Title: HERE IS EVERYTHING YOU'D WANT TO KNOW REGARDING KOFFI OLOMIDE'S V12 (1995)
Post by: Matebu on April 09, 2018, 04:37
Critically acclaimed as Koff's best album ever.

After all these years, I never noted that Nyboma participated in the chorus. That’s probably an additional reason the chrous on that album was the best ever for Quartier Latin. I consider him the best deuxieme voix the genre will ever have.

@Matebu

Thank you for sharing the liner notes and credits, this is definately among Koffi's best albums!

I had no idea Djudju Chet played drums on this album! Was Champion not yet recruited into QL or was he unable to obtain papers to record the album in Europe?

Even though things worked out with Somono and Mboshi, it was sad to see Beevans work with the group conclude here. He always had presence, though his cadence was a bit too similar to Robert Ekokota of Wenge Musica.

I wouldn't of been surprised if Koffi got negative feedback for that or whether it factored in those recruitments later on.

What is your favorite rhumba and sebene from this album?

Matebu:

Now You are talking!!

The QL Lineup of Vocalists in this album, will never be surpassed in my opinion. Koffi got the mix of vocalists absolutely tuned for the songs. The guitarists are legendary and the arrangement is top-notch.

In my Opinion this was the height of Koffi as a musician and he defined the era at this point in time.

Classic Tcha-Tcho...

Champion came in 1996.

I noticed that Coco Tchomba never played on Koffi's solo albums at the moment he was in Quartier Latin (Noblesse Oblige & V12). Kaps Kapangala who was not really a amazing drummer was far better than him. Watching those concerts of 1991-1996 you will see that he was very limited as drummer and it became more clear when Champion came. You could feel the huge difference during the concerts when the two guys were sharing the drums. I think that Champion's drumming style made Koffi call him "Esthetique".

My favorite rumba is Aspirine followed by Fouta Djallon. I also like the diss songs Andrada & Nouveau Testament. I wonder what Papa Wemba was thinking when he heard Andrada. But i prefer Malanda Ngombe as diss-song. All sebenes are excellent. I really like the way Blanchard Miantezolo played bass on the album. Who played lead on Andrada ? Felly Tyson or Beniko Popolipo ? Because Felly Tyson never played the distortion in concerts. Which made me think if it was really him who played lead in that song. Zokere & Bambino were also good rumba's. Those songs are so underrated.

Best koffi’s album and one of the best in our music. Despite the fact that Koffi dont have a great voice, in this album his voice was very enjoyable, the arrangement was great. Koffi made this album with a lot of love, the backing vocals are incredible, we have the voice of Nyboma, Eric Tutsi and Babia together. Personally I don't know if there is another 90’s album  arriving at the height of V12.

By the way, its me who took the booklet on Discogs with Stephie, pas de faux pas, noblesse oblige, magie, v12 and other, if someone want the booklet in large format i can send him !

I think that is Beniko who played the distortion but i’m not sure. Why Sam Tshintu dont sang in V12 ? The era where Koffi traveling with only 4 singers in Europe had already started at this time?

I always under impression that Koffi at the time dedicated distortion to Lebou & Beniko. And that Beniko played solo and distortion on Andrada, while Koffi took the role of rythm, with Lebou on Mi-solo.

Yea, Koffi never had confidence in Coco Tchomba - too one-dimensional. I also don't understand why Kaps Kapangala didn't get more time; he faired better becoming a session drummer. Djuju Music was the best session drummer so he was very reliable.

My favorites are Fouta Djallon, Asprine, & Bambino, but I really loved Etat Civil. Of all the Koffi songs I've played a lot, Etat Civil is probably the one I repeated the most.

I know there are songs that did not make the cut due to time constraints, I wonder if Koffi has those recordings for himself still. Also, he used to make multiple instrumental variations of his songs, so he might have different versions of Fouta Djallon, Park ya Baba, Bambino, & Chantou.

Merci masta. I really appricate the online community we've established with educated contributers here, youtube (Pado Kwado, Ingénieur Lz Tumbula, Harris Diavua Salakiaku, Shaddy Raddy922, and many more), & Discogs (dicapipups, Kozak5, zedimaliga, etc) to preseve the greatness (and negatives) of the genre.

