Whatever happened to Paty Bass after Quartier Latin Integral? He is such an underrated bassist, the reverb on his bassline were fantastic just like Rocky Blanchard's playing style from Koffi's V12.

he still is in europe and doing some serious session work from artists of several countries,he is one the rare to have remained an artist without an extra job

He lives in France. He does those standard jobs what most Congolese people do in Europe. It’s very rare to see him do some session work. He participated in Koffi’s Monde Arabe, Fally’s Arsenal des Belles Melodies,.. Back in 2005 he toured with Koffi in Europe with other former-QL members & Ferre. He participated to the Academia reunion-concert some months ago.

Oh really thought that he slowed down like many others. Ramazani is also very active and has his own studio.

lol i remember how scared soleil looked in that famous mirage appareance at grand hotel he felt the absolute need to keep commenting that  mirage is a petit frere ,maboko pona petit frere

Listen to what Koffi said before giving the mic to Mirage. So the true reason of the beef with Werra was because of Mirage not Ferre ? I remember Mirage saying that he had to join Maison Mere, but that he choose for QL

its both lol you know maison mere  once they missed out on mirage and later took miel who was their plan b they started attacking koffi a lot and it became worse when ferre joined i remember even once fally soleil and texas katadi were attacked straight after interview by angry maison mere fans

Texas Katadi was like Assitou Mbo, Alain Nzambe, Zingeti le Rasback and many other former-Koffi staff members victim of attack from the fans of their rivals. Back in 2006 he was hit with a stone when Maison Mere-fans disturbed the concert after that Koffi said that Werrason whore  fack Kassamoto-clothes.

So guys pretty much when QL went for the danger de mort tour the band was pretty much unstable and disintegrating, you had shella then mirage and ferre joining and then mboshi, champion and modogo rejoining  even mboshi said in his interview with ado that most musicians were against him, modogo and champion returning and ferre even stuck for mboshi in front of koffi and everyone and it was cause of Alya stepping in to tell koffi he can't let the musicians run his own band like that.

I remember that the press said that there was a second Academia coming when Koffi was touring in Europe with them thinking that they would never tour in Europe again because of the ngulu-affaire. Fally said talked about that situation indirectly 2 years ago and said that he had then to calm his friends down. But he didn't want to go deeper, because he said that he would talk about that in a documentary about his career. Those concerts of Koffi without QL, already started earlier. Before Ferre joining QL he performed in London without them only with Champion and musicians who were living in London. They were just jealous of Ferre and scared that their time in QL came to end after complaining alot about money.

 Before Koffi that came with Quartier Latin to Europe to perform at Palais des Congres they had difficulties to get visa's with then Steve Munsi bringing them through Sweden to the Schengen Area (the tour started there in Sweden and Ireland before coming in Paris). I was really dissapointed to not see Brigade with them. Brigade revealed that Koffi didn't want to take him to Europe, because he became very close to Fally and Koffi then thinking that they could form a new Academia with then the fight against Apocalyps in studio Ndiaye during the recording-sessions of Danger de Mort, making Koffi blacklist Brigade and leave him behind in Kinshasa. This while he had to animate in Fally's Droit Chemin

As interesting as it would have been for another offshoot of Quartier Latin to begin, I think history has shown that 5eme generation artist can't maintain long-term group; Academia, Les Marquis, and Universal Zangul.

I was really surprised that Bouro Mpela and Soleil Wanga could never reach the commercial success that Fally Ipupa enjoyed when he went solo. What happened?

Bouro had such good will after that collab album with his brother, but he squander that momentum with bad promotion.

Bouro had such good will after that collab album with his brother, but he squander that momentum with bad promotion.

