Ataluku Fusée de Guerre and soloist Tolbert Solo giving us extracts of Balle de Match.
Tolbert is son of Sec Bidens. He says BCBG is the first band he's playing for but has played on many songs as a session artist and cites his work with Kabosé, Baby Ndombe, Marie Misamu and even on King Kester's last album etc
He says he doesn't have any particular one idol soloist but many including Makaba, Manuaku, Dr Nico, Mboka Liya, Pathy Moleso, Ficarre and most of the well known soloists. He's asked about the current leading soloists and he says he gets on well with them and says they play well but he has challenged them to step up their game because of late the solo has gone down, singers and atalukus are the ones praised much so it's time soloists put in more effort to compliment the other musicians in songs so their work must be exceptional all the time. He says he gets on with Ferre's Charly Solo, Fally's Alvarito Solo, Werrason's Arc en Ciel, Indice of Wazekwa's band and many others but he fears no one of them and says he's been trained by the best and Makaba himself gave him the thumbs up at a recent concert and people will discover him and his style which has been influenced by many top soloists as mentioned and he calls it ''Tolbernization''
He says JB Mpiana gave chance to the full band on Balle de Match so all of them have played on the album including the other new soloist Reagan Solo and the legendary Maitre Ficarre Mwamba their elder. He hints that the album will be out in time for the festivities this year.

I didn't say JB Mpiana want to be famous as Fally, I said that if JB Mpiana and Wenge BCBG, especially, with the work of Tolbert and Fusèe could be as famous as Fally, because JB Mpiana is well known in Congo and in some parts of Africa but not internationally wide known as Fally, why? Because JB Mpiana's laziness in the last years made the people sick of waiting, in fact if you see people had to wait 5 years for balle de match, and is not out yet, even though he released some singles, in a country like Congo where, album are dropped every year. Period

Fally is known internationally more simply because of his type of music and his collaborations with other artists, he does a different genre to that of JB Mpiana who sticks to African music and is way older than Fally. One of Fally's idols is JB Mpiana so before you start insulting great artists defendingCongo, first reflect on the implications of your words. Yes, JB Mpiana is lazy musically because he is purely a singer, the man makes his money outside music and he funds a lot of these youngsters around so it's not like he just sits at home farting all day,he has things which are more important than music in his life,he is not a youngster, in his time ,he travelled the world like Fally and made his name and he is living on his past glory,people are always eager to hear his music because he has made his name already.

Where did you see I've insulted Congo I've just said the truth, and the fact JB Mpiana's oldness is not the fact he is not famous like Fally, look at Koffi, look at Selfie the song went international and Koffi is older than JB Mpiana, but Koffi is not lazy like JB and in fact even though is more than 20 years that he is in the music business he is internationally known people everywhere knows him just like his musical son Fally, JB wasted the potential of him and his Orchestra during this years and Balle De Match is a taste of how powerful could be him if he had cobstance and if he weren't so lazy, how can you say I insulted Congo? Sly Mampeza may be throwing so many words in different directions but what he is saying is simple. JB Mpiana was more popular than he is today because of his lazyness in producing top notch predictable and reliable albums supported by good artists like we are seeing in Fusee and Tolbet. And if I am lying Sly, recently you agreed that there is some air and energy pumped in bcbg.
Being famous does not mean playing Afro-pop or Western music.....its the quality of the music/videos, marketing and most importantly, band attractiveness. Tell me if JB didnt have most of these qualities during Titanic and TH. He did until slowly he started losing quality artists in the name of bula....makaba....titina.....mukena.....biku....mboka liya.....caludji....moleso etc. The marketing by music lables was also good then. Then he remained with mediocre artists.....a friend and marketing manager (roger ngandu)....til this day. Look at the music during the last 15yrs?

EMO, JB Mpiana does not produce music to be popular but to satisfy his loyal fans,that is my only argument,the rest of what the fella has said is unnecessary. Am a loyal fan of JB Mpiana and off course I know his weaknesses and strengths. This quoted statement is what I found disturbing ''.....JB Mpiana could be at the same level of Fally's fame.'' I have closed my case. Not every musicians out there plays music to be popular,the same lazy JB Mpiana is the same man that is loved and respected by other musicians young and old because of the things he does away from cameras including funding so many of these musicians around. He will not produce R&B rhumba or childish songs like ''Selfie'' so that they go viral and he gets famous, he has gone past that level.

The point am trying to make and which is being missed is that is JB Mpiana looking for fame,is his intention to get famous like Faly,Ferre ,Koffi and Werrason on an international level or he is content. JB Mpiana and most of his musicians when interviewed and constantly asked why it takes long for BCBG to release albums, the answer has always been the same, they want to release quality music to satisfy loyal fans,it's not about fame or business for them but having music that people will stand up and dance to with their partners etc not what will become so popular and play the world over and get them some money,BCBG despite having a poor marketing strategy has good ethos and reputation that is why they remain relevant today despite the same laziness we all refer to.

yes popularity of course but i think there are various types of "popularity", simple example koffi werra and fally can rarely accept to spend 3 months without massive spotlight,buzz or whatever we can call it, ferre sometimes joins that list, then you have jb,ya jossart,papa wemba for example who are more into having much more concerts than most artists in kinshasa, touring abroad without tuning it into an event... the two types are popular for different reasons and with different targets,and the target of any artist can be seen in how he deals with his career,but if i understand what most people including myself say about jb he's "entered the other type of popularity too early",not so?