BTW, I uploaded the album booklet in order, but everytime I do this it always goes out of order when posted. If anyone has a solution to this it would be appreciated for future posts like this

They recorded this album in summer 95 right ? That's when Babia rejoined the group in Paris. Did Koffi & Quartier Latin play concerts in Europe in 1995 because I never saw of extract of concert following the release of Magie and before V12 (expect the Aquaboulevard concert on December 24th 1994) even the presentation of Magie at Intercontinental in 95 i would love too see thoses concerts. Beevans said 3 years ago that played a fara-fara concert with Wenge Musica LSC in 95 is it true ?

Ofcourse they played concerts in Europe. I remember that they played then at LSC. Those VHS are very rare. We need to thank LZ Ingenieur, Seben Total, Mengi Massamba (so sad that they deleted his channel) for uploading many video's who were lost. I don't know about a Fara-Fara concert with Wenge in '95. That's the thing that I liked about that era before 1997. Bands or artist who don't like each or beefing with each other having a concert at te same stage. Fally & Ferre would have a lot of money by  doing that in 2007 Or 2010 at Palais des Sports, Zenith, Bataclan or Palais du Peuple, but they are they are "kidiba".

I knew I wasn't the only one who thought thay way about Beevans, kiekiekie! At least in Magie, his cries (regardless of similar vocal cadence to Ekokota) was at least lyrically unique from the Wenge counter part. He always gets me grooving with that "Kangi Nzela" animation!

Throughout V12, I felt that his animation borrowed heavily from Pentagone and Pile Ou Face. Even the opening track for the album, Beevans doesn't appear until the last third of the song. Perhaps his cries were too close to the competitions for Koffi's liking which had him phased out.

No you are not the only one. Alot of people were accussing Koffi of plagiat, because of Beevans. He was forced to held a press-conference about that and the problem with Scola Miel. There was a VHS about that press-conference about it, but that video is very rare. Those VHS are along with Koffi Olomide/Papa Wemba "Qui dit Vraie' / (after Olympia), Le Mea Culpa de Koffi Olomide (1999), the one he made before bercy which was with rouph mbuta nganga about his roots & early career and Nganda Ya ba Nganga of 1996with Bolowa Bonzakwa when he won some trophies at the Africar-awards are those rare videos i'm looking for. I was a millionaires would put my money in finding those videos.

Btw Nganda ya ba Nganga is nothing compared to that of Bolowa. The last two female journalists don't know anything about the artists they are inviting. I watched Manda Chante's interview yesterday, but auwhn. That girl asked Manda about the split of Wenge, while he wasn't there since 5 years and it smeems that she didn't know that he was a member of Wenge EL Paris. While that moment was the highlight of his career. The same thing with the interviews of Kija Brown, Adolphe Dominguez, Nyoka Longo & Tcha Tcho Mbala. I don't know where the Congolese press the going. Congo ebebi dans tout les domaines.

Looks like Koffi recuited alot musicians in the image of Clan Wenge.

Beevans/Robert Ekokota
Mboshi Bola/Tutu Calugi
Champion Djikapela/Titina Al Capone
Kerozene/Bill Clinton Kalonji
Cambodge/Papy Kakol

It would have intressting to hear Bill Clinton Kalonji in Abacadabra. But his atalaku's refused his participation.

Matebu you should download CamScanner the application for phones. It lets you take pictures and then it can convert them in ADP or regular Jpeg. Let me know if you need assistance, I been uploading all my work paperwork with it for two years it saved me from having to stop at the library to literally scan what I wanna send away. You can use it for pictures as well and the quality is pretty good.

@mvulusi96

That's a great observation you made about Koffi's modeling his band after Wenge! Although it could be said that Quarter Latin had a better drummer than Wenge Musica, specifically Masion Mere and Tonya Tonya.

Papy Kakol is a legend with the snare drum rolls, but compared to his contemporaries he is somewhat limited in his dynamics as a player...at least in the beginning of his run with Wenge. Which could explain Dju Dju Chet involvement in Solola Bien and Kibusia Mpimpa.

Coco Tchomba never stood a chance! From all the concerts I've seen of him, he's decent behind the drum kit but not superstar material. Tshé-Tshé De Balle was a solid drummer, I don't know why he didn't remain with the group. He would of likely replaced Champion.

Academia recuited Tshe Tshe le Balle as drummer when they came in Kinshasa, after that Koffi left him behind in Kinshasa. He rejoined Quartier Latin in 2003. But had Cambodge & Titina before him. Them when he became the 1ste drummer of the band he was never getting the chance to travel to in Europe. Koffi was always calling Champion if he wanted to perform in Europe I don't understand why.

