I prefer Lebou's style
-
I prefer Lebou too. What are their best solos/perfomances?
-
Oh this is easy!
Let's look at the Olympia show.
Before the "Belo belo" dance happens there's a part where everyone gathers around to "praise" the guitarist!
You have Lebou during the Miss De Miss sebene giving his all when being presented and you have Felly during the Ultimatum sebene playing a few boring notes when being presented.
Lebou's part: 47:10
Felly's part: 1:52:52

High five for that man! I'm glad I'm not the only one!

I think Felly Tyson is the better soloist but the one who had more energy was indeed Lebou Kabuya.
-
Wow the concert comparison makes it so clear and easy to tell who is the best....... Thank you kkkkkj

I like the opinion that you brought out, and I agree with when you said that Lebou has more energy. When listening to songs like Sanction and Volte-face you can definitely hear that there and that's why FOR ME, I feel that Lebou is better because he really know how to bring a mad kind of hype to his solos!
And with Felly, what is good abiut his solos are that they're pretty "iconic" considering how he marked his territory in "Loi", "Effrakata", "Affaire D'état" and so on! So I see where you're coming from!

This is not a good comparison, may be some list song they have played as some of us do not really know which song was played Labou or Felly, although I like felly guitar on Skol Longitima, the only song I know that was played by him

Very well, I suggest you have a look at my reply to Franco Pepe Kalle's comment just above!

The Loi generique was played by Lebou. The rest of songs were shared Micko, Fontaine & Motomolo (by Felly), Manou & Papito Charme (by Lebou Kabuya). The same for Effrakata & Affaire d’Etat where sebenes were shared by Felly & Ramazani and in Droit de Veto by Popolipo, Felly & Lebou. Attentat by Popolipo, Ridens & Felly.
In Effrakata, Ramazani played Gilba, Ravisse, Suivez le Guide and Felly played both generiques, RAS, Medecine de Nuit.
In Droit de Veto, Lebou played Rond Point, Prototype, Nyandja & Retour Riva. Felly played Urgence, Likombe, Droit de Veto-generique & Shopping. Popolipo played Rafiki & Plus Jamais.
-
Who played which on Attentat? I know that Ridens played the generique and I'm sure Beniko played Sans Anesthesie, but what about the rest?

Ahhhh! Thank you for the information Mfumu! This has opened a brand new door, considering the fact that I don't know which individual songs are played by soloists other than just the génériques so props to you for that!
-
About Loi, I forgot to add that Popolipo played on Vicky.
Felly played Nul n’est Parfait, Kamutshima & Victoire
Popolipo played Malanda Ngombe, Sans Anesthesie, Tchernobyl and Number One
Ridens Makosso played a part of Cameleon & Attentat.
Roga Roga played a part of Cameleon
Rigo Star played Chocolat
Saladin Feirrera played African Kings
-
I never knew that Rigo played on Chocolat! Almost after 9 years since their collaboration on Les Prisonniers Dorment! Even with Saladin from Soukous Stars!
-
Koffi’s last collaboration with Rigo Star was on Loi. Chocolat got recorded during the Loi studiosessions. Lokua Kanza directed then the chorus of Iteneraire (which arranged by Maïka Munan) and Chocolat (with Rigo on te lead). But Chocolat didn’t make it on the tracklist and he released it in private for his family. Then when the Attentat-project he decided to correct it and put it on the tracklist, because he wanted to lure the French public and African children Born/raised in Europe, in order to fill Bercy. That’s also why he recorded African Kings with Pasi who was after Doc Gyneco, France’s most popular rapper at that time and Si Si Si with Coumba Gawlo who had then a summerhit in 1998 in France with song Pata Pata (which was originally sung by Miriam Makeva)

Ahhhh the old marketing strategy! Brilliant!
-
From the looks of it. It seems felly was riding the coattails during the long prime of koffi's career lol
-
felly and lebou remind me of binda vs other bassists
-
Felly Dimbedi was from day1 the main solist, since that he replaced his friend and top solist Yoto Nkelani (also known as Delta Force) who went to Zaïko to replace the then sick Mbuta Matima. When they were about to prepare Pas de Faux Pas, Lebou came in, at that time he was not at that level yet and he had to improve his guitar skills. But he was still allowed to play lead on some songs (Stilla for example) of that album, since that Koffi liked his looks alot and his fashion style. Then Beniko came and Koffi of him immediatly the main solist of his group, playing lead on all songs of Noblesse Oblige (leaving Miss des Miss and Evangile to Lebou. Popolipo took Lebou & Felly under his wings. Felly and Lebou would progress alot at that time. Koffi started to love Lebou alot. He made of Lebou the new chef d’orchestre and n1 solist in the pickorder of the group. Felly starting to play more rhythm. Lebou played in Magie the most songs as lead guitarist. Then they played V12 where the three guys shared the tracks with Lebou still being the main solist but Felly getting the trust of Koffi back. Then things went wrong when Lebou started to date Mboyo (Rip), who would not long after that die. The relationship between Koffi & Lebou wasn’t the same anymore. He had some guitar licks on Ultimatum, but the recordingsfile got lost when QL came in Europ. S they had to re-record the album again. Which made Lebou not participate on that album, because he was left behind in Kinshasa. Then when Koffi wanted to finish Loi (Loi was recorded in the same as Ultimatum) He wanted fire, so he brought Lebou along with the other instrumentists of QL & atalaku’s to Europe to record new sebene and new animations. After Loi, he became again the main solist until that he left to join Academia. Felly became then to main solist until 2006.
I prefer Lebou as solist. The reason that Felly is more kwown then Lebou, is because he stayed like 20 years in Quartier Latin, playing also on many generics and main-songs who had a huge succes (Andrada, Ultimatum, Piwawa, Force de Frappe, etc.). While Lebou spent only 6/7 years (not countig his short return), went to Academia and disappeared for a long time.
The difference between both guys is that Felly is strong in interpreting in concerts Koffi’s old songs of the 80s and he’s very disciplined. Lebou is stubborn, doesn’t follow the rules sometimes, but he’s very creative. Felly isn’t a bad solist, he stepped his game from and giving the best of himself in Droit de Veto, Attentat, Force de Frappe & Effrakata. From 2003, he slowed down, maybe because he saw that his position wasn’t in danger anymore or the way he was dismissed as chef d’orchestre after Affaire d’Etat. He did also a good job in V12 & Pas de Faux Pas.

