His strategy works well for him. This guy is known much more than some major stars are known internationally. Several times people who know nothing about Congolese music have asked me if it's Awilo am playing in my car even when am playing koffi Olomide's songs. ;D ;D ;D

The most popular 'authentic' African song in clubs that play 'Afrobeats' is Karolina by Awilo. I am yet to attend an African party where Karolina is not played at some point.

I think his plan is to do music for french speaking audience especially west Africans but he does some decent Congolese rhumba and proper sebene
Here is one good rhumba from is last album featuring Dede Djasko, Soleil Wanga and Junior Embrouille and soloist Ramazani.