It has nothing to do with 5eme generations artists. All shoot-off bands in the Congolese music-scene don't last longer then 2 years. First one was African Fiesta formed by Dr Nico and Tabu Ley in 1963 which did only 2 years before splitting in 2 camps (African Fiesta Sukisa & African Fiesta National which would become Afrisa in 1970). In the 3th generation we had Isifi Lokole of Evoloko Lay, Papa Wemba, Bozi and Mavuela formed in 1974 after leaving Zaiko who did only 11 months with Papa Wemba forming with Bozi & Mavuela Yoka Lokole which only did 1 year. In 1977 we had Karawa Musica of Esperant Kisangani, Bipoli and Jadot Cambogien who only 6 months after leaving Papa Wemba. In 1981 Langa Langa Stars who did 2 years with Roxy Tshimpaka, Bozi Boziana and Ben Nyamabo creating Choc Stars. In 1982 Victoria Eleison of the 12 Apostles who did only 1 year and then the band becoming that of Emeneya. Victoria Principal of Bipoli and rest of Victoria who did 7 months. Choc Stars with Bozi Boziana leaving after 2 years to form Anti Choc, Zaiko Familia Dei in 1988, Wenge Aile Paris, Extra Musica International.... there are many examples.


Soleil Wanga was just unlucky to not have a good manager/producer like Fally Ipupa, while his first album was one of the most awaited albums in 2009. So when his album flopped it was also immediatly over for him. Bouro Mpela was a long time out of the spolights. He made the mistake to return to Quartier Latin when Ferre left Quartier Latin. He spent only 5 months or something like that and then left again. He was ready to sign with a big producer but someone send letters to that recordlabel (Koffi or Fally, I think Koffi) to not produce his album Vice de Procedure. So he strugelled months long to find a producer. Then he met 'Les Duo d Enfer' (Papy and Adrien Mukiadi) who accepted to produce his album. But his album was not well promoted and flopped very hard. Alot of people weren't even awaire about that album. After a project with former QL-members in 2009 he decided to settle himself in the USA. With him giving some concerts and playbacks there along with Jordan Kusa and sometimes with Alain Mpela. But not long after that he was victim of a big car-accident and almost died. Then he dissapeard for a long time and reappeared in 2011 again. With him then talking about his album Bokoko in Kinshasa and giving some extrats of a salsa-version of Calvaire. Two later he started a relationship with Binda Bass's ex girlfriend Leatitia Melody (Binda used to be his best friend. Congolese musicians are so weird lol) and decided to change his project in a duo-album. Then he dissapeared again for a long time until he decided to rejoin Quartier Latin again in 2015.

Lol its seems they made peace i saw him in an interview give a big shout out to binda bass giving him some funny nicknames and he revealed that binda played most of his album and pathy some songs

People like to say only fally and brigade are successful QL graduates but I disagree sam tshintu/academia had a really good run that was ruined by the ngulu affaire and most of the former QL are in Europe as session artists

Nobody only Ferre. Brigade had only succes with Affaire a Rando. Brigade is lucky to have joined Maison Mere, if he didn't join them, then he would be finished like CNN.


Back in the days youngsters didn't want to Quartier Latin and prefered Nouvelle Ecriture, Wenge BCBG and Wenge Maison Mere. Because people were then saying that if you join QL Koffi would use your power for  in a mystical way for his fame and that you will be finished before even starting you solo-career with people always giving examples of Suzuki, Willy Bula,... Saying that he had a chambre with mirrors of all QL-members and he's controlling their lives. Back in the days musicians of Nouvelle Ecriture, BCBG and Maison Mere were mocking musicians of Quartier Latin for that. Saying in that they were already death. With also attacking  also attacking Koffi saying that he would never be bigger then Papa Wemba. Because Wemba made big stars  like Reddy Amisi, King Kester Emeneya, Esperant Kisangani,etc. while his former musicians are already finished. I remember that Sankara attacked Ferre that he would be finished like Suzuki and Sam Tshintu.

Academia did only 3 years or something like that. Not 15, 10 years being non-stop on the top. They started losing their way already when they released Viagra. With the album flopping Lebou, Pathy Bass and Suzuki leaving. People saying they were finished and death. But then being lucky with 4 Coins Kandala, then again losing their way until that they last with 3 persons in 2005 and Koffi asking them to rejoin with them all accepting, except Sam who was still holding a grudge against Koffi for everything he witnessed.

Maybe if J.B. Mpiana did a feature on Sukuzi's debuting album like Wemba did on his solo, it could have bolstered interest into his project in addition to his appearance at Zenith of 1999.

