Academia's debut I'll give a review hopefully for tonight, I'd like to point out how much significance that album had at them peak times.

 until today i am pissed about how they threw away such a golden opportunity by turning into a kinshasa group again with all the bad mentality which goes with it,what a massive waste

it was the departure of bouro the group went downhill sanction will forever remain one of my favourite albums I remember me and my cousins used to dance to the generique

A bit off topic, but I think Viagra is the best Congolese sophomore album (JB's Toujours Humble also up there) - less bass boost so the sebenes were somewhat less striking, but amazing acoustic quality, and the rhumbas were top-notch - taking stylistic notes from the greats of the past. Love Story, Certitude, Zabalumbu (wenge BCBG-inspired  imo), Tres Fort, & Coalition - solid jems.

 Very nostalgic and yes its very unfortunate the group fell apart, but thats the ebb-and-flow of African bands.

  Ok today I'll release it give me an hour I've got so many articles I think to do for example an ode to weird singers which I might make today but Sanction the review I might rush it give me an hour thanks! 

Faux Patron clear mock at the president of Quartier Latin. To be honest at the time polemics and controversy was completely blown at of proportion but the wars were productive compared to current day war affairs, an excellent blend of hip-hop, reggae and soukous, the rappers of Neg Marrons impressed along with singer Marie-Jose and the sebene timeless Lebou Kabuya and Pathy Bass convincing, Somono & Mboshi killer duo (esepcially Mboshi on Tata Mwasi Nzola) and Djudju Chet the best drummer of all time showing his quality as usual. (Note: Kris Ndjora known today as Kisndjora got a shout-out  ). clear 10.


Now Sort I'm sure if Koffi heard this song he would of took it on it Attentat and made it his by purpose  , I mean this tune is so mellow fanatastic, mature, melodic, smooth, astounding and accomplished, from to start to beginning and funny problem is that the whole album dominated by sebene's but they proved and convinced us how rumba important rumba's an absolute high quality composition, Sam Tshintu sang fantastically along with invite Marie-Jose Gibon. Now Modogo & Bouro complimented with each other so well combining together well, Acoustic Guitarist Lebou Kabuya smashed it even with the short distortion partition historically and not forgetting Phillipe Guez input also. This reminds of Ngobila and a Lutumba song but with slight different touch of young fresh blood. Now 5th Generation artist this how you make rumba's take this an example, Hat's off BANG on 10! no argument.


100 Ans gives us a clear 7/7 structure meaning the song will have a short rumba, build-up and then sebene for me that best structure in our music. Now Quartier Latin Academia were literally inform to wrong on this song, Modogo this guy has so much of a unique style I haven't seen a singer close to him with what he does his mellow, controlled, unique and strange but so good, efficient and experienced, Sam Tshintu Che Guevara L'Homme des 100 Ans sang in his unique what like with him he can't go to low or high a bit like Alain Mpela but his voice is fantastic and he showed on his vocal during the build-up and Bouro Grand Chanteur but underrated here a younger him singing well and the sebene 10/10 Somono & Mboshi smashing it as usual. Lebou Kabuya during the end was his guitar work addictive damn the guy can play lead so well and even Charly Mbonda's partition wonderful and Djudju Chet this guy hit each piece without no fault certainly the best drummer (no wonder why his always looked up on by young drummers). SDF, starts of very well and I appreciated Mike Evian's rhythm work the guy certainly forgotten about what he did here respect. This song had more of a rumba feel and the songwriting clear picture of the situation of being deceived in love, the main chorus sang well and the vocals of the trio (Sam, Bouro & Modogo) 10/10.............. I'm tired of writing please just listen especially if you never knew about this album or group listen to them you can make a fair review thanks  (10/10) and sebene 10!.



My favorite song of the whole album, "Mamu" Please I will take my time explain to you fellow bloggers of how hard it is to replicate traditional music of Congo DR. In Congo DR there many ethnic tribes for instance Bakongo, Bangala, Baswahili and many others but this composition is based on people from Kasai (Baluba), Luba music is highly dominated by traditional percussion and minor guitar partitions and often sang in completely weird way. You have artist like Tshala Muana and Bayuda du Congo who display this naturally and obviously artist in Kasai a quite unique style of music which also gives feeling of Reggae at times, just some example of them.







