What I learnt from this interview is that recruiting former bandmembers in shoot-off bands only create more problems. Look how late Likinga Redo only created problems after joining Zaiko Familia Dei and also late Mbuta Mashakado. The same with Suzuki in Academia. It's mostly better to stay like that when creating shoot-off bands and only recruiting new musicians instead of associating former bandmembers.
I was surprised to hear that Zaiko Familia Dei went to Australia with Kanda Bongo Man in 1990. Other bands would have made alot of noise about it. late Simon Ndjonang caused much trouble in our music what he did to Wenge Maison Mère, he also did it with Zaiko Familia Dei, by sending a fax to the American consulate in Canada, that they were not the real Zaiko which made them seeing their visa's for US getting denied. Ilo Pablo really loved Familia Dei, other artists would have decided in their situation stayed in Canada. It's a shame that they didn't capitalize on the succes their album l'Oiseau Rare had in Kinshasa instead of returning back they prefered to tour in USA. But I can understand, almost everyone dreamed in that era dreamed to get in the United States, because of the movies, series and videos that we were seeing. I noticed that almost all artist say that it's more lucrative to perform in Brussels and Paris than in the United States. Does matolo not work there ? Apart from Soukous Stars, who were based abroad, Big Stars of Defao and Zaiko Familia Dei are the bands that toured in the most states in the US.
