It stopped because of financial difficulties.

In 2003, 70% of their sponsor decided to not extend their contracts for the edition of the same year. Which made alot of artists not showing up and boycotting the editions of 2003, 2004 & 2005. In 2006 they wanted to make a new edition, but Adjovi had to much debts to South Africa which made that edition being cancelled. They tried to come with an edition in 2007, but it go postponed to 2008 with a new location (Lagos). Then the former  president of Burkina Faso (Blaise Compaoré), bought the event for the edition 2010, but the Kora Awards wasn’t the same anymore. After that one edition took place in Ivory Coast in 2012, which also the last one. Adjovi tried in 2014 to bring the Kora Awards to Angola (coming with preliminary round and giving those who won a diploma at home,Cindy received one), but it didn’t. In 2015 & 2016, Adjovi tried to negotiate with the government of Namibia, but that didn’t also work.

The MTV Mama Africa Awards took it over as most pregious awards of Africa, like the way the Kora Awards did it from edition 1999 to the AfriCar Awards (1991-1998) of Consty Eka & Yves Zogbo Junior. With AfriCar taking it over of the old Marcas d’Or. But there is a big silence since 2016.

I remember Koffi was super proud of his 4 Koras basically putting them on every song of the upcoming album I think it was Affaire D'Etat. Everything was "1 Kora, 2 Kora, 3 Kora, 4 Kora" even in the presentatiom of the awards you can see that the song presented by Koffi (L'Autre Là) had referements to those Koras
