Wow, nostalgia

Studio IAD was state of the art for an African studio back then. Check out the infamous electric drum set

What a big studio, the mixing room looks relaxing.

Mobutu was jealous about the Studio IAD and wanted a build a bigger one in Kinshasa and apparently gave Tabu Ley the mission to look for modern equipment in Europe along with another musician (I don't remember who). Mobutu then gave them a cheque of more then 1 millions dollars and Tabu Ley then ran away with it in Europe hahahahahahah. Gina Efonge and Maray Maray would do the same thing 15 years later.

Does anyone know where the electric drum is from I'm searching for it?

No, until this day. Don't you see Congolese artists always complaining about that in interviews that they don't have modern studios in Kinshasa ? Having always to record in Europe which is very expensive (having to buy tickets and visa's) or record in Kinshasa in bad conditions.

Very expensive, I agree the Kinshasa studios do not have a good quality

It’s a variation of the Simmons SDS. Came out in the early 80’s, and became popular in rock music; the sound was very novel, or course now it’s dated

Sad that great writers like Sylvain Bemba and Mobyem Mikanza died so young. I wonder what caused their early deaths

Very good documentary; it really brings you into the life then. Unfortunately life was so bad in the early 90’s that music, fashion, and beer were escapes for common people - being low cost or free if you were at the right place at the right time
