JB Mpiana’s song Zadio Kongolo was in 2008 a huge succes in Kinshasa and was voted as second song of the year behind Koffi’s Sixieme Chantier at NdulAwards. People who had difficulties with sleepin, nightworkers and those who liked  partying every night were called “Zadio” due to Djino’s vocal “mbutu”.

The song ended up by getting nominated at the first edition of MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMA) in 2008. Which made me wonder  if the song was succes outside DRC, Congo Brazzaville and the Lingala-speaking community in Angola.









Also were did the MAMA’s go ? Will they ever return back ? I was a little bit sad that they hype around Kora Awards disappeared and them slowly disappearing. But MAMA managed to be prestigious like them. However, they ended up by getting a hiatus from 2011 to 2013 and after 2016 it became again quit around them. They announced a comeback for 2019 in Uganda and said that it was quit around them, because of wanting to create more categories and concentrate better on the music of the continent. The funny thing is that for edition for Uganda there was still the same categories like that of 2016 and no new ones being added. The edition of 2019 ended up by getting  postponed because of organisations threatening to boycott them because of many being against Museveni’s regime and angry that they are not in favor with LGBT-rights. In 2021, it got postponed for the second time  because of COVID and ended by never getting organized and the whole awards disappearing.



There’s Afrima and Afrimma. But it is not the same. Apart Diamond Platinumz, I’ve never seen an artist bragging about having won several Afrimma awards, artists used to do after winning a Kora Awards or an awards of MAMA
