Extra Musica Zangul "La Difference"
-
Ain't even a question Wenge Musica easily ruled the 90's and influenced Extra Musica, for me Wenge could be even better than the real Viva La Musica.
-
Uhhhh :o Wenge better than the Viva La Musica of Emeneya, Dindo Yogo, Esperant, Debaba and Huits Kilo? the band who imposed la S.A.P.E. in the Congolese music-industry? The band who was 5 years in a row the best band of Zaire above Zaiko, Afrisa and OK Jazz and who slaughtered these bands during Fara-Fara's. The band who swept Yoka Lokole and Isifi of Evoloko away from Kinshasa. Te wana, olekisi
-
Can't believe you would ask such a question :o
-
Off course Extra Musica was inspired by Wenge Musica and it's a fact that Wenge Musica was the best. Apart from the likes of Franco and his TPOK Jazz, Papa Wemba in his own capacity, Tabu Ley, Mbilia Bell, Tshala Muana, Kanda Bongoman,Zaiko as a group and other great names,it is Wenge Musica which made a massive impact at home and across the border.
The band Viva never made a big name outside Congo, it was Papa Wemba in his individual capacity. Then we also had Koffi and his Quartier Latin, they tried to beat Wenge but nope,it's Wenge's music which managed to break the international market but Extra did well too,they came with force but they sounded like a photocopy of Wenge Musica.
-
I am hungry so my answer is a two word: wenge musica.

Oui pure et simple, Viva yes had better singers yes but they wasn't the full package or complete like Wenge they took that style to a different dimension especially with dancing and plus their impact so big that groups outside the country copied e.g. Extra Musica who are also very talented but at the end of the day the impact Wenge made I don't think there's many groups that can match with them they were literally the untouchable in their prime simple
-
Can't believe you would ask such a question :o
Wenge Musica is for me also better, but I asked this question because many friends of me from West-Africa says always that Extra Musica is better
-
extra promoted themselves better in west africa,in ivory coast for example they went there much more than wenge and also "advantage" extra had is the name of roga roga which went very popular in west africa through praising him when doing his solo in songs
so roga is a massive star there,treated like a king when going there
-
Some of you all say that Extra copied Wenge, I cannot agree with this at all. When you listen to the sound of Extra Musica it is the most unique of any Congolese band I've ever heard. I dont have to hear any words, just give me the first 30 sec of the song and I can tell its them. Wenge, not so much so. Im looking at this all through the eyes and ears of a non Congolese person living in the States.
I think if you were to go down the line and compare each person/aspect of the band Wenge would be the winner but as a unit Extra was the better band in my opinion. Their downside has and continues to be that the sound hasnt really evolved much since the days of Etat Major. On this side of the atlantic and Im sure across West Africa, Extra's songs are much bigger hits. To this day you can play Etat Major in any African party and people still go crazy...(almost 20years later!). Ive said it before but when it comes to the heavy sound, Extra is the clear winner.
Why are we talking about Viva? ;D
-

That was a hit yes but wenge had many generics to their name.

