Title: INTERESTING INTERVIEW WITH FORMER WENGE BCBG SOLOIST PATHY MOLESO
Post by: archos on September 13, 2018, 11:48
https://youtu.be/ht8PguvcFiY

He said he joined wenge bcbg through boguys bompema who was from the same neighborhood and they were working together on his songs he'd give to other artists including jb  and jb asked bompema who is that guitarist playing on the pre-records he brings to him and then bompema introduced him and all the group welcomed him well and he had worked with some already like rio who was with him in madilu's group ,as soloists there was already ficarre and coco(plus in reserve patou solo, reagan and a few others who never made it)
ado says we saw that jb liked you a lot and was praising you in concerts and asked whether other guitarists were not jealous of him and he says i dont think so because jb was liking him the way he was with his strengths and weaknesses, just like he was liking ficarre or mbokaliya with their strengths their weaknesses their flaws as human beings...but jb is in a better position to say why people felt something special between them
and he says a true guitarist or a true artist is not too sure of himself when he does something, they just do their thing as inspiration came and its fans who make it become great
he is asked about what djino said in an interview that bcbg musicians are not well known enough because jb stopped public rehearsals, and he says an artist does not prove his worth based on so call popularity but based on what he has to offer and adds that since himself moleso did not play that much songs in wenge he does not consider himself like an important member of wenge history,he was bound to showcase his talent more but time and circumstances did not help so he is not on the same level as guys like makaba, ficarre, mbokaliya and revealed that he still knows perfectly songs of chemin de fer which he played and that its a wonderful album which will we discover when its released
he thinks what affected bcbg most at some point is the schengen ban and difficulties to tour even in africa at some point and new musicians could not understand that there was very serious things happening and probably though its jb himself who wanted to block their progression and they basically did anti terro in africa to almost survive, him pathy remember having a bit of argument with ficarre who was not convinced about quality of studio in africa and feared they'd do a poor work and he told ficarre dont worry you are there, i am there, mbokaliya is there we'll do our thing we'll adapt to the situation and he adds that the best way for musicians to be known is to sing in songs if you are a singer,or to play instruments,in short you have to record what you have to offer and gives example of chai ngenge saying chai did not become famous because he was shining in public rehearsals or because jb was  taking him by the hand and doing media roundup with him but because for example he had a great contribution on album th so the generation of djino blossomed late because  jb was struggleing to record properly in those new conditions( i saw an interview of jb recently where he said  musicians had to wake him up as he was sleeping on the floor to record esau he was physically and emotionally drained and they had finished all their budget it was their last session if he did not record esau anti terro would not have been released because they ran out of money also having to pay french engineer jean marc de la vallee who came to south africa for six months) not because of lack of public rehearsals
ado asks about an incident djino talked about,in the parts of anti terro done in kinshasa where him, eric mente, fudji and gessan sakoko participated and he accused jdl of being behind the fact he did not appear on cd,and moleso says he has to be very honest it was himself, first he went to ask jb if it was not too early to let them sing since they were still quite raw as singers and jb said no they have to sing people have to discover them and he explained why he tricked them saying the instrumentists since they could not do mabanga like singers give a couple of people to singers to insert in their lines, and himself moleso was at the forefront of defending that so that they can also gain some money and he even had sometimes to insist that jb starts mabanga with the instrumentists lists so that they can return home happy and come motivated the day after as they have the hardest part of the work, playing their instruments then guiding the singers to sing well on the notes and what happened is that guitarists gave their list on that song guy mbuala to them, but they refused to do it and gave an arrogant answer and since at that time he was a bit hot tempered he went for revenge on them, when they went to south africa,he went to see jb and said boss we have to talk and he says he is not finding their voices on the hard disk(him kibens sunda  were the artistic direction of group),he requested to do some work with pro tools software and jb thought they'll find it in the south africa studio whereas it was another one so it could not read their files,so him moleso returned to kinshasa on his own for few days and he asked to go with jdl since he had nothing more to do,so they went to kinshasa and he tricked them and when he explained to jb he was not finding their voices  jb got very very furious he never saw jb this angry
then kibens, richard mukena, bikou lebrun and boguys did the song instead(but it was changed to a mono lead song with no vocals)
He is asked about when fans told jb to get rid of the old musicians and say he is happy that jb did not follow because fans do not analyse things the same way as musicians, and jb loves those guys for particular artistic reasons and if they had to be replaced they had to be replaced with guys of a better artistic pedigree which was not the case  so they ended up working together and some groups made mistake of kicking people out and struggled badly after because the guys after were not up to the level of those before
and he adds that a true artist never gets big headed, once you get too big headed and think you are up in the sky its the debut of your downfall and gives example of himself being amazed at  a legend like pepe felly manuaku saying he has to learn a bit again while he is an absolute legend for all guitarists
people who pushed for the generation of kibens to be kicked out though that the new generation will come with something very exceptional but when they understand it was not that special they calmed down on protests
ado asks whether he was paid in bcbg and he says yes but he benefited much more on personal help from jb, and reminds when he started playing j'suis la in studio jb was so happy with his inspiration that he gave him all the money he had in his pocket, and several times he went to see jb when he needed money and received much more than his salary
and he reveals he left the group because he was going through a very tough period with the lost of his son, then the fact that combattants of UK were angry that jb and bcbg refused to come to protests against kabila because it could put them in jeopardy with congolese authorities, and one member of his family who was in the reunion informed him that they planned to do something to hrut jb and the idea they found was to break his arms so that he cant play guitar since jb loves him a lot,so he did not attend the next concert and since the group did not react surely thinking he just left like musicians leave in europe he felt it was destiny which decided they had to separate
and he says he has songs but he does not see himself doing an album and some people lack that self honesty and see themselves as stars and ready for that big gamble when they are not,so they go and record and it ends up going unnoticed and he does not want that so he continues to work with various artists

