Do y’all think Stino would have succeeded in his music career if he had left Viva la Musica in 1998? Shortly after releasing his solo album Invitation, which featured JB Mpiana, Bozi Boziana and Madilu as guest artists, rumors started spreading that several musicians had left Viva la Musica.

A few weeks later, the news was confirmed by Stino Mubi’s wife, MJ Ngoyi, who was on holiday in Kinshasa at the time. She said that twelve musicians had left, explaining that they were unhappy with the way Papa Wemba no longer gave them attention and mostly performed with Nouvelle Écriture, which was on tour at the time

As with Nouvelle Génération in 1992, the press published articles citing Reddy Amisi at the center of it all, trying to link it to the conflict of Reddy Amisi vs Bendoson. But it later became clear that it was actually just Stino Mubi, Timololo, Alexis Azulino, and Gloria Thukadio, joined by Lidjo Kwempa, who was back in Europe — while the rest decided to stay with Viva la Musica. Reddy Amisi himself who was about to release his solo album Etoile, denied that he had left Viva la Musica.

The departure of Stino and co created a huge a buzz, especially because of the rumors about a supposed conflict between Viva la Musica and Nouvelle Écriture. The new group was called Cour des Grands, named after the album Lidjo Kwempa had released at the time. But after a few months of rehearsing, Papa Wemba received a contract for Zénith de Paris to celebrate his 30 years in music. Wanting to reunite all his bands (Nouvelle Écriture, Molokai, Le Quatro and Viva la Musica “Cour des Grands”), he noticed an imbalance within Viva la Musica and wanted the guys back. Through his staff, they reconciled and eventually returned to Viva la Musica , including Lidjo Kwempa, who had originally left the band in 1992 to form Nouvelle Génération with Awilo Longomba, late Fafa de Molokai, Luciana Demingongo, late Bongo Wende and others. Viva la Musica would get renamed Viva la Musica "Cour des Grands". Together they would record Timololo's solo album Mwana Matebu and performed together at Zénith de Paris (without Gloria, who was absent) and at La Madeleine in Brussels. The guys participated in the Fula Ngenge album as well and later performed at Forest National alongside Molokai, as Nouvelle Écriture was already back in Kinshasa. However, the following Papa Wemba would announce that the upcoming tour would be 100% Nouvelle Ecriture, which would frustrate the guys again and also how Papa Wemba would several times humilate both Stino, Reddy and Gloria in different interviews and press-conferences in 1999 and 2000. Reddy at some point having enough and attacking Papa Wemba very hard in the famouscassette "La Vérite du Siècle".

Thinking about how Stino Mubi’s career went nowhere after his 2001 departure, following the release of Fin d’Exil with Reddy, makes me wonder if he would have succeeded had he taken advantage of the buzz surrounding his 1998 exit. What do y’all think?

I think Stino Mubi would have a modest successful solo career probably similar to Reddy Amisi. He definitely had some potential. Listen to Willy Likayi which he sang with Reddy Amisi. I feel like Willy Likayi is another version of Stino's very successful hit Mista. The rhythm seems similar.