I'll have to disagree with you my friend....From it's conception, Extra Musica is like the descendent of Wenge Musica 4x4 just like 4x4 copied Victoria!
Just look at their line up
Abilisi=JB or Aimelia
Oxygene=Bula
Guy-guy Fall=Werra
Copa=better version of Tata
Quentin= JB
Rama=Titina
Durel=Fi-Carre(since des can both play Mi and lead)
Roga= Makaba(direction artistic)
Espe= Masela.
Herman= Tata's clown
You saying over 20yrs later Etat Major still has impact, yes I agree I'll even add Losambo! Now, would you compare it with the succes Kalayi,Kin é Bouger,Pile ou Face, Pentagone, Ndombolo and songs like Feux de l'Amour,Filandu, Voyage, Dizoizo, Coco Madimba, Princess Pathy....I'll give one thing to EMZ tho, they knew how to sell themselves world wild compare to WM4x4 who only sold themselves to Zaïrians abroad.
Talking about tge sound, that goes to what one's like to hear. I listen to both side but I can compare the Work that Makaba did in 91(materials that EM were playing at Funerals) to what EM came out with in 97-98...thats like comparing ZAIKO LL of the 80's to Thu Zahina lol
-
In terms of line up, I still wouldnt necessarily agree that they copied them. Again Im young and not Congolese so I dont know the dynamics of the early days so I am speaking purely in terms of what I see today (especially living in the States). Many bands have similar type of line ups, Im referring to the sound the band produces. Extra Musica has one of the most distinctive sounds vs any other congolese band. Today many other Brazza bands copy RogaRoga's sound but it is theirs. When I listen to songs like Chagrin plus plus, Freddy Nelson, Losambo, Obligatoire and even Roga Rogas songs today, no one does it like them. The only downside I see to the group that Wenge has over them in terms of sound is they dont evolve their sound much within an album or even album to album. They havent gone through nearly as many musicians as Wenge and its clans have gone through either.
Roga Roga is not a better guitarist than Makaba but many of his solos can go toe to toe with Makaba's. Durel is better than Ficarre.
-
Thank you Mvulusi for bringing this one, its a topic have heard with my little bro for sometime now and whoever feels this is far fetched is economical with the truth. Am yet to listen to any extra musica song which is a push over. Am not saying that extra were better but I want to insist they were worthy if not better. Roga roga was and is a refined artiste and businessman while Makaba is an excellent artiste, that perhaps could have played part also.
-
for me Extra musica is better than Wenge musica 4x4 . their style of atalakus (chorus) is different from musician of kinshasa. Take an example when ndombolo style or shamkwale style were on fire...extra musica didnt copy such kind of music but wenge did.
Also roga roga is better than alain makaba because roga is not only a soloist but also song writer (most of songs of extra musica composed by himself), he is a dancer, singer, music arrangement ability, leader, and has an abilty of recruit new musician and thats why his bend still active although most of original member already leave the band.

@Roga Roga
You'are wrong it's Wenge Musica themselve who created the ndombolo-style. This style was so hot that even artists like Koffi Olomide and General Defao adopted that style, to stay on the top and it did help them alot because it made artist like Defao and Koffi to get a Legend-status in Africa. It also gived the music from Zaire a extra boost to stay in Africa. Zaiko also adopted that style a little bitby recuiting Papy Cocaine to replicate Tutu Calugi.
About Alain Makaba, for me he's better than Roga Roga, because he's not monotonous as a Lead-guitarist. While sometimes solo from Roga-Roga sounds the same. Alain Makaba revolutionized the seben-style from Zaire, by mixing the Viva-style of Bongo Wende with that of Roxy Tshimpaka. Which inspired Japonais to created the ndombolo-style and Flamme Kapaya the Bueta-Bueta, what everybody is playing now.
Alain Makaba is also a dancer and better singer compare the song Tuna Tina from Anges Adorables or Kaka Pasi from Pile Ou Face with Polemique Generale or Les Goûts et Les Couleurs. Alain Makaba is also able to sing R&B, salsa songs, because he used to do that before the start of concerts of Wenge.
Alain Makaba is beside of that a big arranger, he arranged albums like Feux de l'Amour of J.B. Mpiana, Notre Pere, Bakala Dia Kuba and Fula Ngenge of Papa Wemba, Constat '99 of Aimelia Liass, Wake Up of Koffi Olomide, Mortel Combat of the Mpela brothers and many other albums. Wenge would end up as Super Choc if he didn't arrange all Wenge-albums. He used to get out all energy from the Wenge-members.
Alain Makaba is a complete artist he can play perfectly drums, percecussions, keyboard(he played it the albums Bouger-Bouger, Kin E Bouger, Pleins Feux, Anges Adorables vol. 1 & 2), rhythm guitare and bass-guitare(He used to be a bass-guitarist before and he played it in the Titanic-album and many times after the Wenge-split).
Alain Makaba could be the leader of Wenge Musica if he was a full-time member of Wenge and if he was a guy like Luambo, by forcing his friends out from the band. A thing what Roga-Roga did to many members of Extra-Musica. But I'm happy that Alain Makaba is a cool, intelligent guy who don't like such dirty pranks.That's also why every Wenge-member respects him till today. While guys like Quetin Moyascko, Guy-Guy Fall, Arafat, Herman Ngassaki don't respect Roga-Roga. That incident during the 20th Birthday of Extra Musica, says a lot

