I’ve never seen a bandleader celebrating the creation of his band that much. From 1978 to 1998, Papa Wemba was doing it every year. And since his stay in Europe, he was making from it big events in Paris, especially from 1990.

Was this before or after Koffi Olomide released Noblesse Oblige?

Before. Because around the release of Noblesse Oblige, Papa Wemba and Koffi Olomidé were in bad terms.

Papa Wemba celebrated in most occasion the anniversary of Viva la Musica in Juin (his birthmoth). But this must be in February, because I see Koffi saying that he’s fine snd that the lootings in Kinshasa  were over. Back at that time there took a second series of lootings place in Kinshasa (January 1993). Also Bipoli at some point saying that he will get his proper event (sortie official) somewhere in April ‘93 to mark his return in Viva la Musica. It is crazy for me to hear Wemba explain that he, Bipoli and Evoloko used to be in the same class and that Bipoli’s sister used to be their French teacher.

It was a good concert. It was form this concert that Papa Wemba got the nickname “Formateur des Idoles” because of having made many stars. He would later name his solo album Foridoles as abbreviation of that nickname. It is seen as Wemba best solo album ever

Wemba had to invite Emeneya & Dindo to sing Signorina with him. The without them isn’t giving the same vibes. Dindo is missing for that tenor role during the chorus part “Nalela Signora” and to the do the role of the Muluba-dad before the sebene “Kah Kah”. Demukuse did his best to interpret Bongo Wende’s solo, who left a few months before to form Nouvelle Generation with Awilo, Luciana, Lidjo, Fafa and co. But you can feel that it’s not the same.

All women went crazy when Koffi came on stage. Did Stino and Koffi not like each other or did they had a problem ? Because the look that Stino gave, was like that Koffi used to be his enemy or was it just “litutu na cadre ya ideology”. I remember Stino also throwing a shot to Koffi in the song Invitation “Bino moko bolobaki kokende eza kokoma te. Kasi nga awa nde naza koya”. There is a point in the concert that Koffi present the dancers as “Quartier Latin Aile Paris”. In the same QL Aile Paris would sometimes ask the same Stino, his petit Reddy, Fafa and Jose Fataki in the late 80s to help back him in concerts he had in Paris, Switzerland, Belgium with his friend/mentor late Rigo Star and other session musicians. Btw what is the name of the French dancers with braids. I used to see her often in Soukous clips. What did she become ?

I don’t understand why Papa Wemba refused that let Demukuse record is own solo album. The song “Reponse ya ba Venants” was a huge succes in Europe. Despite not being record on disc. It would have helped to boost Viva la Musica more after the split with Nouvelle Generation along with Reddy’s Injustice. About the song it was a reaction to Modogo’s song Ba Venants, which was an attack of Congolese people living in Paris/France since the 1970s against Congolese people coming to Europe from 1985 till the 1990s. You would except that the generation of Ba Venants would have their own song against “generation ba ngulu” (those who came in Europe after 2000) and “ba ngulu” also having their own song against “ba kuya-kuya” those coming from Turkey, Greece and Maroc and vice-versa. But sadly the artists of today don’t have that kind of inspiration anymore to record such songs that reflect what is happening in our society

I was surprised to see Petit Makambo sing the legendary song Evenement on his own instead of Papa Wemba. He just had some problems to hit the high notes during the part “nasala nog nini eh”. There’s a part where Papa Wemba explain how he started his career in music. Saying that they were 3, but I was surprised that he didn’t mention the name of two others. They used often appear as dancers during concerts from 1979-1980. One of them is the Soukous-legend Lutchiana Mobulu. Back at that time they used to call him “Petit Mobulu”. I don’t know what happened to the third one and I don’t remember his name. From 1982, they only dancing them two “Petit Makambo” and “Petit Mobulu”. Petit Makambo would later have some succes as Soukous artists in West-Africa. Him here dancing with Lutchiana Mobulu during the sebene of Ceci Cela

You can people feeling nostalgic when Wemba started to sing Melina la Parisienne. Papa Wemba to think to also invite former guitarists when doing those anniversary instead of only focusing on singers. It would have been perfect if Huits Kilos was there to play those old licks.

I liked the duo Deese Mukangi did with Reddy, when started singing Zakina together. I couldn’t stop laughing the look Deese give to Reddy when Reddy started singing, what he should do to marry her since that doesn’t have enough money.

It is just a shame that the video stopped when they started singing MJ Ngoyi. Who was the bass player in this concert ? You could feel that there was strong cohesion beteeen him and Richacha. Also the sound of Richacha’s drum were special. Did they use any special effect for the drums ?
