Like I explained there isn't a Congolese artist that had received a real gold record (Disque d'Or). Go to the SNEP website and you will see that nobody had received a gold record in France. 2 years ago we had we had topics about that on our forum, when people discovered that Congolese artists (Koffi Olomide, JB Mpiana, Werrason, etc.) all lied to us years long, after that Fally Ipupa received his first Single d'Or (Gold single) certified by SNEP. With pages as Labouche Autorisee, Ndombolhino Official, all talking about that and guys like Frank Stemay, Mbuta Likasu, Thierry Mombaya making analyse-videos about it. Jeannot Ne Nzau Dipo explained during the analyse with Frank Stemay and Mbuta Likasu in details how Gerard Akueson (Abeti Masikini's manager) made an arrangement with SACEM for African artists to get "fake' gold records in France since that it was hard for them to get a gold record in France. Back in the early 80s there weren't alot of African people living in France and you had then to sold 100.000 records in France which was almost impossible for them. So with that arrangement they made they had just to sold 50.000 records around the world (Europe, Africa, America,.) with the cd/discs made in that factory in Germany who was working with SACEM.

No, that was in the USA. It got certified by the RIAA. Each country has a different rule. In the US you had to sold 500.000 copies at that time. Papa Wemba's gold record was mainly due to the Fa Fa Fa Fa-single which was in the past gold by Blues legend Otis Redding (RIP) and the tour he made with Peter Gabriel in the USA in 1997/98.

https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disque_de_certification

Here they wrote in French how you have many to have to sold in Belgium, USA, Germany, U.K., etc. to get a gold record, platina record, diamond record in their country.

The popularity of American artists around the world made them get multipes platium records in different countries (Australia, France, USA, South Africa,..) with their house and record label being full with it. Artists like Jay Z, Mariah Carey and Alicia Keys have special rooms made for it.

King Kester Emeneya was saying it years long until is death that apart Papa Wemba there wasn't a Congolese artist who received a gold record. But nobody was believing him, they thought that he was jealous. Until that everybody discovered the secret. Back in 1999 they made released a VHS on the market called "Dossier Disque d'Or" with Zacharie Bababaswe and King Kester Emeneya visiting SACEM to look if those gold records of Koffi Olomide and JB Mpiana were real.

Youtube views counts, but not heavy like streaming sites like Itunes, Tidal, Deezer and Spotify. Also it had then be from the official youtube-channel.

Streaming counts since 2016, before that you had just to sell cds. But despite streaming, its not raining gold records, platinum and diamond records in France like in the past. Artists like Maitre Gims are suspecting of frauding with streaming. So SACEM had decided since last year that streaming only counts if you logs in with an official account.

https://www.mouv.fr/rap-fr/maitre-gims-expose-la-technique-pour-tricher-sur-les-vues-et-le-streaming-video-296272

European artists make now money by touring alot with those tickets having huge prices.

I am so shocked right now so that means that Wemba is the biggest Congolese artist to be ever known, because targeting the American market aint easy...do you have a interview king kes saying that?.. Also i thank you for informing me that. All of it was for buzz then

Thanks @Mvulusi96.
Here is the interview that Djoka Kabengele did I think in 2017. He confirms what you have stated above. I initially thought he was saying it (the fact that all those Disque D'or were fake) because he had fallen out with the likes of Mukulu.

At minute 19:55 seconds.

For me Papa Wemba's isn't the biggest Congolese artist ever. For me its Franco Luambo Makiadi followed by Tabu Ley.

It difficult to find those interviews since that Vieux'Kes was recording multiples interviews in 2012 & 2013. But if I remember well he said the same thing in the famous interview he made with Marius Muhunga before he died, but I can't find that interview anymore on youtube.

It was not buzz, but to made look their cv better and to impress the Congolese and African public with it which made other artists not wanting to stay behind. For example Fally's "fake" gold records of Droit Chemin and Arsenal des Belles Melodies opened alot of doors for him in the showbizz world.

I remember Werrason dreaming about getting getting a gold record of Kibuisa Mpimpa in a month and a platium record for the same album. Ordering JPS and his donors to buy a big amount of discs of Kibuisa Mpimpa (having then to sell 300.000 copies in France to get a platinum record). The press in Kinshasa and Paris had then already reported that Werrason received a gold record in France, saying then that they would give it to him at the Double-Zenith event along with the Solola Bien-gold record. But I was then surprised about Werrason not getting it at his Double-Zenith event and after that it became very silent, discovering on the end that it was just to impress the public.

