Probably the most honest sam interview ever

Probably the most honest sam interview ever
Give us the summary bro
-
Sam Tshintu is a excellent storyteller. So the guy singing with them at Hotel Invest and the concert at Intercontinental was Papy Nzinga ? What became of Papy Nzinga and why did he Papparazzi quickly ? Weren't they patient enough ? I was surprised to hear that Sam and Somono were planning to recruit Cele Kibinda, because of Bouro Mpela's unpredictability. Looks like almost every band wanted to recruit Cele. Hearing Sam's story about Pathy coming late when rehearshing at RTNC 2, it was a huge mistake to not having a back-up bass-player for Pathy Bass. Thinking back about ITB Minos' interview with Teddy Mola, I think that it was Pathy Bass himself who refused to have Rocky Blanchard and ITB Minos in Academia, who rehearsed weeks long after being recruited by Faustin Djata to wait Academia to come in Kinshasa for concerts.
Congolese musicians always like to brag to be the first to perform at x or y place. I would like to see the video of the concert at the then new builed Palais de la Culture. So Academia came twice to Ivory Coast ? Because in the VHS of Sanction-clips, they were making a commercial for their concerts during christmas at Abidjan.
Really strange that they didn't receive any money from the concerts they made in Brazzaville & Kinshasa at Palais du Peuple, Cinemax & Invest. They were really distracted. Bands like Academia who go to Kinshasa for the time needs someone like David Monsoh to manage the money, because fame can make you blind and forget to be focussed. Someone must have been really happy to get away with all their money.
Academia was a nightmare for maison mere. Planning to perform at Stade Massamba Debat in Brazzaville, but the rain messing everything up, while Academia performing at a packed Palais des Congres the same moment. I see why they always used to say “massive respect pour academia". I dont think that Maison Mere did that on purpose to perform the same day like Academia when they had their first concert at Cinemax. Because bands have their second kin-concert always at Intercontinental when coming from Europe and normally dont need to promote the event for weeks. They always start to promote it one or 2 week before, because of having a solid fan-base. Maison Mere at that time just did their concert at Stade des Martyrs and their two concerts at Inter were the following week. Those concert both at Salon Congo and Parking were packed. But that of Academia had more hype because of being their first and the succes of their album. Cinemax also being small (2.000) to receive for such concerts. The cultural policy in Congo is failing for multiple decenia, Kinshasa normally needs to have atleast 3 or 4 halls like Zenith de Paris. Btw I heard that they are opening a proper music-hall towards end 2023, which is in front of Palais du Peuple.

