I read your topics and sometimes I see things such as artistic director and so on. Wikipedia also tends to list what are called "Chefs" and "Cheftaine" .

May you guys please explain how these roles and many other roles come about in a group, what a person in that role does exactly and whether they get a raise in salary as opposed to other ordinary band members. Thanks !

Chef - Person in charge when the fondé is not around. As you know most the leaders go on extended stays in Europe, so the chef is in charge of holding weekly practice sessions and carrying out discipline from the boss, in absentia .

The chef will hear grievances and suggestions and report to the boss. The chef will also collect libanga money and distribute salary, if trusted. In many cases, the only time the leader interacts with band members is at concerts and in the studio. This is to ensure the leader has a certain mystique. Even when the band has meals before a concert the artist eats in the VIP section, while the band sits outside on cinder blocks to eat.

Chieftain - Mid-range manager, typically in charge of certain groups of the band. Chieftain for the guitarists, chieftain for the dancers, and so forth.

Artistic director - Person in charge of integrating new dances and animations for concerts and albums. At times artistic director role can be used interchangeably with choreographer. Example, Fally from '01-'05 played a big role on the dances and theme of songs in Quartier latin; now you could say Cindy plays a big role. Zimbabwe is another example, '99-'03. 

Artistic directors are often responsible for album titles and theme of certain songs. They are also the ones to add fuel to the fire when artists are in conflict. More often than, not the artistic director is young, which enables the older leader adapt to the times with the latest dances.

In regards to salary, it's actually only in recent years that band members got stable salaries - through monthly payment and/or direct deposit. They still make relatively little money; less than you'd think.

Most band members depend on money, clothes, even houses and cars they get from donors in exchange for a song in the donor's name or their name being called repeatedly at a concert.

totally spot on,but the problem of salary will never ever change for the simple reason that even the leaders depend on donors and sponsors,and musicians from groups have big big demands which they surely wont even have if they were doing a different job

the artistic director is sometimes given just based on experience and age in the group so when one leaves his assistant automatically takes it for example titina and jules kibens,he is like an assistant to arranger in studios and involved in soundchecks,choreography does not depend directly from artistic director,it depends from dancers and choreographers and then the artistic director assesses it all to pick what to use in clips and concerts: there are various types of choreographers,there are guys like manchester mainly working with women,guys like lambio lambio who can create full dance shows,in some groups like bcbg there is no official choreographer but rather  a group of guys doing that job together,there is the case of wazzkwa who creates most of the group's dances but has two choreographers who contribute aswelll
discipline guy is also one of the  longest serving guys,he'd notice that x or y breached the group's rules then report to chef d'orchestre who takes it to boss who organized a reunion where he makes decisions,or in some cases  the leaders trust his chefs so they deal with discipline issues themselves
 vice president is much more of symbolic role,we have had example of montana in quartier latin just as to tell him he was as important as the chef d'orchestre(and was a smart way to get rid of him aswell but thats another topic lol), then the cases of genta and heritier who never publicly admitted that role but had it,or there was adolphe in 4X4 but adolphe was never ever involved in any decision making in 4X4
for recruitment there is too much cases let's say apart from tests at rehearsal hallss the group leaders trust their chiefs when they introduce somebody

To simplify and clarify, the Artistic Director is in charge of the technical side of putting the music together ie marrying up lyrics/vocals with the music and who sings what and when (to some extent)or musical arrangement in rehearsals, live performances and when recording in studio. The Artistic Director also works with the Studio Arrangers and Sound Engineers on the mixers. The Artistic Director is not a choreographer, choreography is mainly restricted to making of dance routines, most of the top bands in Congo have internal guys and sometimes bring in known outsiders like Lambio Lambio mentioned above by Archos who is reportedly helping Wenge BCBG, Lambio was Viva La Musica's longest serving choreographer and also helped with recruitment of not only dancers but singers.

The Chef, means Chief, and there are many in a band for instance there is Chef du Orchestre or Chief of Orchestra or Staff, this is mainly the band leader/President's number two or Chief of Staff or sometimes number three as some bands have a Vice President. The Chief is like the Operations Manager and reports to the boss.

You also have chef de discipline , Chef de répétition(rehearsals) etc so when someone is called Chef in Congolese music they could hold some title as described above. Sometimes the female dances also have their own cheftain as you have put it.(chief).
