Beside of the succes Academia had in the Congolese community with their first album Sanction, did Sanction fulfill expectations of their recordlabel and did the album sell well in France? Because I don't remember them having a succes in the French showbizz, except their song Faux Patron which was a featering with Neg'Marrons and the generique Sanction being aired alot of the radio Africa N1 and television MCM Africa. Or was their contract with Academia, not let them succeed in France like the way Papa Wemba tried with Martin Meissonnier in the late 80s, but just Secteur A trying to look if the African market was lucrative like Southern America with Latin music ? Sad that Academia themselves messed the contract up.

Academia could have gone far, but they  themselves also didn't respect Secteur A on their side. Secteur A was preparing a professional tour in France for them, also Outre Mer (Guadeloupe, Martinique, Saint Martin, French Guyana, etc.), festivals and wanting to plan them to do the 1st part for artists of their label, to promote Sanction well. But they didn't want to wait a prefered to  sign contracts with Congolese concert-promoters and Hamed Bakayoko for concerts in Paris, Brussels, London, Kinshasa, Brazzaville, Pointe Noire, Abidjan and Ouagadougou. 

The reason why Rap artists always get scammed is because they're not serious and never look into their contracts properly. They only think of needing the money there and then but never think of the long term, and also sign their masters away hence why they run into problems in the future.
For example Dr Dre got scammed twice, first in NWA then when he left Suge Knight and Death Row he wasn't getting his royalties for his album the Chronic, same with Snoop Dogg and the Doggystyle.
Puff Daddy is a huge thief, he's screwed over almost everyone he's worked with, but likes to do the nice guy routine. He's had problems with almost all his artists and has been accused of being behind Biggie's murder because of how he's exploited him even after his death. I also  find it strange how everyone that leaves his label either go religious or end up dead or something strange happens to them.
That's one of the reasons why a lot of them go independent nowadays. Labels aren't as important anymore.

Sam and co didn't want to listen to Kenzy's advice of hiring session musicians and dancers for their concerts (Djudju-chet and co). In pop-music its always the recordlabel who pay and hires them in the case if more musicians are needed. But Sam and co didn't want that, they wanted to recruit musicians and dancers in Kinshasa, like big bands were doing and promote new talents,  forgetting that had to pay them with their own money. Since that the contract was just for two albums, both Academia and Secteur A went their own ways. Sam Tshintu decided to sign with Jimmy Mukelenge (who was their first manager when they just started Academia, before signing with Secteur A), but they ended up by signing with Rigo Makengo who produced their album 4 Coins Kandala. It's only when Sam Tshintu was stuck in Europe because of the ngulu-affair that he started to regret. He then tried to make a comeback with Sexy Chocolat and wanting to enter new horizons, but it wasn't a succes and not long after it Academia disbanded when Modogo and Mboshi decided to return Quartier Latin (Academia in Kinshasa was already dead  because all musicians joined other bands in 2003).

Years later Sam Tshintu and Modogo had an idea to record a duo-album. Then Sam met his friend Alain Mabanckou who is a known writer in France, they agreed to record an album about his book and he arranged a contract for Sam & Modogo with big recordlabel Lusafrica which has a distribution deal with Sony BMG. Sam Tshintu was really exicited because he was dreaming since 2003 about a worldmusic-career, being fed up with Kinshasa and the way he was treated in 2009. Sam, Modogo and Alain started to promote the album on French magazines, tv and radiochannels (France 24, TV5, Africa N1, etc.). They even performed at the big French retail chain FNAC when their album came out. They associated CNN, Beniko Popolipo and Do Akongo to the project. After that they performed at the mythic New Morning and started to have a tour in France, going even to Ile de Reunion, without getting attacked by combattans. But Sam Tshintu started to get mad, because all the credits went to Alain Mabanckou, them not getting invited in the media and they didn't appear on the album cover. So after a year, Sam decided to leave. Modogo then stayed alone and was joined by singer Ballou Canta who replaced Sam Tshintu and Roi David replacing CNN. The succes made Alain Mabanckou want them to record a second album, which they and made again a long tour in France, performing also at festivals in Germany and Holland. Then in 2014 they disbanded.




Bouro Mpela left because he was fed up of Sam Tshintu's behaviour when they were Kinshasa and also against Modogo, Mboshi, Lebou who were doing nothing to stop him. They were living in hypocrisy, saying yes in Sam Tshintu's face, but disagree behind his back. Before going to Kinshasa they agreed about multiple stuff, but most didn't get the respected the moment they were in Kinshasa. The succes went to their head and it was worser, because in Kinshasa they started to get "ba bureau" who were putting "songi-songi". They had a concert at Intercontinental and Bouro Mpela decided to show up very late, to show Sam a point that he wasn't his boss and Sam being angry. Then when they went to Brazzaville, Sam take revenge by cutting the music, when Bouro was about to do a solo dance. Bouro was so furious that he left the music-hall and the concert not being able to continue, because they were just 3 singers. Then you had also he problem of Bouro being against Somono and Sam recruiting reserve-singers and guitarists (Pitshou Concorde, Tonton Lay, Eric Menthe and co), but him being seen as a hater by the rest of the band. Then when they arrived in Paris, the conflicts went to another level and Sam Tshintu and co already hitting that they would do a 12 on by, by recruiting soon a tenorist (I think that they recruited at that point Abilissi of Extra Musica). After performing in Lille, Bouro had enough and decided to leave, to avoid the tensions getting on another level. Wanted to take a break and think about which band to join (Nouvelle Ecriture, Wenge BCBG, Wenge Maison Mere and Quartier Latin). But his father already contacted Koffi Olomide and he was then surprised to see Koffi at their house in Antwerp drinking champagne with his father. Koffi promised him a car, some money and celebrated the death of Academia, Bouro saying nothing and just accepting the offer. He was presented at Bolistone, but only Champion, Felly, Binda Bass, Nseka, Mamale and Ridens Makosso were happy with his return. The rest (Fally and co) werent happy and gave him a cold look. Nevertheless they returned together to Kinshasa and the rest is history. Sam Tshintu on his side claimed that Bouro Mpela was corrupted by Koffi Olomide and attacked both guys very hard in the media, saying also that it was due to bad influences from other bandleaders that he left (his brother in law Papa Wemba).

If Bouro's father hadn't intervened, which band would he had continued with? Probably Papa Wemba, because both Wenge had a pretty strong line-up at the time. Also, Werra was still on good terms with Koffi so he would avoid recruiting him out of respect.

If Sam Tshintu had half of Koffi's professionalism, Academia could of went far! I had no idea the lengths Secteur A was willing to go to promote Sanction, what would make Sam think he knows the music business better than them?

Also, Abilissi of made such a dumb mistake by not sticking with Academia. Maybe he saw the band wasn't serious, because I heard he tried to rejoin Extra Musica. If I'm not mistaken, you said they mocked him during the sebene of Karen Amour @ 6min

It's not a dumb mistake, maybe that he wasn't treated well by his collegues. There 4 singers in the tenor-section, Eric Menthe, Tonton Lay, Mustapha Nkori and Abilisi himself. Having just 5 mics for 9 singers. If you aren't the main star of a band, you need to be mentally strong and the competition is very harsh with alot happening behind the scenes.