I was shocked to hear Pathy Moleso saying that Chemin de Fer was already and that it’s only about to bring it to the factory, etc. But now 13 years later its stil not released.I don’t think even that it will come out. People are already waiting 6 years for Balle de Match, so about Chemin de Fer... bosana.

Thanks @ Maitre Archos. I was just starting to watch this interview when i noticed that you had already transcribed it. So Pathy Moleso is the one who played that guitar in Esau? I could be wrong but he is the only Congolese guitarist i have seen who is left handed. And i like his honesty. Most people would not admit to things that he has admitted to.

Wenge BCBG were the first victims of the combattans-phenomenon in the UK. I remember that there was a complot to kill JB and beat the musicians of BCBG to death, but some Jamaicaan bodyguards protected them.

So if I understand well, the combattans of London came with the idea of the ban against Congolese music, because of JB Mpiana refusing to protest against Kabila? If he accepted then it would have been the end of his carreer. He had already problems with some influent politicians who were pro-Werra and couldn’t go to the Schengen-area 5 years long partly because them.

Was that Dock Eiffel-concert before their concerts in the UK or after ? Wow even some African countries were refusing to give them visa’s. I remember them having writtenabout the difficulties they had to record Anti Terro on the booklet.

Yes he played Ezau. There was also an instrumental song on Anti-Terro with him playing jazz-music. There some who are left handed, but they hadn’t alot of fame. Fiston Zamuangana Savimpi for example, the guy who played rhythm during Wenge BCBG’s first concert at Bataclan and the Titianic-album

yeah chemin de fer was already done when they were doing internet then  when they were going  to europe until 2003 then on his own trips to europe and recently in his own studio
it had 14 songs, out of it zadio was removed,je suis la,clin doeil, nungu nungu and later bolonia and engobo
jb has over 80 songs either pre recorded either recorded and mixed or only remain to be mixed then he sends the "weakest" into the group albums, the problem is that he wanted chemin de fer to be recorded in europe, actually he never wanted to record for a second in africa except primus ads so he changes his mind for fun over sound,God knows how his career would have been with the original chemin de fer which had great balance, love songs, sebene songs with lyrics of advice, one folkloric song and two generiques

You think he'll ever release Chemin de Fer to appease his fans or will that be in the vault forever?

it was after with intervention of christophe muzungu or somebody like that, even to get the visas for that concert it was one hell of a problem, kibens genta  who had houses had to put their houses on the line like if they remain the group wont get visas anymore embassies requested proof that the musicians wont run away, and djino and co also applied but they said maximum 19 visas or something like that it was a very limited team yeah they missed 6 concerts abroad in that period in africa over letters and so on
i remember even djino mente and co had to go leave together in genta's second house for some times because they were receiving calls that since the first team of bcbg ran away, they'll prove them by sending their petits in kin to beat the young guys so that jb gets scared and  accepts their conditions

he will but he is too much of a idealistic guy, where he is he still thinks that there will be a producer who will splash the cash on him and warrant an intensive promo like in the past,he refuses to accept that he has to do it himself, which is why if you notice well he has started becoming inconsistent on albums release ever since its too much in his own responsability

True. In recent interviews I have heard him say if a producer comes today with money and says release an album he would gladly release even Balle De Matche without hesitation.

@Cavalier Solitaire

He should consider crowd funding since no producer is going to invest heavily in the promotion of Chemin de Fer (an album ten years too late) and Balle De Matche since Heritier, Werrason, & Fally have eclipsed him in current popularity.

I hate to pull an EMO kiekie, but the demand for a Wenge BCBG album isn't what it used to be. JB Mpiana sat idle for too long...

If he's looking for a good producer, why not David Monsoh? They've already worked together on the album Soyons Sérieux. Monsoh has a history of producing eclectic albums for Koffi Olomide, Fally Ipupa, and others.