Champion Djikapela is an excellent drummer, but Titina Al Capone is a little bit better than him. Kin E Bouge & Zenith 1999 says everthyhing. Champion's drumming style and "ba passage" he was using were created by Titina back in 1991.

I don't know if you know Kompressor of Wenge Tonya Tonya he was also an execellent drunmer M. Listen to the Mouna-album and Fara Fara of 2002. Affaire Tonya Tonya, which was recorded in Kinshasa makes himsound limited, while he wasn't. All albums  recorded in Kinshasa before 2003 in studio Ndiaye or Meko never shows how good the drummers were. Deo Sfe (R.I.P.) for example who was one of the two best drummers in Kinshasa had the same thing in A La Une. People were lucking to hear/watch his drumming skills in Somo Trop, Stade des Martyrs 2002, Bercy, Olympia & Zenith 2000.

Did Tshe Tshe le Balle play drums on Viagra for Quarter Latin Academia? What was the deal with having Kaps Kapangala as drummer when the band form if he only played drums on Da Silva? Why did Dju Dju Chet play the majority of the album if the group already had a drummer? I'm assuming Kaps joined them to late in the recording.

Yeah he played on Viagra. They mentoined him many times in that album. Kaps didn't join to late. It's just that Djudju-shet is a excellent drummer. They had alot of respect for Kaps, since that he was a member of Quartier Latin in the past, so let him play a song otherwise he wouldn't play a song. If you look the concerts they made before going to Kinshasa you will see Djudju play almost the whole concert and Kaps just one or 2 songs.

Yes tshe tshe de balle was the drummer in viagra. + fun facts : tshe tshe was one of the male dancer in v12 video clips, he would later learn drum by himself (i think everybody know this lol)

@mvulusi96 @Wenge1995 guy i'm fully agree with you, moreover Koffi has revealed himself in an interview with Tshiluizi that he was a big fan of Ekokota. Between the 90's and 00's, Koffi wanted to reproduce the animation style of Wenge 4x4 with Ekokota and then of Maison Mere with Kerozene and Brigade to imitate Bill Clinton and Celeo Scram

Koffi could have made V12 a bit more danceable if he wanted to, but Magie was already enough, I think Koffi wanted V12 to be as serious as possible and look ... today it's considered the Koffi's most beautiful album with unmatched songs like "Fouta Djallon", "Aspirine" .... Koffi is first of all a rumba artist, that is to say favoring the lyrics and the composition. He also knows how to make us dance and it's thanks to Wenge 4x4 that Koffi survived on the side of generics / sebene

Yes he combined, and in my personal opinion his sound was better. Wenge had the blueprint, but melodically I never really liked their regular songs that werent sebenes, just a few rumbas. Koffi on the other hand was wayyyy ahead of JB in the rumba department in my opinion and his instrumentalisation was better to me as far as sebenes went. Dont know what the atalakus actually say so I cant jusge on that, but as far as the sound I think Koffi sonically had Wenge beat since Pas de Faux Pas

Don't compare JB Mpiana to Koffi with making rumba's songs. Koffi was already making classic rumba's back in 1985 at that moment nobody knew what Wenge Musica was. JB M'piana first and only slow song in Wenge 4x4 was Mon Ami Coboss ('93), but that was sung along with the other guys JB Mpiana started to concentratre on rumba's from his first solo album Feux de L'Amour. At that moment Koffi Olomide was already 20 years in the game.

Most members of Quartier Latin came from Flash Musica (Rockly Blanchard, Lebou Kabuya, Sam Tshintu, Suzuki, Modogo & Willy Bula). Flash Music were like Lavignora Esthetique, Attraction Babylone, Yoka Choc, Lemba Musica, etc. rivals/concurrents of Wenge Musica. Koffi Olomide discovered them in 1990, during the mouring day of the mi-solo guitarist Blaise Kombo (who played for Wenge). After they performed he recuited Rocky Blanchard and later Suzuki and slowly all the keymember until 1994 with Sam Tshintu as last keymember, who was the bandleader of Flash Musica. Pas de Faux Pas hasn't really the style of Wenge Musica 4x4, they were playing the way the most youngster bands of the late '80s/early 90's were playing. From Noblesse Oblige they atarted to adopt that Wenge-style (animation & sebens). From Ultimatum they started to have their own style. I think that it would be more intressting if Koffi recruited a calugist for V12. Because the animation Beevans did were animations Calugi was doing in concerts for Wenge 4x4 along with the Mandundu-animation of Shora Mbemba. Tutu Calugi was already making furore back in 1994 with his new animations, which he used in Pentagone. Koffi was pissing Wenge 4x4/Clan Wenge alot of times off by using their animations earlier then them. With people in the diaspora and Africa thinking that Quartier Latin made those cries and dances. That's why people in Kinshasa didn't really respect Koffi back in the days, because they saw him as a copy cat . A guy who copies Wenge to survive in the music-scene,while guys of his generation started to dissapear.

