Evoloko Nkumu could have done more things in his carreer

I think he became big too young. He never was able to angle himself properly because of that and it destroyed his career.

His friend Gina Efonge influenced him (na cadre ya ideologie). Evoloko was very shy before Gina came. But when Gina joined Zaiko he went to give him 'ideologie' (Saying that he must not salute everyone, ignoring people even if he knows them, etc.). The same Gina influenced his older brother Wemba a little bit with that, but he just followed the movement. From that moment Gina created with Evoloko, Wemba & Mavuela in 1971 inside Zaiko "Institut du Savoir Ideologique pour la formation des Idoles" , which is means Institute of Ideological Knowledge for the Formation of Idols (Ifisi). Excluding Nyoka Longo & Bimi Ombale who seen as "ba Yuma" and Gina saying that Nyoka could not talk with him never join Isifi since that he comes from N'djili, while he comes from Lemba and study in Kalina (Gombe). With Zaiko having 3 bands until 1974, when Evoloko, Wemba, Bozi & Mavuela decided to leave Zaiko and form Isifi Lokole.(Gina was since 1973 ill).

The behavior of Gina & Evoloko towards their own bandmembers during their solo-careers and people close to them made them not succeed in their careers. Otherwise they would have been big stars, but despite that they really influenced the youngstars of that generation. Wemba and Emeneya (who was Gina's student) went further with that and added "La SAPE" in that ideology

It seems that Gina was very influential, from Wemba to Kester. He really birthed the attitude of the average congolese musician today.

As I said, he was overvalued by many Congolese press. He was not and never was the best singer. For some reason, they wanted to make him more than he actually was. He started to make "real music" in the mid 1980s and late 1980s but then nobody cared to talk about him anymore.

overvalued by the press ? I think that you didn't witness his career. Evoloko was the most hated artist of the press in Zaire. Back in 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974 and 1975 he was the best singer of Zaïre. Wemba who was older than him became his fan and started to change his singing-style a little bit because of him. The picture I posted above is comes from 1974 with the press critizing him. His best songs were in the 70's and early 80's. His songs weren't so good anymore like in the past from the moment when he became the only leader of Langa Langa Stars in 1985. Look the interviews of King Kester Emeneya, Gina Efonge, Papa Wemba and Pepe Felly Manuaku when they are talking about him.
