Honorable Mention: Empire Bakuba
I rank mine based on hierarchy.
I chose OK Jazz as #1 because of the stars they produced and creativity.
Zaïko because of the various offshoots and longevity. They birthed solo artists like Papa Wemba and Bozi Boziana along with child groupie like Anti-Choc, Viva La Musica, Choc Stars, Langa Langa Stars etc.
If there was a top 4 QL and WMM would share the 3rd spot. However I put QL #3 based on years in the game and the stars they produced. WMM next for the same reason.
African Jazz shouldn’t be any debate. They’re the pioneers and produced stars like Tabu Ley, Dr. Nico and Manu Dibangu.
I chose Empire Bakuba for Honorable Mention because if Pepe Kalle was still alive, he’d be a force.
Omissions:
L’International Afrisa
Talented singers and musicians but Le Vieux couldn’t weather the defections during his US tour. Male artists like Kiesse Diambu and Dodo Munoko should’ve been way bigger stars but passed over by M’bilia Bel and Faya Tess. Go figure.
Wenge BCBG
Merely based on consistency.

2) Viva La Musica (this made created so many future legends King Kester Emeneya, Rigo Star, Dindo Yogo, Reddy Amisi, Debaba, etc. the list is long. Its also one of the rare bands that allowed artists to release solo-albums. Reddy Amisi, Stino Mubi, Joly Mubiala released many succesful soloalbums without problem).
3) Zaiko Langa Langa (the 1979-1981 when Evoloko and Bozi came back and joined le quartet Nyoka Longo-Bimi Ombale-Lengi Lenga-Likinga Redo. Having lead guitarist Pepe Felly Manuaki and releasing hitsongs like Kwiti Kwiti, Obi, Femme Ne Pleure Pas, Viya, Crois Moi, Pa Oki, C'est Trop Tard Mimi, etc.)
4) Wenge Musica 4x4 TT
5) Choc Stars (the 1985-1991 generation of singers General Defao, Debaba Mbaki, Carlyto Lassa, Djuna Djanana and lead guitarist Roxy Tshimpaka. Nobody could beat their chorus)

Viva La Musica is number three because Papa Wemba really managed to make incredible stars within the band and yet they did not depart. I am speaking about biggest example Reddy Amisi. It is proof that Papa Wemba loved talent.