The crazy thing is that nobody was talking that way about Defao, when he started to have succes in the mid-1990. With Theo Mbala using Calugi's cries.

I understand what you’re saying but  for some reason Koffi 1992-1996 sonically sounds better to my ears than Kalayi Boing, Pleins Feux and I might even add Pentagone in there. A lot of wenge 4x4 songs sound like Pop songs/world music until the sebene part. I wonder if thats Makaba’s fault because i believe he was artistic director of the group or if JB kinda liked those Pop portion of the songs. Because after the split it was barely anymore of that sound, maybe because times had changes but then again maybe Werrason and Adolphe were more purists.

You're right, Koffi always wins over Wenge when it comes to rhumbas! That area of music is his strongest suit. Although, the lead singers from Wenge did have their fair share of solid rhumbas; Verset Oublier, Omba, J'suis La, among others...

The music scene was changing going into the 90s, albums were comprised of a generique, rhumbas, and sebene based songs. Koffi was smart enough to sense the direction of music and adapt to it, while maintaining the style which long earned him respect. In the beginning, he made some errors trying to find the music formula that worked but he managed and the rest is history

The big asterisk with that is that the biggest rhumbas hits Adolphe, Werra, & JB had were written/consulted by other people. Particularly the great composer, Pascal Poba.

Voyage, Blandine, Feux de l'amour, Chantal Switzerland, Omba you name it...

When you get a chance, listen to Pascal's album, then listen to Toujour Humble's rhumbas. The similarities in composition structure and arrangement is striking.

What about King Kester, Defao, or Roga Roga (of Extra Musica); did they compose their own songs or consult ghostwriters?

Yes, that is very true, along with King Kester. Hence why they liked doing remixes of their past songs. I heard from a from a friend that Defao can write a new song a day if he wanted, which is incredibly impressive. Most of the 5 gen. don’t really know to compose, even the biggest ones.

Simaro praised Koffi as one of the greatest composer/singers, but as he became really established he’s became very open to having paroliers (work on the non-main rhumbas of albums), and that’s when he emphasis on Tcha Tcho went away. Early on, it was Josky, then Do Akongo providing consultation services. Then of course Wazekwa in 91-93. But for V12, he took upon himself to really create his best tcha tcho rhumbas.

Karmapa, Benz Boziana, & Wazekwa are also seriously good composers still active.

King Kester Emeneya used ghostwriters, but they were "mpangi" and had alot of respect for him so they came never out. Willo Mondo was a written by Colombani Wasenga (the guy who wrote Wake Up & Litio Ya Calendrier). Defao also sometimes use ghostwriters, but the guys of their generations don't come out because of the respect they have for "vieux na bango ya secteur", having gave them alot of cloths and sometimes a shot-out. Bourman Idolo also gave his pure vieux some songs. Guys like Wazekwa & Pascal Poba went to break that thing, by saying in public that they wrote this, this and this. With goshtwriters not more accepting cloths and wanting to get money and increase the prise of their songs more and more with the artists going to songwriters of lower class. With guys who wanted were dreaming of a solo carreer selling songs to artists and immediately coming out and announcing the record of their solo album, who never came out on most the most cases.

Koffi Olomide was hating ghostwriters. He was scared to that someone would come up and said that he made his carreer, etc. Since that he was Wemba's songwriter in the past. His first song he used from somebody else was Dieu Voit Tout, which was written by Reddy Amisi and already sung in concerts. But Reddy Amisi don't like to say that in public (he wrote also some songs for Papa Wemba). Then from 1989 gave Do Akongo the opportunity to put a song on his solo album and it was credited to Do Akongo's name (Coucou). Then in 1990 He did the same thing with Toussaint, Rigo Star & Do Akongo on Les Prissoniers Dorment. From Koweit Rive Gauche he finally accepted to work with ghostwriters and credit their songs on his name (Wazekwa, Do Akongo, the other I forgot his name), but he was then mixing their work with his writing skills. That made lose that élégance he once had. Having classics like V.I.P., Mbabula, Zero Faute, Henriquet, Elle et Moi, Claudia Likulia, Stephie, Rue d'Amour, Diva, Lady Bo, l'Homme de La Rue, Orphelinat, Djino, etc. on his name. V12 brought that back for a moment. With Monde Arabe he wanted to make a comeback, but it was not the same Koffi like the 80's. But the album had still classics.

