Yes Beniko did many session work for other artists back in the early 90s, but he was also a member of Zaïko Familia Dei at that time who were doing long tours in Europe & the US. Beniko would still continue with session when he joined Quartier Latin. He played for example on Reddy’s album Prudence and Carlyto Lassa’s album Africa na Moto. During his time in Zaïko Langa Langa he dis also session work for Koffi Olomidé in Ngounda & Lady Bo and for Espérant Kisangani. It’s very normal for Congolese guitarists to do session work for other artists when they are on tour even when they are Kinshasa.

About Beniko talking about composition, a song can have 2, 3 and in some cases even 4 composers. But in Congo if you are the author, they give put also immediatly the label of composter, while in the most cases they don't even created the main sound or guitar partition. Those things went already wrong from 1 day. Because those Greek and Portugese people who were doing those music-business in Congo, where always writing on the 45s (compositeur: Mbala Lukombo), not even author. That continued until the 80s. Which made people in the Congolese community say until this day "aza grand compositeur" if you are a big songwriter.

This isn't the Beniko I know from the numerous videos I've watched him speak.

I'm not good in Lingala, just grasping a few words. But from the last 45 minutes of this interview, you'll note that there's sadness in his eyes, there's sadness in his voice, there's sadness in his posture........ I nearly cried.

My problem with that interview is the fact that they constantly talk about bad exepriences.
Ado could ask him about the best song did he creat, some sudio stories, his relationship with past colleagues, good experiences, best travel, his lp « l’homme de zekete ».
But anyway i have to thank ado to bring that legend. One of the best guitarist in africa and my personal favorite.

Yeah in reality ado's philosophy is trying to be one of the guys who exposes the reality of congolese music as it is,and "expose" the lies musicians got us used to for years,motema mabe ya ba leaders and all that,where most other colleagues "contribute" to the system
as strange as it is,its never the videos with 99 per cent of positive stories which had buzz (patou solo,bogus,roi david,mamale...)

Is a excellenet guitarists, but not the greatest. Because you have also Roxy Tshimpaka, Bongo Wende, Rigo Star Bamundele, Pepe Felly Manuaku, Nene Tchackou and in the past Dr Nico, Franco Luambo Makiadi, Bavon Marie Marie, etc.

You're right. To be honest, picking the greatest congolese guitarist is an extremely harsh task, I might even say it's impossible: too many great guitarists. But if we were about to have that discussion, Beniko would necessarily be in it.

Personally, he's my favorite.
