It has been 25 years since singer Dindo Yogo passed away. Also known as “La Voix Cassée”, Dindo Yogo stood out for his unique singing voice. His real name was Théodore Djangi, and he was born on December 30, 1955, in the village of Lokutu in Tshopo province. He spent his childhood and teenage years in Kinshasa. He was first part of the group Macchi, where he became the main star and enjoyed his first successes. In 1974, he released the hit song Lola Muana, dedicated to his son. In 1975, he left to form his own band, Etumba na Ngwaka, alongside guitarist Nseka Huit Kilos and Lofanga, where he also achieved success. However, at some point, he decided to pause his music career, only to restart it in 1978 when he joined Viva la Musica of Papa Wemba.Within Viva la Musica, he formed the powerful vocal attack “Indu Shakara” with King Kester Emeneya, Esperant Kisangani, Fafa de Molokai (later joined by Debaba). In 1981, Dindo Yogo, Esperant Kisangani, and Djuna Djanana left Viva la Musica to form Langa Langa Stars with former Zaiko members Evoloko Lay, Bozi Boziana, and Djo Mali. They were later joined by Kester Emeneya, Patcho Star, Nseka Huit Kilos, and Beniko Popolipo. However, Emeneya, Patcho Star, and Nseka Huit Kilos eventually returned to Viva after the intervention of Franco Luambo Makiadi, who had been contacted by Papa Wemba, accusing label manager Verckys Kiamuangana of destroying his band.In Langa Langa Stars, Dindo Yogo became one of “Les 6 Patrons” alongside Evoloko, Bozi Boziana, Djuna Djanana, Esperant Kisangani, and Djo Mali. The following year, guitarist Roxy Tshimpaka joined, forming “Les 7 Patrons.” With Langa Langa Stars, Dindo Yogo released several hit songs, including Tantine Betena, Nzembo Elengi, Likombe, and Azanga. Unfortunately, Les 7 Patrons did not last long due to leadership disputes. Esperant Kisangani was the first to leave in 1983, followed by Bozi Boziana and Roxy Tshimpaka, who went on to form Choc Stars with Ben Nyamabo. Djuna Djanana and Djo Mali would later join Choc Stars as well, leaving Dindo Yogo with only Evoloko. In 1985, Dindo Yogo left Langa Langa Stars to join Zaiko Langa Langa. Just as when he had joined Viva la Musica, some doubted whether he would fit into Zaiko. However, he proved everyone wrong by releasing the hit song Mokili Echanger. Within Zaiko, he became an important member and often had the opportunity to sing lead on songs such as Mofiti, Nyongo Ekeseni, and Flora. He also had the freedom to release solo albums while in Zaiko. In 1988, after the split of Zaiko Langa Langa, Dindo Yogo became chef d’orchestre of the new formation Zaiko Nkolo Mboka. In 1991, he left Zaiko to form his own band, Ngwaka Aye.In 2000, upon returning to Kinshasa for rest (He was recovering after becoming a victim of poisoning) and in the process of reforming Ngwaka Aye, Dindo Yogo sadly passed away at the age of 44.
