He went from being a relatively neutral media producer in the late 80's and 90's, to being the figurehead behind the big fan clubs of the ndombolo era (fan club MM, fan club Viva, fan club Victoria, and on occasion QL).
Like Wemba said he revolutionized his role by becoming very involved with artists (pooling funds for trips, getting concert contracts, pooling mabanga names and money, fanfare events for artists in Paris like conferences, and heavy promotion). He also created new sorts of behind the scenes for concert videos.
At the same, time he was flip flopping his allegiance between artists who were in polemic and he made some of his older producer colleagues unhappy, undermining them by making certain releases exclusive to Mbetenge's shop. They also didn't like how he fueled polemic or some of his over the top actions like animals sacrifices in the middle of concerts.
I used to love going to his shop back then. He's still around but, everything has been idle for years. Incidentally, even YouTube and digital media have been slowly nailing the coffin for the once influential industry
