By far its Etat Major from Extra Musica. That song is well known throughout all of Africa and abroad when it comes to Congolese music and will make anyone get on a dance floor. In my opinion (speaking from the US), that song is the best Soukous/Ndombolo/Generique period.
Ive always wondered who he was myself. His format seems to be alot like the Dany Engobo style of music with the heavy ndombolo style. Thats what originally got me hooked to the music.
This is why they have always been my favorite! I never could understand how people would say they wounded or tried to copy Wenge...their sound is pretty different if not one of the most distinctive in Ndombolo/Sebens
You have posted several songs by Roga Roga then you add just one by Wenge BCBG and Makaba wasn't the soloist on it. When Makaba ruled, the likes of Roga Roga were not on the scene, they came later infact Roga Roga modelled himself around Makaba's style and even picked the same make,model and colour of guitar that Makaba used and still uses so that should tell you a lot. Both guitarists are excellent soloists and it's hard to tell the difference between the two. There is a reason why every soloist today says Makaba is their idol and inspiration.
Though it may be a matter of personal opinion, I have to disagree with then when you say that it is hard to tell the difference between the two. They may share the same style of guitar but many other solist have used that same model besides roga roga including diblo dibala, mboka liya, caien madoka and others but Id argue that none of them have similar styles of playing. Makaba changed the game with his play and is a very skilled musician. That is why he is idolized in my opinion.
Ive kindof stated something similar in the past. The problem that Roga Roga/Extra Musica has is that every sebene/generique they make sounds like a continuation of the last from Etat Major in 1998 to today with his latest release a few months ago. I honestly beleieve as a whole when it comes to the sebene, Extra was always better. When Roga roga plays, its always something simple yet catchy. Makaba's stuff is more technical and takes more skill to play and he makes it look easy. He is easily top 5 in terms of skill level in COngolese music. Makaba is by far the better of the two in everyway except creating that catchy simple loop.
Gode Lofombo: In a class of his own. Very distinctive style of playing and a trendsetter. Espe Bass: Another one with a distinctive style of play, though it has become repetitive like the Extra Musica. Binda Bass/Rocky B: Latin Quarter bassist played a very important role in many of the hit songs of old. Ngouma Lokito: That speed especially in the days of the Parisian styled soukous
Yea, there are a few areas where soukous is pretty popular. They have a style of music called Champeta that borrows heavily from it. If Im not mistaken, Dally Kimoko and Diblo Dibala have played there a few times.
At the end of the day most guitars $300+ sound relatively the same. There are some variances between them but with the effects that can be added, most people cant tell the difference in sound from one to another. I have owned a Mexican made Fender Strat and the more expensive counterpart of the American series...I preferred the sound of the Mexican version. What is probably more important is the feel of the guitar to the player. As far as the steinbergers are concerend, I also own one of those...by far my favorite. The only thing is they dont make them in that style anymore so your best bet is to go to ebay to buy one. If its the exact same type as Makaba, you will pay $1300+ USD. You can also find the cheaper similar looking ones (Steinberger Spirit) they go for $350+ USD. I have one of those too and they play pretty well too.
I have to say that when it comes to delivering quality music at a live performance I have yet to see anyone do it at a level like Victoria Eleison. The 2008 Olympia concert was flawless from the sound quality to the arrangement of the concert and stage presence. RIP King Kester
As everyone said before, Flamme kapaya is the better of the two. Kimbangu is very good but his style and skill level came from the Kapaya/Japonais school. Flamme is much more innovative in what he does now and continues to do. Flamme's body of work is much more memorable too. If you were making a group who do you think would be a better asset?
I like the song/album too but much like what has already been said on this forum, the songs sound too similar. If you listen to the main compilation song of Kindoki, you can literally add it to Contentieux and it will sound like one big song. Dont get me wrong, I thing that RogaRoga/Extra Musica's Generiques/Ndombolos have nearly mastered the heavy sound but its just the same thing too often.