Academia was so lucky to not getting blocked in Kinshasa when coming back from their first tour. It was a miracle the way they got back. I would become sick if they would receive an order to leave the France-territory. Kenzy was cool to let them get proper papers and them coming for the second to Kinshasa with those papers.
It was a big disrespect towards the public from Bouro to show up late during their concert at Intercontinental from their second return to Kinshasa. The concert is on youtube btw. I would have done the same thing as donor to Sam. Bouro could have done it during their 3 or 4th concert, but not the first one. However, Sam Tshintu himself was not saint by doing the same thing as revenge a few concerts later.
Sam and Bouro were right to refuse Suzuki in Academia because of not having the same spirit like them. Suzuki always makes trouble and Sam ended up by being right.
Wow, so Bouro Mpela left the moment Sam Tshintu just arrived in Kinshasa to get the musicians. Must have been a big disappointed from when reading the newspapers. I wonder what would have been happened if he accepted Faustin Djata’s machiavellic plan to leave Academia and made those in Kinshasa recruited “his” musicians. It would have created huge buzz. Maybe that Bouro could have denied his return to Quartier Latin and pointing the finger to Sam for killing Academia and them getting reconciled in Europe with the “bana poto”.
I had to laugh when Sam Tshintu noticed that Mustapha and Clovis were recruited by Somono (having a hidden agenda) as reaction to the in Kinshasa recruited musicians that he brought to Europe. Both guys didn’t even follow Somono to Kinshasa and also didn’t team up with him when he came back to Europe after leaving Academia.
Was surprised that Beniko Popolipo wasn’t part of Academia and not being supposed to be there in Europe with them, but Sam bringing him to Europe out from respect for the way he coached them. Tonton Lay being brought in last minute by “bana yolo” while all visa’s were delivered and him going the place of an administrator.
I always thought that Academia’s first concert in Kinshasa when coming back from Viagra was at YMCa because of Pathy’s interview. Strange to hear that their concert that they did that Parking of GHK was mpiaka. Normally its always packed when a band comes from Europe. I would to like to hear Lebou’s part of the story from his departure. But I hearing’s Sam Tshintu’s version and comparing it to that of Pathy, I think that Sam was right. Them all having made a clear agreement about nobody being allowed by the guards to come in later than Sam Tshintu during rehearshal, to have a well organised structure, but Lebou not wanting to listen and being mad when not getting allowed to get in.
Those fights they had in Kinshasa after Viagra must be something spiritual. Like how could suddenly a snake appear from the toilet when Lebou and Somono are fighting against eachother and all rehearsals from then being mpiaka ? Madilu was right, going back what he said to them when meeting each other during the mix of Sanction and Pouvoir, about being strong spiritually.
lol, Sam Tshintu not knowing why Somono left. He knows it well. It must have been scary for the musicians of Academia to see Somono coming with gangs to attack them with machetes.
I remember that even Modogo left them for a moment. But those vieux of Binza reconciling them, but I didn’t even knew that even Mboshi left for a moment. Wasn’t it the same concert of Zaiko at Cinemax that used to be on djomegadt’s channel 10 years ago, being part of the fara-fara Zaiko vs Academia but Academia still being despite Somono’s and Mboshi’s absence? Was it in Europe that Sam reconciled with Mboshi to come back to Kinshasa, them making videos with Mustapha and replying to journalist Serge Kayembe that Academia didn’t disband and them performing at Olympia soon ?
The story of sam tshintu told about the witchdoctor shows that nkisi isn’t anything.
So the guys that prepared their 2002 Europe tour messed everything up. It could be that they were at Koffi’s camp and finally saw it as a gold occasion to kill Academia by going to different embassies with different list of names. This all would have happened if Sam worked with Vieux Wawina again like in 2000 for visa’s. So sad that the ngulu-affair killed them. Sam Tshintu said that it was hard for them in Kinshasa, them not having any instrument and no sponsor. I thought that they had a contract with Bralima, because I saw him promoting Primus in multiple interviews and Somono saying that he left because Sam not being fair about the contract he signed with Bralima.
Hearing this all shows that doing music in Kinshasa is useless. Werrason, Koffi Olomidé, JB Mpiana and Papa Wemba were still existing because of having massive support from donors. The 4 were really stupid for refusing to not change the system when getting in touch with Joseph Kabila who wanted to help them through Maisha Parc.
Sam Tshintu is a big warrior (i dont mean a Fally-fan), other musicians would have become abandoned a become a brother in christ and blaming rivals for doing nkisi to justify their failure, others would become addicted to drugs and alcohol to forget all the problems. But Sam still fought to get money through concerts in Goma, Bukavu, Kigali, Kampa and Angola, to pay the debts he had from ngulu’s, just to be in peace.
-
yeah it seems like the experience from the ngulus humbled him down a lot
what i loved about his interview he took a lot of blame for himself 99,9999999 per cent of congolese musicians its always the fault of the other people
-
I’m enjoying this interview series, I always wanted him to go to ado yuhe but ado would’ve messed up the interview by asking unnecessary questions.
The guy that sang with them Papy Nzinga was in Quartier Latin, he was in the droit de veto répétition clips presented as the newly recruited musicians. Yeah I wonder why him and paparazzi didn’t stay, Paparazzi was lured into Quartier latin to replace Babia and Mustapha and also Jypson because Koffi wasn’t completely convinced by him.
That story of them visiting Papa Wemba and him telling Sam he isn’t the leader made me laugh. Interesting revelations. Koffi still hasn’t gotten over Academia being formed because he still can’t bring himself to even say academias name lol
-
It might’ve been better if Sam took Faustin Djata’s advice and kept the Kinshasa musicians for himself because if you listen to Viagra it’s like a mini Sam album and the viagra concerts in Europe he was the obvious leader. So Sam went to Kinshasa by himself and was rehearsing with the musicians by himself? If that was today Academia would’ve split there and then because it would’ve been all over YouTube and people saying Sam went solo and the other admins would’ve thought he was making the group for himself.
Sam and Bouro were right about not wanting Suzuki in the group because he’s not serious and he didn’t show up to film the viagra clips and didn’t return with them to Kinshasa.
Modogo did leave because in the Viagra bonus clips when they were in Kin he wasn’t there if was only Sam and Mboshi at the rehearsals, even in the clips they filmed in Kin he wasn’t there either.
Somono was insane to be chasing them with machetes and then chasing them and cursing them with arrows and singing traditional songs ehh
The fact that it took them 45 days to record viagra was just ridiculous, Academia was a mess at that point, the way they were always fighting and arguing it’s amazing they even finished the album.
Such a sad shame how things ended for Sam and Academia.
-
49 concerts in total incluing 6 concerts in Paris is not nothing, they even did New Morning. So they were basically performing twice in a week for months. I wonder if they all their shows in Paris were sold out, because when a bands comes from Kinshasa they will get mpiaka after performing for the third time since that people in Paris mostly like to see something new.

