You got two different baluba's. You have Balubakat, who live in Katanga (Haut-Lomani & Tanganyika district). They speak Swahili & Kiluba (which is diffrent from Tshiluba). Laurent-Desire Kabila was a mulubakat. The other baluba's are Baluba-Kasai, they speak Tshiluba. Their ground is Kasai Oriental, they migrated there in the 17th century when there was alot of dryness in Katanga. When they went to Kasai they met other tribes (Bakuba, Binji, etc.) and with the years going on their languague Kiluba developed into Tshiluba. During the colonisation alot went to Kananga in Kasai-Occident (the Lulua-district), wth them as point becoming even the majority which didn't please the Lulua. Then when the independence came close,the Belgian wanted to create a civil-war in Congo with them creating division everywhere and that also happened in Kasai. The Lulua created the association "Les freres Lulua", because they felt that they would lose their identity and ground with the Baluba-Kasai dominting them everywhere. From 1959 the Lulua started to kill baluba's in Kananga. The lulua's and Baluba were even fighting in Kinshasa. Albert Kalonji decided at some point to create the South Kasai-Empire to protect the Baluba's, because of Lumumba and Kasa-Vubu doing nothing. He was then supported by multinationals who wanted to get diamonds there. But then Mobutu & Lumumba decided to bomb Mbuji-Mayi which killed alot of people and it made alot of Baluba hate Lumumba. But alot of people already forgot that story. The secession only lasted 2 years (1960-1962). After that the Lulua and Baluba made peace. I guess that Bill Clinton Kalonji got the inspiration of the Mbuji Mayi-Kananga animation from there. The Baluba's living Kananga are a little bit diffrent from those living in Kasai-Oriental who are very conservative.

Back in the late 80's of the 19th century when the Belgians just started the colonisation and the years after it they brought alot of Baluba-Kasai to Katanga as punishment, because of them being against the colonisation. That's why you got alot of Baluba-Kasai in Katanga. But people living in Katanga (Bemba, Aruund "Lunda", Balubakat) don't like them, because they dominate all the business there. Back in 1991 and 1992 you had there a massacre instrumentalisted by Mobutu, Nguz Karl I Bond and Kyungu Wa Ku Mwanza, with alot of Baluba-Kasai returning to Kasai. It also happened in 1960, when Moise Tshombe proclaimed the indepedence of Katanga. Alot of Baluba-Kasai returned then to Kasai, but they didn't knew Tshiluba only Shwahili because of them living more than 50 years in Katanga. This all made the elders living in Kasai deciding that all Baluba's have to learn Tshiluba everywhere where they are and all generation to not forget their roots. But alot of them living in Kinshasa and Europe only talk Lingala.

Yes. Thats also why Mobutu wanted to bring him to Mbuji Mayi after that he betrayed him. Thinking that they lynch him there, but Albert Kalonji refused, because he saw him as his brother despite all those problems (they used to be in the same party before they split). Then after that they decided to bring him to Katanga where he was tortured months long and then killed in a small village.

Great stuff man, just a lil the edit...Lulua ppl are also Baluba, they were referred as Baluba-Lulua. Like you said in the 17th century a group of baluba migrated toward West. Tha was the second wave of baluba..first wave was by what is known now as Lulua ppl. They went as far as in the Lulua district. In the second wave they only migrated an stopped where what was known as Kasai-Oriental. As you mentioned Baluba(2nd wave) during colonisation moved toward Kananga(Luluabourg) because the Kasai Oriental where they settled was under an Apertheid-type like controlled by the Flamish

For example you had to have a permit in other to visit places like Bakwanga(Mbujimayi). Schooling stopped at either 4th grade or 6th( it is said Lumumba completed only 4th grade level).This forced lots of them to migrate outside.  They were at first welcomed in the Lulua district because of their Commun ancestry! Then came 58 to 60. Belgium ppl creating frictions

My dad was only one year old when the Lulua vs Baluba conflict started and thanks to the friendship my grandfather had with the Chief of Kete people(Baketa) they, 9of them(grandparents and 7 kids) were escorted out of Luiza all the way to Gandajika(Kasai Oriental birthPlace of Bruno Tshibala and Noel Tshiani) And I carry tha Chief’s name. Grandfather on the other hand wasn’t that lucky, when u are a well known wealthy Muluba in Port-Franky(Ilebo) Same village as a certain E.Tshisekedi...got beaten to death leaving my grandma, pregnant of my mom, and 5 kids

