yes and no apparently some of those passports can still be useful to groups for other members
and traditionnaly its the secretaries of groups who hold it to avoid musicians losing it
for example for wenge musica,secretary mbuta kiss still has every passport of werra,masela,makaba,jb,alain mpela, and co before the split
and also in the current years with the growing number of guys having chlidren in europe some try to stab the group in the back by retaining their passport and applying for visas
example of djino in bcbg who secretely tried  to get a visa for france while having got his passport to receive money in a money transfer agency
and also that system is like that because its the groups who have paid all those passports except maybe some musicians who were in other big bands before and travelled with them already

they get it and give it back normally, the reason why musicians rarely are given their passport back once they have left is that  leader consider every departure as a treason except the rare cases of the leader himself forcing them out indirectly or even more rare cases of musicians leaving the group with benediction of their leader
also when they were travelling to europe ,the fact musicians who leave groups and still have their passport in their hands applied for visas individually whereas they were identified in embassies as members of group x or y cause harm later on to those groups should those guy remain for long in europe(with the past reputation of illegal traffic,as for european embassies any musician who come to europe and remains instead of going to kin is a potential fake artist who came in exchange of money)