Suzuki even created problems during their Academia reunion 4 years ago.
I don't think that a new reunion will work. Because Sam Tshintu himself said here that Kenzy of Secteur A contacted them for a remix-album of Sanction, but it al went wrong after the first meeting because of Somono wanting the "founder" role which scared the rest who took part to the negotiations.
-
Btw was Sam Tshintu not scared to get arrested when he was performing in Goma & Bukavu ? Because the DGM could get him and put him in jail in Kinshasa for having debts to ngulu’s

I don’t think their concert in Marie Bell was sold out because they didn’t even show the crowd once compared to the videos of their other concerts, and also them performing the exact same songs in every concerts can get tiring and predictable

I always felt like they stayed to long in Europe during the Viagra-tour. 6 months is the max or need to be Quartier Latin, Maison Mère, Nouvelle Ecriture & Wenge BCBG.
Would have nice to know why Suzuki and Lebou Kabuya didn’t show up at the first LSC of Eric Menthe and co. Because back then it was stated in the press that they both agreed along with Mboshi to return back in Quartier Latin. Also, Suzuki wasn’t there in the VHS “Nzungu Ekotoko” where Sam presents the new team. In the concert of Concert Noble it was stated that it was Suzuki’s presentation, but it doesn’t make sense because he was part of their bands for months and them already having several concerts. Must be a way to mask the problems

Did Suzuki not show up in Kinshasa or the clips because he suspected the group would disband? It's similar to how Baby didn't join Les Marquis because he foresaw leadership problems brewing. Maybe he got too accustom to life in Europe, the lifestyle of musicians in Kinshasa is constant hard work.
Academia should of stayed with Secteur A. I remember you said they weren't respecting the contracts which made Academia part ways with Secteur A, but what was being asked of them that they disagreed with?
-
normally they should have stayed in french territory, metropolitan france and west indies, until at least 3 years then evolve into an hybrid group the way for exemple warner has done with fally or universal africa with toofan or wanted to do with dj arafat aswell a group with one foot in europe the other in africa
but in less than a year they already went to africa and they were also against making the band bigger,i have a friend who used to be an assistant sound engineer somewhere he is shocked when i tell him that at some point groups like bcbg and maison mere went above 100 musicians, for the european and "professional standard" a group and its reserve is 15 musicians max
-
I don't think that Academia would earn the respect they ended up earning, if they followed Kenzy's ideology of only staying in France and focusing their promotion there and the French West Indies. Such contracts suit better to Soukous-artists like Aurlus Mabele, Kanda Bongo Man, Diblo Dibala and co.
Apart the song Faux Patron, the album Sanction wasn't made for that market. I dont think that people who usually never listen to Congolese music, would consume that album like they listen to mainstream music. They would never get that music.
-
I still don’t understand why it was only Sam that got in trouble for the Ngulu affaire and the other admins got away scott free