Sad how 30 years later Nguz and Kyiungu used to same tactics to kill and get ride of baluba from katanga(had sum uncles and cousins victim of it) forgetting that centuries ago when the Luba Empire went all the way down to Zambia, the Lunda’s were referred as friend.. and even in Tshiluba it actually means friends Mulunda= Friend, Balunda=Friends

@Mvulusi96 and @BG-Ground

To what extent is tribal issue strong in DRC and what are the prejudices against the Lubas that make other tribes sought of not like the fact that a Tshiluba has ascended to the presidency? I have seen for example what before election and during campaigns were a certain page posted something alluding to say be careful with Felix as Tshilubas cannot be trusted. They went on to say for example that JB a Muluba was responsible for the separation of Wenge 4*4, also that Bill Clinton betrayed Werrason. I have seen jokes like only Tshiluba people are happy with Felix as new president. And it seems to me that these jokes hides a deeply entrenched hatrade based on tribe.

I stand to be corrected.

It's because of Mobutu. He created some stereotypes when Cardinal Malula started to fight his regime and later Etienne Tshisekedi, in order that people in Zaire would have some hate and that worked in the Katanga in 1991. Mobutu took that tactic from Belgians who did that earlier in the Lulua-region & Katanga back in the late 50s, with all Congolese people thinking that all Baluba are arrogant and tribalist while you have alot tribes who are more tribalistic then baluba and some who are very very arrogant. Mobutu did the same thing with Bakongo in 1965 by creating some stereotypes.

Tribal issue's weren't really strong anymore after 1965, because of Mobutu forbidden tribal-associations,etc. He wanted to a nationalistic nation and it worked with people of different tribes marrying each other. But the problem was that he was giving people coming from Equateur alot of favor, especially those of his own tribe (Ngbandi) and he was humilating Bakongo people, Luba people and those coming from Katanga which them having some grudge against him. Tribalism made a big comback when Joseph Kabila was looking a way to make his power stronger by creating divisions. In Kinshasa it became very hard to get a job, because alot of bossess only wanted people who talk Shwahili in their office or people who came from Eastern Congo.

The brother of my grandpa died when they sent him back to Kasai. He was a big boss there in Lubumbashi and lost everything. He had then to live in tents with other people.

My oncle said that Lulua aren't Baluba but people coming from Bandundu who migrated to the east with them meeting the Baluba, assimilating to their culture and then also adopting their names (Kayembe, etc.). Like the way tribes in Bandundu (Kwango & Kwilu) did when they became part of the Lunda Empire after being dominated centuries long by the Kongo-culture and manyeven being descendants of the Kongo-tribe. But it can also be that he has some anger towards the Lulua people, because he used to fight against them in Kinshasa. Saying that he had to put powder on his body so that a machette couldn't hit his body if he would be attacked by the Lulua-epople.

I also forget to add that Songye-people are also part of the big Luba-community.

To add a lil bit to what mvulusi said...I’ve met more arrogant tribe, sum of them never even heard of. Tho I’m Muluba there are few things we do in general tha can be annoying AF. I came to understand few things and where tha might come from. Like I previously said the Majority of them migrated to other states. The Kasai they left was, to be honest, a village . The few nice house and neighborhood there were for whites only. In fact the Belgium never planned on building an actual City like they done in Kinshasa,Lubumbashi,Kisangani and even Kananga...so now they migrate into these new cities, new lives and get that label of Mbokatier(Villager) Mopaya(foreigners) tho it can be a joke but in some ways true! So now when they,baluba, make it they have to show it off and stick it to your face and that’s where the arrogance mainly comes from

I, for example, had a grandfather( father’s maternal Uncle) who was well off in Lubumbashi from 70’s to early 90’s bfore the trouble with Kyiungu and Nguz. The level of arrogance and show off ????????‍♂️????????‍♂️! He was smthing else! Same with his brothers in Kinshasa, and  a cousin of my dad who was an Attorney in Bukavu! Love my people but sometimes we go above and beyond hahaha

Btw the Belgians started planning to let Kananga (Luluabourg) become the new capital of Belgium Congo, but the riots of 4 january 1959 made DR Congo already get the independence in 1960 with the project of Kananga being forgotten.

Baluba are part of the lost tribes of Israel. Our customs and ways of being are so peculiar.
