I wish they would give it a rest with these world albums. Nobody wants em. Not the people in Kin not the people in london brussel paris. World albums from african artist rarely work and when they do they never captivate the grassroots fans. When has this technique ever worked??? Thank god Koffi never had a world music period and because of it has the best catalogue to this day. Those world album really dilute your discography.
Did that technique work for Papa wemba ? Did he really need that? Or was he still gonna be famous is europe without those albums.
If anybody is on FERRE’s staff please tell him to abort mission on the world album. The boy’s catalogue is a sans faute so far it’d be a shame

That technic worked very well for Wemba and made him being respected in Europe and the United States. If he didn’t do world music then he would have been on the same level like Emeneya and the press around world not having paid him the tribute when he died. World music made him also be known better in Africa because before that he was only known in Zaire, Congo Brazzaville, Rwanda and Burundi. His work with Martin Messoniers and Le Voyageur made him known in Francophone Africa (Senegal, Ivory Coast, Guinea & Mali) and his Emotion album made him known in Anglophone Africa (Kenya, Tanzania, Nigeria).

Tokoss 2 flopped really? where are you people been living in past few weeks, I was in Kinshasa the week before last there are not Album who is on top than Tokoss and people know all the songs. We all have see when Fally was In Benin, Cote D'Ivoire and Cameroon how people were singing and asking songs from Tokoss 2.
So flop about what?

Are you sure ? Im in the states and no one here knows who Papa Wemba is. Does the average white person know who he is in England? Because lets be clear the world music is not for black people its for the whites. The average guy in Mali is gonna pick a real wemba album before he picks a world album and same with the guy in burkina faso and the guy from senegal. Hell the only song of Wembas thats made it into a french movie (Black Mic Mac) was not a world song but i believe it was Matebu or Proclamation.
I personally think foreigners like authentic stuff more than the stuff thats catered to them. Ive bumped into people in the states here, white people, that knew Franco. Franco never did world music his music was authentic. And last point, nobody knows emeneya outside of the congolese diaspora. His world endeavors never helped him i dont believe. He was barely talked about in france by the press and when he did it was the middle of the ndombolo era and the average american or english white person has NO idea who he is trust me. He’s only a world artist to congolese.
The world album is just so they can sit in front of the french TV press and have more ease to talk about the music. Dilute it so its easier on the new listener, which just never works, sorry to say.
If someone is gonna like congo music or stumble upon congo music are they gonna prefer Tokoss or Control, be real.

I will not follow you on this one; in Africa, including Congo, Fally's traditional albums are more known and more successful than the world albums.
I mean, his so-called urban albums are fueled by feats. His solo singles flopped. Who's playing ca bouge pas and Message? They went and came. Even the Matt Pokora single flopped. If it wasn't for Daju, all the singles would've been flops.
The most ironic thing is that the most successful singles out of his two urban albums is Eloko Oyo, a folk song...

I agree with you. We tend to overrate the real impact of those world music albums.
They were made for white people but to be specific a small number of white people. World music was a niche genre. It was only knwon by a few white people interested in exotic music. It never went full mainstream. Peter Gabriel label, the real world, was a small label, not a big major.
Emeneya killed his career following that world album success. I think that congolese musicians should abandon that illusion of breaking into the western mainstream market; it will never happen.
Even if you dilute your music, western people will still prefer the original. Ferre and Fally are wasting their prime pumping out urban music that will be less successful than their traditional albums. Look at Ferre's Regarde Moi. All that hype for 4 million views. That type of song will never find an audience; white people won't care about it, black people won't care about it.

It's true my brother's there now in Kin on holiday and he's telling me the bars have been playing tokooos and world music, some have even been playing Fabregas's urban song Brenda.

Just un dance, Pesa posa, Champion, likolo........ I hate the genre but people love it lets not deny that lol, I have seen how people go crazy in concerts over these songs

I agree with you that in bars and clubs and parties in Kin, they play more Nigerian and Tanzanian music, and urban music in general etc. than local music.
However, globally, when Congolese artists do this type of music, it's less successful than their traditional songs or just as successful. They are chasing the trend. It's for me a bad strategy. They can'y fight Ngerian, French or Tanzanian musicians on that ground.
I don't think Fally made Tokoos for the congolese market; he did trying to break thru the french and international markets.
However, I fail to see how the Tokoss series gave him a big advantage compared to his traditional albums. To me, he would've put his big urban singles (Kiname, Mannequin, Un coup) in his traditional albums, he would've done a better job.
Let's see how Ferre's Harmony will do. In terms of commercial success, I don't have big expectations, except if he hides behind some big feats. I don't see that album finding an audience.