Thye reason why Koffi holds V12 so dearly is because it all him composing and artistic direction. Before each rhumba he promotes Tcha Tcho "Jackpot c'est Tcha Tcho" etc.

He and Wazekwa already fell out due to his heavy contribution to Wemba's Foridoles & Pole Position. By mid-1995 Wazekwa was already solo (encourage by Wemba) and released his first album "Tetragramme" with vocal help from Wemba, who was in polemic with Koffi (late 1993-96). And of course. Wazekwa was forbidden to help in any way in the "Wake Up" project as part of their temp cease fire.

Yeah, i believe it started after Koffi went to his anniversary party in '93 below and really stole the show with how much the ladies loved him. At the end it plays solo guitar, which shocked the crowd not knowing his skill. The exact circumstances of how the beef started were never really made clear to me I heard different things over the years
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QjPeQ2v-rog

The thing about Wemba was that he'd put people on (help them get their start), but once he sensed they were getting a decent/high level of fame he'd get jealous and turn on them (sometimes doing drastic things to strike back). Happened to Kester, Reddy, Stino, Koffi, etc. With Kester it was seriously bad how relations broke

@Matebu

There really isn't much Koffi could of done otherwise, because making a name for himself required him to break one of the 48 Laws of Power: "never outshine the master".

The basis of Papa Wemba's polemic with Koffi seems rooted in this concept – Wemba's fear and insecurity of Olomide's growing popularity outside of Wemba's influence.

I'm not saying Koffi shouldn't of aggressively pursued a solo career, but he could of done more behind the scenes to make Wemba appear more brilliant than he is, maybe he could of reached the heights of power without the nasty polemic that followed.

Then again, some would argue that intense feuds between artists yields the best music since both sides are trying to solidify themselves as the leader of the music culture.

What do you guys think?

Yeah. Papa Wemba was a little bit jealous the way Koffi started to become a big star Africa. With Papa Wemba attacking him in the song La Reference "na libota papa azalaki se moko", "their is only father in the family", since that Koffi Olomide took the nicknames Papa Plus, Papa Bonheur, Papa Fleur, Papa Top, etc. With then the both artists throwing shots together in interviews and Koffi Olomide starting ignoring Papa Wemba if he was talking the way he started his career. It have been said that the thing which made him furious was when he heard that Papa Wemba slept with Kamono. So from then he wrote the song Andrada, where he attacked Papa Wemba very hard.

About the conflict Koffi Olomide and Wazekwa. It started when he heard that Wemba shout him out in the song 10eme Commandement. He understood then that Wazekwa gave him songs in the Foridoles-album. You know before 1994 Papa Wemba was very weak with Koffi & Wenge dominating the music-scene, fans being disspointed the way he was to focused on his world-music, the way his musicians started to release solo albums and having more succes then him and started to disrespect hi and the split of Viva La Musica in 1992 which maked him more weaker. So because of that he wanted to make a comeback with Foridoles. But since that he isn't strong songriter he asked people of his staff they look for songwriters. Felix Wazekwa who started to build a reputation as a ghostwriter was then contacted by Jules Masuwa. Wazekwa wrote then the songs 10eme Commandement, Nzete ya Seqouia, Moyi & La Reference. The album was a huge succes and brought Papa Wemba back on the top which didn't please his rivals Koffi Olomide & Emeneya and his own musicians. Koffi Olomide understood that Wazekwa gave Papa Wemba songs when he heard Papa Wemba giving him a shout out in the song 10eme Commandement. "Nako benga Felix Wazekwa Prix Nobel ya ba soucis". Which made him furious and he then called Wazekwa. In that phone he asked Wazekwa which song he gave to Wemba with Wazekwa saying it. And then Koffi replying "noooo you messed the songs up. That guy doesn't have a voice. I'm the man who let the girls go crazy with my songs, don't you see how they messed Reference up, doesn't give those elders guys songs because they are ungrateful, etc., etc. From that day the problems started. hahahahaha