it could also be the age factor, from monde arabe most of what he played was mbetenge or poupa's work and he played because he's tyson,it reminds me a bit of ficarre both had a strong start and a period when they started to outplay in term of songs other soloists then at some point it started fading, you'll notice until today tyson's songs of recent years were never as popular as the one by alvarito, ficarre on the other hand could not stay number 1 as jb never ordered people to give him their solos so that he stays number one so even a guy who openly says he is not a sebenist like pathy moleso played lead more than him at bercy and afterwards

Reminds me of Hono Kapanga, because he created that unique sound of Wazekwa's generiques. However, it was Bijoux Depaulga that played solo on many of the important songs like Dose Unique,Tu me manques, Sautez déjà, and Cinq Etoile among other songs. From what I noticed, it wasn't until Faux Mutu Moko Boye where Hono started playing lead a lot, often he was mi-soloist.

Felly in my view was not the kind who really cared to be flashy or too out going. He wanted to simply show his power in the guitar. But Lebou Kabuya was someone that wanted to be noticed (obviously he got that from Beniko Popilipo) and he tended to more passion into his guitar because he also loved playing music in a passionate way. That is why you get the differences between those two great soloists.

Who played the solo on "Dossier du Jour"? Probably the best solo on the album.
-
Thanks for clarification, my observation is that, each album has its own way of solo guitar sound and all the soloist have to follow that pattern. Just like Pentagon and Titanic, where solo guitar is shared by Makaba, Mboka Liya and Ficare. It is very difficult for a normal fan to identify which song was played by which soloist. However in Kibuisa Mpimpa, the generic bears the hallmark Mboka Liya and Kibuisa was Kapaya. Mboka Liya is the only soloist that most of his works bears some similarities, you can listen to Madova by general Defao and Etepe Buengo to prove that.

I have a gut instinct that it was Beniko... Maybe

It’s Felly. Popolipo played on Etat Civil.
-
Is somebody who knows who played each song on Magie's album ?
-
Magie, Mansouri, Amen, Sans Suite & Meslian were done by Lebou Kabuya. Petit Na London, Julia, Sylvekou, Detresse & Shambouyi by Beniko Popolipo. Detresse & Dessin Anime (they released it on Ultimatum) were done by Professeur Didace Iboula.

Thank you. For my part, I always said that I prefer Lebou Kabuya because he had an energic and aggressive way to play lead and this is what we need for sebene but Felly is good to play rumba. Like with the example @BercyFinest98 put, at Koffi's Olympia when the two played the sebene of Miss des miss with Belo-Belo's cri (for the future Droit de veto album) there is no match... Felly played it boringly while Lebou played this with energyyyy. Lebou plays in the same way as Wenge's guitarists

Felly can also play agressive just listen to Arche de Noe, Andrada, Medecin de Nuit, Droit de Veto, Generation Bercy, Effrakata, Fontaine, Urgence (the distortion part) & Force de Frappe. He’s just not a showman like Lebou.

I just finished listening to Code Pin and Felly's ending distortion sebene really was something. That's the thing with ya Dimbedi. He can go hard when he's in the mood, and some of his best playing comes from QL's prime, but Lebou has always been the more energetic guitarist.

Did Pathy Bass play on Loi? Binda is a good player, but it sounds like he had some help on some songs like the generique and other songs.
-
Yes. The Loi album was played by Guy Nsangue, Pathy Bass abd Binda Bass. About Binda Bass not playing Loi by himself is not a problem. What’s wrong with a bassplayer not playing a whole album by himself ? Don’t other that was very young at that time and being only for 2 years active as professional musician. On Nioblesse Oblige, Rocky Blacnhard also didn’t play bass by himself, they invited Ngounda Lokito.

There's nothing wrong with bassists sharing their responsibilities on albums, I was just curious.