Just few reference's. But Quartier Latin Academia has made the best ever recreation of Traditional Music I have not heard of any artist before whether JB Mpiana, Werrason, Koffi, Fally Ipupa, Ferre Gola and others of past or present. Totally unbelievable how the demonstrated this from the start to end, drumming fantastic and tribal as ever, percussion were minimal but with effects of maximum effectiveness that played major in this song, the bass by Pathy Bass explainable too subtle and clean. Now the singing top top notch professionally harmonized and the complimentary is unreal and Sam's vocal OH MY DAYS! I haven't heard Sam sing will as well that before I mean it was short and sweet (he gave if a Muluba man singing which he is  ) and Lebou Kabuya starts well but once he changes to the next partition OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, Welcome to Kasai, Somono singing even goes well with the chorus and Bouro hits notes awesomely I mean my original CD of Sanction has been scratched because of me repeating that part of the change like how did you do that so well, at the end YOOOOOO! even better. For me this song over exceeded expectations of a straight 15/10! listen this song give you own thoughts, thanks! 

 

Hi-Tele My favorite rumba-sebene song, introduction good, after few minutes the singing gets better and better and sebene 10/10. I don't know I just write alot but listen to this song yourself and you'll the talent, the chorus EHHH!!, Kalayi Ngangu (even better)!!!.

(Bonus):

I can't even speak I'm speechless just listen to this quality, Geco Mpela's vocal (call and response) wow  I'm the harmony and melody was too special and the way Pathy Bass joined in classic. (short extract of how good they are). 

Sanction. Impressed throughout even with songs such as Exil D'Amour, Otan and plenty others, I have assurance that even listener will be entertained with quality exhibited in to this album, instruments played at an total high level, content easy to understand of course if you understand, collaborations daring and infinitive Neg Marrons', Marie-Jose Gibon of Kassav, Djudju Chet and Phillipe Guez also effective, each song if this album means something not track-listed for the sake of it but really each song having depth of it's own. Excellence was displayed in every form sebene's, rumbas, hip-hop/soukous fusion and most importantly ethnic tribal music an album that needs shown as example to every artist and certainty the best album of an off-shoot group no off-shoot group has made an better than this even Les Marquis' Miracles can't stand near too this, in the Year of 1999 before the millennium albums were completely fire and groundbreaking and breathtaking you have Attentat of Former Boss of the Academia Koffi Olomide releasing Attentat in the same day as Sanction but Academia gave the boss a completely knock-out artistically the album weighs Attentat incomparably with any disscusion, Madilu's Pouvoir a fantastic album but Sanction beats it, Solola Bien probably the best if not on of the best of Wenge Musica Maison Mere and also memorable classic of Congolese music but in my opinion Sanction has something that Solola Bien hasn't that class is just missing in Solola Bien but Sanction has, it leaves it to Fula Ngenge of Papa Wemba's again a classic album but still Sanction just by a fraction beats it. Simple 1999's best album and certainly the one of Best Albums of All time why? 3 Singers, 3 Guitarists, 2 Animators and  a Percussionist 11 members created something as if 49 people participated but this album was done almost perfectly, I gave Titanic 8.9, I have to give Sanction 9.5/10 maybe even 10 but that's a bit too much but 9.7/10 for me this album rests with the greats.

mike evian was not even really a rumba guitarist or lets say he was an early version of what olivier tshimanga is today,playing with artists of various continents(far less involved in rumba than olivier though)
if you take sanction and titanic you'll notice how great music can be when done by group of 10-15 max people highly versatile and complementary,not like today with bands of 80 people(i picked both and not solola bien as an example because both were done with just 4 and 3 singers)

I would give this album a 8.1/10. No I don't think it's fanatic thing you know, I think this album is quality especially and the circumstances the album was made under makes it even difficult like for example the first group to sign with a official french label, 11 members completely a whole album, Maison Mere, Viva & Quartier Latin were already big big groups with bigger backing and fan base so Academia had more of a harder job plus concerning hits yes that's a factor but talking for artistic quality Sort is better than Sans Anesthesie or Maria that's not really important that's more of a commercial factor that artistic acclaim in that sense commercially you're completely right and Viagra top album and I don't think it needed any rectifications. 

Excellent review. When I decide to listen to this album, it goes on and on for about a week.

It was a considerably small unit but they produced a very good album. It saddens me that they broke up at their peak.

This was a very good album, good melodies,lyrics, Sebene and signing and animation.

This was a group that was going to give some big shots in the industry a good run for their money but they couldn't achieve that.  I guess individual interests overshadowed their passion and the common aim/ goal(s) of the group.