If they respected the contract, wouldn't they lose their fanbase in Kinshasa? Defao and Kester had much success in the 1990s, but lost their place as a result of staying too long away from Africa.
I can understand keeping the size of the band small, it saves money. Although I liked added singers on Viagra (except Abel Benz lol). Was the original plan just Sam, Bouro, Modogo for Viagra or was Sam's intentions was to expand?
-
Academia didn't really had a real fanbase. The majority of people had sympathy for them because of interviews they did after their departure (saying that Koffi didn't pay them well for Olympia & Zenith) and were liking their music. Most fans came from Binza/Ngaliema because of Flash Musica having their roots their. Sam, Modogo and Lebou Kabuya used to be part of Flash Musica before joining Quartier Latin. From 2000, they started slowly to create their own fanbase and next Binza, many fans coming from Yolo because of Academia's headquarter being there and many musicians they recruited coming from Yolo (Musikasika and Tonton Lay for example).
It depends. Maybe if one of them would go to Kinshasa for some playbacks. "Nouvelle Generation de la Republique Democratique" had massive succes in Europe and they had also succes in Kinshasa because of Luciana's wife coming with cassettes to Kinshasa which helped the promotion over there.
In Congolese they have a big size, because of bandleaders/bands fearing about guitarists or singer not showing up. It started in the 60s, Faugus Izeidi explained it in one of the interviews he had with Chouna Mangobo by saying that the public would sometimes wait for hours for Dr Nico or Dechaud Mwamba to show up at the concert, just because of being mad about something or show the other musicians a point that they can't without him. Bandleaders from then starting to recruit 2 musicians for every position. From the 70s it growed bigger, because of bands wanting to get more money by performing at 3 places at the same time. Bands being able to split the band in 3 and the reserve singer starting those concerts. If the fire was on place a, the singers of team a would join the place and the reserve singers move to place b, the same thing happening to place b with the reserve singers moving to place b. Zaiko Langa Langa was a master of it during the late 70s until Langa Langa Stars' creation in 1982.
Viagra would have been the same team along with Bouro. But Bouro just left the moment Sam Tshintu came to Kinshasa to get the musicians. Some were against, but majority was in favor of having the Kinshasa team in Viagra.
From https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v7TLCkDZSl8&t=2556s
from 40:35 min Suzuki, Bouro, Sam Tshintu and Modogo singing an extract of Collation. Suzuki saying that Academia would record Viagra in August 2000 and the album being released in December 2000.
In the same video they also talked about their cancelled concert in London (Tottenham) which was promoted in all cassettes produced by Jhymmy Mukelenge (Kombi Ewuti Poto, etc.) and them saying that cancelled it because they wanted the female dancers of Kinshasa being with them to, but them not having visa's to join them over there.

