koffi would have been beneficial to Papa Wemba for three reasons.
1) Koffi is a hard worker which is something Papa Wemba loved.
2) Koffi wants to be validated all the time.
3) Koffi understands Papa Wemba musically.

More importantly, let's say people like Kester Emeneya were to go, Koffi would become Papa Wemba's number one singing collaborator because he would work harder to get Wemba's confidence on a regular basis.

I will comeback to say why Koffi should have not joined Viva La Musica.

Why Koffi Olomide should have not been a member of Viva La Musica.
It would have made his relationship with Reddy Amisi worser

As people know, Koffi was the one who brought Reddy Amisi to Papa Wemba for Viva La Musica. But if Koffi had been a member of Viva La Musica, there would have been a very ugly civil cold war between Koffi Olomide and Reddy Amisi. We know that there was a civil war between Reddy Amisi and Stino Mubi, imagine Koffi and Reddy. It would have been worser because they would have gotten into physical fights especially as they would have liked to prove to Papa Wemba that they are the most hard working one. Also, Koffi and Reddy would try to snitch on one another to Papa Wemba so Wemba would favor him over the other one.

That is the reason why he should have not been a Viva La Musica member.