Indianga Mayel 'aka Toussaint Vice' was a guitarist in Quartier Latin. Koffi liked him, Djunafa who was one of the singers and Do Akongo alot. So he gave Toussaint and Do Akongo the opportunity to put a song in his album also for Rigo Star who contributed alot in his solo career from his frist album Ngounda until Les Prissoniers Dorment. Rigo Star, Do Akongo & Toussaint are the writers. Toussaint didn't like Do Akongo participate in the recordings of the album. Sonodisc made a mistake by putting them as composer and Koffi as songwriter, while it had to be the opposite. Back in the days he was very grateful. Rigo Star and Manu Lima didn't participate on Koweit Rive Gauche, but Koffi Olomide thanked in booklet of Koweit Rive Gauche along with Do Akongo and Wazekwa. Than he changed after Noblesse Oblige with him beefing with everybody.

From that day the problems started. hahahahaha

Wemba really slept with Kamono ??? No that was a rumor. I'm surprised that it was enough for him to write a whole diss song.

Then you don't know Congolese artists well. They can start beef for the most little things. It's not a secret but alot Congolese leaders see their female dancers as their girls. Tabu Ley made many of his girldancers pregnant and sung songs about them.

I know congolese musicians mess around with dancers and made them pregnant but i was wondering if that Wemba/Kamono was real or just rumor.

In the context of being at the top of competition, Koffi Olomide's response with Andrada was approprite. I believe that Koffi is a firm follower of some various of the 48 Laws, since he went with law 6: "Court attention at all cost".

Putting himself out there with songs that allude to rumors of Wemba's affaire with Rosette Kamono (among other things), brought gossip and fan interest to Koffi. This generated sales and popularity.

Going into the late 90s, it was time for Koffi to eliminate any competition both in Europe and in Africa. At that time, Zaiko's popularity was slowly going due to their recent records not connecting with the masses and a lack of touring in Europe, however they were still making noise.

Not to mention that Papa Wemba was not too far behind Koffi, making his comeback and attacking him through "mutu-nguba" animation.

Hence law 15: "Crush your enemy totally". First came Rond Point, a taunt of good measure for Zaiko and then the album Attentat which effectively dealt with Papa Wemba. Around the time of Bercy of 2000, word of peace talks betweem Wemba and Koffi started and his attention then shifted towards the next big rival...J.B. Mpiana & Wenge BCBG!

Although, I do wonder if Wemba ever really forgave Koffi for Attentat...some of those taunts were very harsh! Especially Babia's part in the song Nul n’est Parfait, I don't know if I could ever be cool with someone who airs out dirt within the family for public entertainment and gossip.

Yes, it made him sad. Saying in a interview that if his mother was still in life that she would let reconcile them. Then Koffi mocked him saying that how is it possible that a old man ike him could still cryabout his mother who died a longtime ago. Papa Wemba was really hurted the way he was beefing with Emeneya & Koffi. So he made a vocal about that in the song Okomi, from the Mwalimu-album. Saying that they are jealous because he his a handsome guy, they hadn't succes, tjat they are beefing for nothing just because of girls and money. Btw Mwalimu album was recorded in Kinshasa, way before they perfored at Zenith & Olympia. When Wemba perform at Olympia with Nouvelle Ecriture they mocked the late Didi (Koffi brother) in his Olympia, which made Koffi furious. Saying that they don't have the right to mock dead people. Then after the release of Force de Frappe & Mwalimu it became silent between the two guys. Then 2 or 3 months before Wemba's Bercy they reconciled. But there were rumors that Koffi was working on sabotating Wemba's Bercy. But despite that Wemba was praising Koffi alot in interviews that he's a educated guy,etc.. But when Koffi won the 4 kora's during the kora awards he was a little bit jealous and said that it was a fraud, etc. With Koffi's camp mocking him and the Congolese press labeling him as a jealous man who don't want to see his collegues progessing in their work. But it was nothing in Koffi's eyes. They meeted eachother and planned a concert at Zenith together for Wake Up. With Papa Wemba visiting him during a concert somewhere in Germany or Belgium with the former Fioti Fioti dancers who stayed in Europe. But something went wrong with the concert getting cancelled, then Wemba's camp started attacking him. Not long after that Wemba got arrested ofr the ngulu-affaire, but Koffi still performed at Zenith, where he gave his goodbye-concert. This all made Wemba's fans angry, saying that he couldn't do that to his former mentor. It caused even fights in Chateaux Rouge between Koffi and Wemba fans. After that Wemba came out from prison and he revealed that Koffi was the only Congolese bandleader who wrote a letter to him, when he was in prison. Then they become very close during the Maisha Parc-era until that Koffi sued him in 2009 with things getting worser and more worser when Koffi stole Wemba's sidekick. With Wemba not inviting Koffi for his wedding and attacking him in the generic of Matire d'Ecole (Araignee). Saying "Felix Wazekwa, Meje 30 les linges salle se lave en famille, mais qui le salit toujours ? " with Koffi then recording a diss against Wemba for 13eme Apotre, but never came out. Because that his friends said not to do that. With Wemba attacking Koffi in every interview until his death and saying that he could never forgive him, etc. That he is a real 'yankee'm because that he smocked weed when he was young, while some started to drinka whole bottle wiskey when they were already aged and thinking that it makes them gangster, etc. Then Koffi tried to reconcile him with the help of Vicent Gomez, but it didn't work. With Wemba being furious and attacking him the next day in a interview with Magalie Sisi, saying that he would never forgive him and that Koffi can't come to his funeral if he dies, etc. calming Werrason & JB down that he didn't betray them. In every interview he keep saying that Koffi shouldn't come if he died and not after that he passed away.