we are actually saying the same thing bro,there is a mix of flaws like you rightly mentioned and a "i have nothing more to prove" mentality from jb and he says it openly on tv that he is not out there anymore to prove something to anybody which is why he does pretty much what he wants when he wants,and he makes up for the frustration it may cause to his musicians of taking much more time to do things with his excellent relationship skills
obviously bro with titina afande and co there'd be a brighter jb since they got more personality charisma and experience than the current crop,just as much as throwing back in maison mere kapaya or bill or ferre for example would impact on werra thats totally normal
no wonder the congolese music in general has gone down with the ego issues which lead to leaders wanting less and less charismatic guys around and those guys accepting less and less to keep being under a leader

There is better animation on 13eme Apotre ,even the animation ''Ah Yesu'' which Boguys Bompema first started on his solo album is better than the ekoti te animation,selfie makes no sense really,it's just a play song no wonder comedians are on it too,it's just proved popular because ''selfies'' are trending now.

Selfie is a pure commercial song it doesn't say anything but it is really funny to listen, this is why is so popular, and is modern, that is why is so famous, it is like Mascara, which was saying something but was also a funny a song with Fabregas fast style speaking and the Ya Mado dance.
Kindoki and Puissance/Ngunzama the two generique are better than Selfie and Mascara, but it doesn't have a video so people can only download it and can't know the dance if they don't go to watch the live performance on youtube, is a little thing but is costing JB the success he deserved, because honestly if Kindoki and Puissance/Tengama or Balle De Match had a video instead of the shitty petite ya quartier you would see JB making the same or maybe more views of selife and so on

The maxi single album JB Mpiana released was for his fans to have something to listen to for the new years celebrations as the full album ''Balle de Match'' is behind schedule, JB Mpiana listened to the cries of his fans and went into studio and within a few months came out with a fantastic maxi single. Had he not released, people would still have condemned him as usual. JB Mpiana is not the first Congolese musician to release an album without any video,others have done it before. JB Mpiana's business model is not ideal in a competitive market but he has a niche market of loyal fans who still wait for him to release albums and when he announces concerts, people still turn up in numbers so he is content with his style and i don't think he is bothered much about producing catchy stuff but quality stuff that people will listen to for many years to come, that is his style and we just have to appreciate it,if he was useless he would have sunk a long time ago like others who are now in oblivion like Manda Chante, Blaise Bula and even Alain Makaba. Let's give credit to JB Mpiana, he is a star in his own right and his formula has worked,yes, it would be nice if he can adjust and become modern with his marketing but nope,we are all different and he is not an exception.

I mean how on earth can JB leave out four videos for only four songs? This maxi single is superb. Look here, small boys like robhinio, tabu peguy, brigade sabati, kevin mola, etc are releasing videos for the shit songs.....why not JB? A man your say is up there already? Even though Cellulaire has been on a bad behaviour with JB Mpiana lately for the fact of his travel to Europe faking an illness, he will still have his song on Balle De Match, and what about Abraham Mignon? Did he released his solo Album or we still have to wait?

i saw an interview of roger ngandu saying they did not put too much energy in promoting maxi because balle de match was shortly after... but clips have been shot already,and were meant to be released from tomorrow but it has been delayed for whatever reason( maybe censorship?)

Mudala,you have been to school and i believe you understand English very well so i don't expect you to mince my words. This maxi single was not supposed to be there in the first place,what was being prepared was Balle de Match, this maxi single was done in a rush and there was no time for videos,the videos have now been done and i think we may have them anytime soon so i don't know what the big deal is with you fellas. Do you know how long it's taken all those boys to prepare their music and videos?

I have been to school and thats why i argue against the hypothesis that jb can only impress his loyal fans in DRC and does not need to work harder to break to the international market. And that this is why he takes long to create quality. JB takes long because he knows the team he has/had....could not risk spontaneous albums. Its a weak team but hopefully with the new entrants..we will see change.

I did not say ''JB can only impress his loyal fans in DRC'' and whatever else you have said, I have consistently said JB Mpiana seems content with his business model and it appears he does not see the need to drop albums every year just to stay in the limelight or get ''famous.''
From an outsiders and business point of view, it may appear that he is lazy or his business model isn't good, what we can certainly say is that his business and marketing strategy to be precise is extremely poor but any of this is not as a result of his knowing that he has a weak team, that is just preposterous mudala.
We can conclude that JB Mpiana takes an average of about 4 years to release albums but in between,he releases singles and usually with videos, the trend now is that musicians release at least the video of the generique and one rhumba from an album to help with its promotion but JB didn't do any of that as this maxi single was done in a rush to drop it in time for the festivities, let's just respect the fact that JB at least listened to his fans and gave them something,immediately after that he started shooting videos for it, we have seen some picture shots of the video set so am sure we will see the videos soon,maybe in time for valentines or something.
What is better, to release albums every year and they go with the wind as they are poorly arranged or take time to craft an album which will make people dance forever. Look at Koffi and Werrason, how many of their albums have been a flop as a result of their business models, plenty, it doesn't look good,we can judge that they are going down simply because of the poor quality of their music as the albums fade out within months of being released so what is the point. Go to your music library and see how long it took for Wenge Musica BCBG 4X4 to release albums and in between releases,they never released any singles, the old Wenge albums still make people dance today because the guys perfected the albums prior to release.
