Congolese Music / Re: CONGOLESE MUSICIANS AND MARKETING
« on: June 29, 2025, 11:19 »
Marketing is normally carried out by so called "Band Manager",  while musicians are allowed to focus on their artistical work.  So the question is do congolese groups have Band Managers?.

I watched a program on music streaming and I came to understand why some popular groups stopped producing new albums.  Take Spotify as example. Spotify pays about 0.004$/streaming (30 seconds and above). Of that, 30% goes to Spotify and the remaining 70% goes to digital music  distributors, right holders and finally the artist. Let's say a song had 1,000,000 streaming per given window,  this is equivalent pay of 4,000 US$ to be split between Spotify,  Digital Distributors, Right Holders and the Artist(s). Therefore,  performing live concerts with a band can be more attractive than producing new albums which is expensive. Actualy I came across few top artists who have pulled their songs from streaming platforms.

I was curious on how musicians, or bands get payed on concerts. I came across one YouTube channel that provided an insight though it's not always straightforward. What I have learned, and as an example, a band can charge $300 to $750/band member/song, depending on how popular the group is. So say a band that has 10 members , charging at 300$/band member/song,  and playing 10 songs for a one hour concert would ask for $30,000 as minimum provided the promoter, or organiser covers other incurred cost such as transport,  logistics, hotel, food, stage graphic, sound engineer, tax...etc. If however the deal is such that the band needs to cover other incurred costs, then the asking price from the band or band manager would be ($30,000 + other incurred cost ). That's why having too many members in the band is not justifiable economically. Now Imagine a band that has 10 singers, 10 dancers and at least 5 musicians, say a total of 25 members.  In that case, the band may consider squeezing their minimum asking price to only $50/band member/song, and if the band has to cover othe incurred cost, they will definitely go for cheapest option like taking airline that does not serve food nor beverages, booking bed and breakfast instead of hotels, going for poor quality sound system,.......etc. This will degrade reputation of any band seeking to raise its bar.

Right at the bottom, I see a name Mayaula Mayoni, who was a recording artist, composer and a vocalist in DRC. He was once a member of TP Ok Jazz where he wrote lyrics of a famous song "Cherie Bondowe"

Video quality is ok. As for the music, I cant really comment since each individual has different taste and opinion about music.

Indeed the number was based on old census that I glanced through in the internet some years back, but was still in the back of my head. 2024 census though shows much lower numbers. A number that is still good enough to support their own artists.

There are about 2,000,000 (2 million) Nigerian diasporas in the UK, and about 500,000 (half a million) in USA. So I'm not surprised to see one of their artist fill in a big concert hall in the UK or USA. Congolese music is popular and more entertaining because of the use of live band with professional musicians. However, the combatants have caused a lot of problems to Congolese artist who were to perfom in Europe.

Thanks bro. I think you explained it very well and it's clear now.