That dance was particularly harsh and pointed (embarrassing Koffi completely), so I think it was fair then becuase all things were on the table during that beef and Mbuakela era when nobody was chilling on either side. The Boulevard de Star episodes had QL & Ecrita memebers looking like they were ready to fist fight on sight. Both tarnished their reps among the conservative audience for a while as a result.

The success of Attentat & the Bercy hype effectively shutout the Fula-Ngenge album until Mwalimu was released when Koffi & QL were basically chilling (and slowly planning Force de Frappe) after their successful Europe tour/stay & all the money and gifts they got. Everyone in Quartier Latin were rolling around Kin in Benzes while Wemba had his reputation for barely ever paying people (always "forgetting" and giving fake sermons to change the subject  :D).

For me that's as humbling as it gets. In dire situations, very few people will really look out for you. All his donor friends also we nowhere to be seen during that ordeal, otherwise he would've avoided prison time instead of qiuckly going broke during legal proceedings.

Thank you guys, you all have provided so much information I had not known! We all can agree that Koffi made very strong power moves in the 90s, subsequently positioning him as among the biggest artist going into the 2000s and beyond. However, it all came at a great personal cost...

Once you involve people's family as a topic of polemic songs and interviews, the dynamic of music becomes very difficult to seperate competitive creativity from vicious slander. The only way in my opinion that Koffi could of genuinely mended their friendship is if he publically renounced Attentat and apologize on behalf of those associated with Wemba that would have been offended by the album's content.

However, it is not in Koffi's character to do such a thing, especially at that time. In my opinion, Koffi doesn't put too much trust in friends, especially those in the same industry since they are more prone to become envious (Kora situation with Wemba) or tyrannical (like Fally Ipupa, Ferre Gola, & JB Mpiana kiekiekie).

Touching briefly about Wemba's prison sentence and Koffi's letter, deep down I do believe that they truly cared for one another. However the business of the music industry makes familar faces become enemies and strangers friends, it's the nature of the business my friends...

Everyone is guilty and time heals that petty stuff, so didn't matter as much later on. Don't forget Koffi was also a victim of family attacks, particularly in the V12 era when Nyoka Longo loved that rumours were being spread that he was dating and sleeping with Koffi's mom. Crazy... And people were adding fuel to the fire saying he did it to get some of Koffi's "success formula" at his peak 90's popularity, since Zaiko was in clear decline, with Longo having kicked out the Zaiko orginals and being stuck in Kin mostly.

the most frustrating thing about this classic is that all of the tracks aren't on the vinyl issue does anybody know why ?

Maybe because of the length of the full album not fitting on the record

there's LP's that runs in the same minute as v12, and it still got all of the tracks on it even if that was the case they can just add another vinyl to even it out; The people at sonodisc were just lazy

Beniko played lead on Andrada!

I got the chance to meet Tyson in Aubervilliers back in 2020 and he said that he lead, Koffi rhythm (on the singing part), Beniko mi-solo the whole song and Lebou rhythm on the sebene-part.