What happened between Sam and Koffi that was so bad? I thought he left because he became overly ambitious for Koffi's liking.

I'm surprised people would rather work for Wemba and Werrason than Koffi! We can't even speak about Werrason's lack of ethics, but at least Wemba was genuine guy (inspite of his shortcomings).

Werrason from Koffi ? Werrason didn't use to be a member of Quartier Latin. He came from Wenge 4x4 and had already made his name. Having hit songs like Coco Madima, Heritier Itele, Surprise Kapangala, Kaskin, Nicky D, Tcha Tcho, Kalayi Boeing and Sourire des Vendeurs on his name.

People were prefering Wemba & Werrason above Koffi, because you would then get more space to express yourself in Maison Mere, Nouvelle Ecriture and even Wenge BCBG. Listen to bandalbums like 'L, A La Une, Somo Trop and compare it to Pas de Faux Pas, Magie,.. You will see that singers of Nouvelle Ecriture had alot of space to express themselves and they mostly singing by their own. Papa Wemba didn't even sing in 'L, he sung only on Safari, a had a short vocal on Ba Yankee and did some mabanga's on Extra Large. But in the albums of Quartier Latin, Koffi was always singing the most. His singers had never the chance to sing a song by themselves. Before Academia, QL-members had only 2 songs in his solo album to put vocals on. This why people were critizing him alot. Which made him let Quartier Latin-singers sing alot in his solo-album Attentat and also later in Effrakata, but his style on bandalbums didn't change and people were still critizing him. Alot of people were scared to join Quartier Latin with those rumors of him using powers of his musicans for his fame.

Hahaha you don't know vieux Bokoul. He was never paying his musicians, only on rare occasions. That's why his band was also splitting (Nouvelle Generation, Nouvelle Ecriture, Langa Langa Stars, Victoria Eleison, Karawa Musica,....) with his members always being unhappy. Wemba was leaving his band sometimes for 6 months or 8 behind in Kinshasa with them giving concerts, but not receiving money because his staffmembers and his wife Amazone were sharing that money for themselves. Listen to the song Lidjo Kwempa made against him.


Even if JB would then it would change nothing for Suzuki. He was already finished and nobody was taking him serious.

Like I said months ago. Sam Tshintu didn't want to leave Quartier Latin. He returned with Koffi to Africa and performed in Zimbabwe and Tanzania. He left because they warned him that they would be fired if they returned to Kinshasa. Being already informed that they recruited musicians in Kinshasa. Which made him leave Quartier Latin. Koffi did everything not let them succeed and many things happened behind the scenes. He didn't forget alot those things he witnessed all those years, that's why he didn't want to rejoin Quartier Latin. But the rest needed money, some were broke, other didn't want do to jobs and decided to rejoin the band. Suzuki swore in 1999 and also later in Academia that he would never in his life rejoin Quartier Latin, but in 2006 he accepted Koffi's offer.

Koffi don't also have good ethics. If you are a new members he will treat you well, but after 2 years he will show his true face. Ask Suzuki, Lola Muana about that in private. And if you touch one of his dancers, then it's finished for you. We all saw what happened with JF Ifonge, Ile de Cambodge, Willy Bula, CNN,.... All those bandleaders are all the same.

Willy Bula and Cambodge got caught up with Koffi's dancers? Kiekiekie! I thought they got phased out by newer and "better" members like Mamale Tupac (who came in the fall of 1997) and Titina Al Capone (who came after the release of Effrakata).

What I meant by Werrason receiving a co-sign by Koffi was that Koffi gave moral and possibly financial support towards Werrason around the time that Wenge Musica 4X4 split (I believe Koffi got a shoutout at the end of Chantal Switzerland). This is similar to how Papa Wemba took J.B. Mpiana under his wing during his first solo album. In the video below; you will see Adolphe, Werrason, and Ferre Gola at the 3:18 minute mark and onward.



By the way, did the other members of Masion Mere get along Quartier Latin? I suppose they couldn't be too friendly since it was serious competition back then...