Maybe he should consider spliting the cost of music videos and promotion with the producer, because to tackle a venture where the producer bears the brunt of the financial risk is a huge request.

He needs to he able to negotiate, or those albums will never see the light of day.

David Monsoh is a big thief. Don't you know how it ended with Fally Ipupa, Meiway, Magic System and many other artists who were under his wings ? Yes, they worked with JB Mpiana on Soyons Serieux, but it didn't end well with the two guys and the promotion wasn't done well.

The Congolese music-industry is death. Nobody will putt alot of money to produce someone. Only if it's a new guy to gain alot of money on his back and/or create the artist, like the way Fabregas and Claudia Bakisa were created by Publicomstudio of Leny Bidens, before Koffi stole Fabregas. Or the way David Monsoh made Fally Ipupa a big star in Africa and known in the French media and giving him some connections in the French music-industry. But not a legend like JB Mpiana, Werrason or Koffi Olomide. It's to expensive and if they accept to do it will not end well or the promotion won't be like it has to be. Look how Badive ended with JB Mpiana after producing Anti Terro, Duo d'Enfer with Werrason on Temps Present or Mpova Music with Koffi trying to produce Cindy's EP which in reality a foretaste of 13eme Apotre.

The mpunda-dance was a huge succes before the release of the album, but the most people were dissapointed when the generique came out after dancing it a year long. JB Mpiana himself wasn’t able to promote the generique well because the censorship-commission forbad the dance before performing at Dock Eiffel. It forced him to record olingi Lola to Lifelo, which killed already a big part of the promotion before even releasing album. Then 5 days after releasing Soyons Serieux, the combattans-hype came with people not even focusing to the album. With people more talking about the future elections Kabila vs Tshisekedi, the cancelled concerts of Fally & Werrason in Europe, the way they were following members of PPRD in Europe to beat them and interviews of pro-PPRD against the combattans. People appreciated the rumba’s Gros BB, Etoile du Berger & Bolonia, but the promotion of the album wasn’t done well. People didn’t even know other songs and generiques of the album while it was a good album. This all created even a conflict between JB Mpiana & David Monsoh. With JB in his opinion finding that David Monsoh didn’t spent enough money to promote the album. There were made various articles about Soyons Serieux not being received like it had to be (Kongotimes, Digitalcongo, Congomikilu, etc) and people finding it strange while back in 2010 it was the most waited album.

ah yeah indeed i forgot and the licks he played at the very end was on the song jb did for amida on chemin de fer which was called mon paradis(hence the nickname mama paradis),that song would have definitely become a classic a mix of classic music,a pop chorus a salsa transition...with zero mabanga(it was a typical kibens song with all his "craziness" lol)

I don't know too much about the business relationships in congolese music between artist and their producers; in that regard, I'm an outsider looking in. I just noticed that David Monsoh had good albums to his producer resume, like Droit Chemin and Effrakata so I was like "why not him?".

@Manzambi94

I didn't particularly enjoy Soyons Serieux, but I thought that album was troubled in recording because JB Mpiana was taking too much time assemble the album. Didn't he make the generique at the last minute in London, while touring. I could be mistaken. We mostly can agree that the album wasn't good, but it was well promoted through the dance and cries.

That was with Kipe Ya Yo in 2006. With them wanting to record that album of in UK when those problems with the combattans started. But they had then to return quickly to Kinshasa and Kipe Ya Yo then being delayed to 2007. They recorded the generique and the most songs of the album in studio-Ndiaye in Kinshasa.

I said what I said. I was living in a normal world, just cause mpunda was a success doesn't make a whole album great, SS was trasj trash the sound was awful.. it's by far the worst bcbg album
You are crazy, Nono Fudji song was great, even the other generique were on point especially the seben with Cellulaire and Bin Laden and what about Chai? Mbua was huge
Err who are you calling crazy? Aren't you the dude who always says "it's my opinion" especially when you said SS is the best bcbg album ever or cle boa is the best sebene since loi?
So...?

But going back to the interview. If I remember well, Pathy Moleso said that it's because of him that they didn't release Chemin de Fer and that he proposed to work on an other project. But what project? Ado Yuhe didn't ask him about that and rushed to another question. Was it Kipe Ya Yo or that primus generique?

he meant that when they got banned the original plan was chemin de fer, before group album, so when they stayed in kinshasa and started struggleing jb decided to record group album and save chemin de fer but most musicians were not convinced but they had to do something to "survive" as people thought it was the end for them with the europe ban so they did anti terro  plus the primus generiques
kipe ya yo came later from balle de match which should have been basically seguin's song since he missed on anti terro plus the song of djino fudji and co plus a generique before hopefully the ban is lifted and they do chemin de fer, then when jb understood it still was not happening that ban is lifted it became an album