What's the begining of this video where he's showing his talent as singer and guitarist at the same time. A thing what Roga-Roga never does.
-
Thats another point I forgot to make in favor of extra musica...I cant think of another atalaku that has a sound like Kila Mbongo.
@RogaRoga, I have to part with you when you dare say that Roga roga is a better guitarist/musician vs Alain Makaba. They Alain's skill level surpasses RR by miles. RR's solos may be catchy but they are very similar and very easy to do. Makaba's work varies and he is a much talented musician as a whole. Ive watch concerts where Makaba plays some of the most difficult things of other musicians and his own with ease perfectly or even better. Then like mbulusi96 said, he arranges and plays other instruments too, and is a better singer. As a total musician, there is not a single Congolese person I can think that is on Makaba's level.
With all that said, Extra as a whole was the better band. ;D
-
No any musician from wenge can be better like roga roga missile

exactly very good analysis makaba was more of a team man who was never interested in leadership whatsoever and like you rightfully say aswell roga inspired himself of makaba,and once again like i said it seems extra got promoted better abroad
when wenge was promoting themselves more in europe,extra did it more at african level
both teams were quite strong but wenge had an edge no wonder extra guys still have massive admiration and respect
extra inspired themselves of wenge which roga himself or many other guys admit

Kiekiekiekie, ;D ;D ;D ::) ::) ::) Firstly welcome to the forum.
Now on your opinion about Roga Roga and Alain Makaba, yes you're right that the atalukus in Brazza do it differently from their counterparts in Kinshasa that is mainly because Brazza and Kin are in different countries, each country has it's own unique culture(ways of doing things).
You say the Wenge's etc copied dances and animation but it is a well known fact that back in the days, all the animation in music was literally the same,just different application by different bands. The term Ndombolo arguably originated or was made popular by clan Wenge.
Finally, your comment about Roga Roga's skills in comparison to Alain Makaba is simply laughable!! Roga Roga and Alain Makaba are both excellent soloists. Alain Makaba is known to have come on the scene and made his name long way before Roga Roga came to be known. Roga Roga came late on the scene, he adopted Alain Makaba's unique style and not only that, Roga Roga also chose a cream coloured steinberger guitar which was Makaba's trademark.
You say Roga Roga not only plays guitar but sings and dances too but do you know how many instruments Alain Makaba plays and played in Wenge Musica and do you know how many songs he composed and arranged as Artistic Director of Wenge Musica. Do you know that Makaba also sang in Wenge and when he went solo?
Yes, Makaba went quiet after leaving Wenge Musica, not because his skills faded, No, he settled abroad and worked ,music was secondary but he later went back to it as a producer in his own recording studio.
In summary, Alain Makaba was the brain of Wenge Musica and the rest of the band members were the other parts of the body, all played their role but each one of them including outsiders know just how much Alain Makaba changed Wenge Musica and just what he can do with music,even Roga Roga himself would laugh if he read your comments. ;D ;D

My two cents, put the two bands toe to toe on stage and Roga roga will top the show...

I need some info here. Who played bass guitar in Titanic? And on which songs did Alain Makaba play solo guitar?
-
Patient Kusangila and Alain Makaba played bass in the Titanic-album. Alain Makaba played the Lead-guitar in Barakuda, Omba, Likala Moto and Champion Kapangala

Extra Musica wins it for me.
I want to look at it as an outsider, someone without background knowledge or allegiance to any of the bands. If you like, someone listening to their songs for the first time without being influenced by the history of the bands because Wenge has a richer history and starts from a point of advantage. I'm going to analyze the bands in sections.
Starting with the songs, it mainly depends on how many times one has listened to the songs or under which circumstances. Both had fantastic and memorable songs. I personally have listened to more of Wenge's songs and I came to love Congolese music through Wenge's music, but I have a special place in my heart for Extra Musica's music, especially with the melancholic introduction of Papy Bastin. I love the album Trop chest Trop. In terms of the songs and albums, its a draw for me.
When it comes to the individual artists and how they played in the songs, it is debatable. Whereas Titina is the more talented drummer, Rama sounded better in Extra's songs and wins here. While Makaba is much more gifted as a soloist, Roga Roga managed to produce excellent solos as well and loses to Makaba only marginally. When it comes to rhythm guitar, Durell wins over Ficare or whoever was playing for Wenge. For me in Congolese music, only Caen Madoka plays more memorable rhythms than Durell did. And Espe's bass always sounded really nice, easily matching Masela or Kusangila, perhaps helped by the fact that Rama was so good on drums. (Many foreign drummers I know struggle to roll drums like Rama does and respect him for that.) So for instrumentalists its Extra 2(rhythm and drums), Wenge 1 (solo) and one draw (bass).
To the vocals and again Extra wins it here for me. Since they came later, they will always be seen as though they were copying Wenge, but even if they did, Extra had better singers. Going down the scale, Herman sounds better than Werra (who I heard being referred to as faux chante in this forum); Doudou Copa is miles better than Adolphe; Oxygen sings better than Blaise Bula. For Wenge JB Mpiana beats Guy Guy Fall or QM; and Amelia's tenor is perhaps better than Papy Jah. Alain Mpela is the better singer but Papy Bastin has more emotion so its a draw here for me. So Extra 3, Wenge 2 with 1 draw.
I don't necessarily mean that whoever wins is a better musician or performer. I'm only judging by how they sounded or played in their songs as my main interaction with these two bands is through listening to their songs. So, as controversial as this may sound: Extra Musica was the better band.