In my opinion, Viagra would have been well received had they released at the December of 2000. The competition was too much in 2001 with Kibusia Mpimpa in the spring and Koffi, Wemba, and JB Mpiana releasing albums in the fall.
Was it touring that pushed the album back or were they still rehearsing the songs to place on the album? I'm curious about how Congolese albums are prepared. If I'm not mistaken, the generique comes first then the rhumbas.
When Babia and Rocky Blanchard stayed in QL for many years without vocals on albums or touring abroad, are they still paid salary as official members of QL? How have they survived all those years without work? I'm assuming they're paid when they join the other members for rehearsals, but I'm not sure.
-
Its because Sam Tshintu came in november 2000 with the group and Congolese bands start recording albums when the tour is about to end. They started the recordings of Viagra somewhere in May 2001. Each band has his own way of preparing albums, some bands would go to Binza, Mont Ngafula, Maluku or Kasangulu to go on camp and prepare the album there by rehearings intensively for some weeks, other bands would stay 1 month at the leader house to prepare the album, other bands would lock themselves up at the bands headquarter to rehearse the album there for weeks and only return home to sleep.
It are the rumba's and sebene songs that are recorded first. Generiques always comes at last, because atalaku's may get inspiration or new cri's from Kinshasa on the last minute and leaders getting calls from donors who want their shout-out at a strategic place.
Babia was getting paid, but he had serious drug problems and was a few time hospitalized. He was spending most of the money on drugs. Sometimes he would dissapear for months and then suddenly coming back. Koffi helped him multiple times to put him in a rehab. Its only when he broke up with Manicke and started to date Alima Djamal that he changed, converting himself to Islam.
About Rocky Blanchard, I dont think that he was paid when he made 3th comeback in 2003. Because he didn't take part to multiple concerts. Koffi only musicians who are part of team A. There are multiple musicians who were part of Quartier Latin but not being known, because of not getting any chances to perform with them and not getting noticed at rehearshals at Oshwe, because x or y not wanting to give the mic or guitar. Koffi himself sometimes forgetting that they are member of QL and starting to yell at that to get them out. Rocky Blanchard was in the early and mid 2000s getting most of his money through session work. He re-started to get value when Koffi Olomidé came back from Danger de Mort, getting more space to play in concerts, and album who started to be recorded in Kinshasaetc. and re-became a keymember the moment Binda Bass decided to settle in Europe in 2010. Rocky biggest mistake was to leave Zaiko in 1998 to rejoin Quartier Latin to not even be selected for Olympia. It really sad how his life is right now until this day he lives at his parents house. If he stayed in Zaiko he would live in Europe right now.

Was there any members of Quartier Latin that you wished made the Team A or were you completely satisfied with all members who got vocals or played instruments on albums?
I wish Mirage Supersonic spent more time with Quartier Latin, I don't know why he didn't participate in the recordings of Danger de Mort. Did he get into trouble with Koffi? Or was he pressure out the group members of the group? I know Jipson and Soleil are known for being tough on new members of the group
-
I dont know any that was part of the team b. I only discovered that singer Ladi Miyembe and solist Champion Vualu "Dracula" (who used to play with Aime Buanga and Pierette Adams) were part of it through their interviews. It were only Assow Ngolé and Junior Kingombe who finally made it to the first team because of some departures, their patience and also their hard work.
Quartier Latin already complete there was no musician needed, just a proper keyboard player (gires synthe was limited) and 1 or 2 tenorists. Why add musicians when you already a dream team with guys like Titina, Ramazani, Binda Bass, Bouro Mpela, Fofo le Collegien, Brigade, Soleil Wanga, Fally Ipupa, Kerozène, etc.
Mirage Supersonic participated to Danger de Mort. Its just that he ran away during the tour and Koffi then ending up by deleting his vocals and replacing it by Bouro Mpela who rejoined Quartier Latin for the 3th time, like the way he did with vocals of Mustapha Nkori in Force de Frappe the moment Montana Kamenga joined. I don't understand musicians why running away while the tour isn't finished yet.
-
Is it possible to have succes in the Congolese music-scene for +10 years without doing nkisi or having pacts ? Because all those who lasted atleast 5 years being on the top all being rumored to have done bad stuff.
-
I always wonder why Mustapha and Clovis didn't rejoin Sam, Modogo and Mboshi when they came back to Europe like Abel and Beniko did.
-
Clovis joined Quartier Latin Integral and participated to the Volte EP playing bass on the generique and playing rhythm on Cessez Le Feu. About Mustapha I don’t know

Clovis played rhythm guitar too?
-
Yeah. Pathy Bass also played rhythm. He played rhythm on the generique of Volte Face. In Congolese music all bass-players and lead guitarist know how to play rhythm. They know it because its the base. Before learning bass or lead, they are forced to master the rhythm guitar first.
