My favorite post Bercy Koffi concert was LSC Christmas 2002. The chemistry this team had during the Effrakata to ADE period was magical - the success of Effrakata gave them so much momentum and confidence. Sometimes in the smaller venue concerts you get a better sense of the raw talent of a band
Indeed. On the appearance side i think it’s a couple of factors - when their relationship went official he seemingly forced her early retirement, thus impacting her ability to earn independently. From the looks of things here, he just wanted her to stay home, cook, and bear his kids while being on edge of when he’s going to lash out on her. At the same time, she has to worry the young side chicks that can take his main base and put her out at some point.
Even in my life I’ve seen 10/10 badies from my youth that we wanted completely change with age when they chose to be with that cool, “bad” guy rather than following advice and reading the writing on the wall of a manipulative man. Very sad situation.
My goodness - this is so sad. He had the most effortless voice Ive heard to this date. Makolo Massiya and Ousmane Bakayoko among others are songs that literally brings one to tears. RIP
Speaking of which, do you remember when Koffi had a plan to make an all-female band in 2008-09? That had everyone fuming after QL (the real QL) was fumbled completely and he had extreme trust issues letting men shine. Fortunately Cindy (herself not wanting to be shared) made him pack that idea up quickly.
This would be the first time that Madilu actually had his band participating on his solo album. Before hand, he was only working with folks like Rigo Star, Dally Kimoko, Lokassa ya Mbongo, Caen Madoka, Nyboma, Malage de Lugendo, Ballou Canta, Luciana and Wuta Mayi. I wonder why this time, he decided to get his actual band into his solo album?
Back then you weren’t considered a true solo unless you had your own backing band so it was in part due to peer pressure.
There's so many drummers in Congo, I don't think it's extremely difficult to find a replacement for Kakol. I don't understand this fear to force his retirement
This is the same Kakol that had Cambodge as his understudy then years later got into multiple fist fights with him (also due to shared sidechicks) to not let him have any place in WMM. Cambodge had to bring his own drumkit to tests because Kakol refused to let him use his, which was crazy.
The silence of the leader of the group is soo loud. Sad that she has nowhere to go.
This is like the 3rd instance of this going public and then crickets from Nsone until everyone moves on from their anger of the abuse. He’s afraid of performing without Kakol after all these years.
Being an ex-dancer is one of the most stigmatized professions in Africa in general. It’s fast life until your beauty fades and you no longer serve a purpose to the boss only to be replaced with a younger girl
I know an ex-dancer who had to leave the country and restart in the US because her dancing profession was equal to being a Prost** which meant she could not find a regular job to support herself. So I can’t imagine how much Linda is against the odds by leaving clean with the kids stuck in the middle

@CM Prince there was that one interview recently where he said during his legal battles, Aliya and most of his circle abandoned ship until all was kosher again because of the sexual assault aspect - (his words ->) Cindy was the only person that held him down in Kin, cooked, and did all the stuff Alya was supposed to do to justify why they got divorced.
It made me view the situation differently and come to terms with the fact that she will always be present. Ive come to terms and accept that he had a generational run and influence but his music is finished.
It’ll only take 1 singer complimenting Cindy to shut down this QL album for 20 more years kiekie. Im shocked actually that they made 3 songs
Man, Sonor is only 49. People dont talk about how young the Extra team was in their prime. Many are right there in age to the DRC 5th gen (early-mid 70’s) whom we still see as young because there is no 6th gen to speak of at this time
He’s a great bandleader - takes care of his musicians before himself and lets the have space to be known
HBD Kibense - Molière na bisso and now restauranteur. One of my favorites from him:
That Staff Executif de Quartier Latin (childhood friends Gunther, Gabin, Buboul, Hugo Tanzambi, Ya Ize Bola etc) of the 90’s-2000’s kept Koffi in check and protected his image in his prime when he got caught in his antics. Otherwise all the drama and nonsense he got into later in his career would have finished him much earlier.
Like you said now it’s all family and pire petits… no one dares to say « Prés, oyo vraiment ekoki te ».
Fally, Ferre and the other 5 gen artists can’t even have this discussion with record labels since all of their songs were written by someone else, even the time they were in bands. At least here Koffi has a basis as he was a songwriter/sorta guitarist from day 1.
In any genre past and present I don’t think there are many singular artists that penned 800+ songs personally from start to finish. I remember people being shocked when it was discovered that some of Simaro’s and Franco’s biggest hits were in fact not written by them even though they claimed that when they were alive. Tabu Ley we heard many revelations also of his ghostwriters.
816 or so songs potentially bought by a large American label. Even songs he wrote for others aside from Wemba.
This is pretty unheard of in African music…. with all the nasty rights inheritance and royalty drama from deceased musicians families in the genre, this seems rather ingenious if he gets the right price.
If this goes through it will pave the way for artists on the legendary status
My thoughts… - Huge guaranteed payday now for 50 years of music instead of collecting royalties bit by bit which has everyone not making much money off just streaming.
- The buyer can monetize the catalog globally through streaming, licensing, sampling and better royalty collection.
- Much easier for Koffi’s estate than inheriting rights to 800+ songs from multiple labels he was with in his career. Some don’t even exist anymore.
- Risk is he still getting more listeners even at his age with more streaming reach and old song going viral from time to time. Maybe the catalog becomes worth multiples more but this may take decades.
- I can foresee a bunch of ghostwriters coming out of the woodwork to contest ownership if they wrote songs claimed as his.