Who played lead in the generique Titanic? Mind mentioning which songs Makaba played bass in? I always thought it was Kusangila throughout.
-
generique was played by burkina faso and basically makaba played bass on most of the songs where he did not play lead while kusangila played a lot of rhythm and bass on the songs played by alain on lead

:o Caien Madoka is the only person who played more memorable rhythms than Durrel Loemba. That's an insult to Do Akongo, Zamwanagana, Lutumba Simaro and many others in the Congolese Music.... ahahaha Ramatoulaye souned better than Titina in albums, I advice you yo listen Kalayi Boeing (version orginale), Voyage, Filandu and Daddet very well.
You can't compare Durrel Loemba to one rhythm-guitarist because beside of Patient Kusangila(played rhythm in Kalayi Boeing, Pleins Feux, Anges Adorables and Pentagone) who is originally a bass-guitar player there were many original rhythm-players in Wenge who didn't play more than 2 albums in Wenge. Guys like Djolina who played in the unreleased EP of Wenge from 1986, Bouger-Bouger and created rhythms from the Kin E Bouger-EP and Pleins Feux, Collegien Zola(who played in the Kin E Bouger-album, but wasn't credited), Fiston Zamwangana(who played on Feux de l'Amour and Titanic and who had the potential to become the greatest rhythm-player of his generation like his dad in Zaiko).

got to say that these solos made by roga roga go toe to toe with certain of makabas solo

By more memorable I don't mean better technically or more musically complex. I just mean that it stays in your memory longer. An example is Flame Kapaya's solos which are complex and sometimes impossible to execute but fade away from memory quickly, contrasted with Burkina Faso's which are simple, catchy, memorable. You just need to listen to Trance music and notice how four or five musical notes are turned into memorable melodies. So, to my point: Durrel Lomba's rhythms are more memorable that those of Wenge.
I did mention that Titina is a better drummer, but I was analyzing the songs and how the drums sounded overall. I must admit that the drumming in Dadet is the best in any rumba song, but then again Titina was not well quantized throughout that song.

muvulus if you want to the creativity of durell ove fi-carre listen the whole album of confirmation especially song like ziya, angela , denide or kende surely you will change your mind iver durell.

@Roga-Roga,
Maitre Fi-Carre did never played rhythm, he played mostly solo and mi-solo and second I didn't say that Durrel hasn't more creativity than all Wenge-rhythm players,. The thing that I said is that you can not compare Durrel Loemba to any Wenge rhythm-player because none of them played more than one album, the only person who played more than one album is Patient Kusangila, who is originally a bass-player and not a rhythm-player. It's not for nothing that he stopped with playing rhythm-guitar and restarted to playing the bass-guitar after the Wenge-split and during Zenith '99.

Durel was allowed to shine a bit more in Extra's older albums. Listen to songs like Chagrin Plus Plus, Djeu le etenel etc. When he became lead when Extra split his sound was pretty good too.
I think the argument mvulsusi96 made about Caien Madoka and DUrel can be argued about RogaRoga and Alain Makaba. I think Roga's solos stick better like that from Etat Major, Losambo, Chagrin Plus and even the stuff from today. Makaba is the better skilled and complex player.
-
they dont respect because of his self-fish character. do not attack him because of his character but respect him due to his talent in song writing, singing, playing guitar, leading other , etc but for me roga roga is better than makaba also extra musica bpbl is better than wenge musica bcbg
