I pray to God that Congo can be a functional country where the quality of life is to where people don’t have to run away in Europe or America. It’ll also help if musicians actually get paid decently. Until then this will always happen.

To make matters worse, they have families (parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, and grandparents) that are depending on them as a stable source of income. Since the 1980s, Congo has wrestle with serious structural proverty as a result of rampant corruption and political instability that stifles the economic growth that can provide a healthy job market. The best protected spaces for local workers in Congo are middle-to-high level ranking jobs in law enforcement, public education, or healthcare. Outside of that, you're hustling to make ends meet unless you're related to someone influencial to help you out. That's why some Congolese people pursue music; they may love the art form, but often it's a vehicle to arrive and run away in Europe. At least there's a social safety net in Europe, whatever money you send back is a huge help, because the purchasing power of the foreign currency in Congo is significant.