Who are your top 5 biggest congelese artist in order? So many lies and lies and lies i saw on Wikipedia that A2BM sold like 100K in a month like c'mon nobody is believing that crap. After recently watching the double zenith i too was shocked too not see Kibuisa get a "gold" record which album between had the most impact in your honest opinion (asking because im 22)

1. Franco Luambo Makiadi
2. Tabu Ley
3. Papa Wemba/Koffi Olomide (sometimes i put Koffi above Wemba and there are days that I put Wemba above Koffi)
5. Pepe Kalle

Followed by King Kester Emeneya, Clan Wenge (JB & Werra), Grand Kalle, Bozi Boziana, Lutumba Simaro, etc.

According to RFI, Fally Ipupa sold more than 50.000 copies a month with the album becoming gold, because since 2009 the new rule was 50.000 copies in France for a gold record (from 2005-2009 it was 75.000 copies). But there wasn't a official ceremony or party for that like when he received a gold record for Droit Chemin. Then in 2011 it was reported that Arsenal des Belles Melodies had sold more than 250.000 copies and became a platinum record. It can be possibe that they sold alot of discs in the first month of its release because A2BM was then in 2009, the most awaited album of the year. But I think that 50.000 copies was just a publicity-stunt.

Zaiko's album Nippon Banzai (1986) was close to become a gold record, but they weren't selling album (na ndenge ya desorde) like the way Congolese people say, so it didn't became a gold record. That album sold so well everybody bought it white people, community of people coming the French West-Indies and African people. Zaiko even performed with that album at the French channel TF1 and Sony BMG (CBS at that time) offered them a contract to join their label.

What do you mean with impact ? The influence or terms of succes. Because if it influence then I would say Papa Wemba's Fula Ngenge. Because all bandleaders copied that concept of various music-styles in a solo album (ndombolo, rumba, world-music, hiphop, salsa, folkloric music)  in solo albums who were released after it (Attentat, TH, Kibuisa Mpimpa).

If its about term of succes then I would say Solola Bien, Kibuisa Mpimpa was also a huge succes, but it wasn't the same like Solola Bien which succes was very huge and the generic becoming one of the most danced of the Ndombolo-era. Almost everybody of the Congolese community had that disc at home, even JB-fans.

@mvulusi96

Since now we have digital streaming, will Congolese artist recieve genuine plaques for album sales? As of today, where do we fall short in terms of getting recognition. I see that many of clips from our musicians official Youtube channels recieve views by the hundreds of thousands and their albums are on Spotify/Tidal.

I feel like European music industry doesn't want to acknowledge successful artist birthed in Africa, cause they seem to always move the goal post.

yeah there is something strange, for example the most popular francophone artists of africa,we can pick for example fally, toofan duo, late arafat, none of them picked true disque d'or( although fally managed single d'or with booba feat, and possibly with eloko oyo i have a little doubt) arafat put mad pressure of his fans  and even ranting at them in his videos to buy cds so that he brings first ivorian-based disque d'or since the days where his late father used to be arranger of big stars and could not even achieve 50K cd sold but look at millions of fans mourning him now around africa
one thing i want to add about the fake disque d'ors of the past is that producers also "gave symbolically" disque d'or to their artists based on estimation of cds from piracy sold in streets for little money
i have once hear for example monsieur simon say that on feux de l'amour there was over 200000 fake cds sold in africa

Piracy in the congelese music is mad messed up. Just checked the site and it says that fally got a gold one with booba, and the track he did with keblack and naza.

That's not a disque d'or (gold record), but a single d'or (gold single). I guess you know what the difference between the two is. Single d'or is a single what went gold and a disque d'or is an album that went gold.

That's how all Congolese people had discovered that all disque d'or were fake when Fally received a certified gold single SNEP with then all those analyse videos from youtube-journalists starting and all those facebook pages coming with those screenshots of the SNEP-website 2 years ago. With most Fally-fans also being happy because they could then prove that Fabregas "double disque d'or" was fake.

yeah, 1986-88 were the peak-years of Zaiko before the split with Zaiko Familia Dei. Also 1973-74 before the split with Isifi Lokole when Evoloko Lay, Papa Wemba and Bozi left and 1980-81 before the creation of Langa Langa Stars when Evoloko, Bozi and Djo Mali left Zaiko.

Technically, Fally is the only Congo-based artist to actually go gold, albeit with a single rather than an album.

Would you say that the rampant rise in piracy gave rise to the mabanga phenomena as we know it today where artists have to pre-sale their songs before release whereas previously mabanga was not as monetised as it is today?

clearly yes, nowadays artists can earn as much on selling a song to a rich donor as what they earn through sales, downloads and so on of a whole album which is why artists have increased the number of songs, since they are in self production mode for most, what they spend to record is a lit bit inferior to what they earn through mabanga

If you think about it Mabanga and song given to domors are two of the smartest way to make money. Wheter the song is a flop or not you are already being paid

But excessive mabanga can ruins songs

back in the days when Papa Wemba and King Kester Emeneya were living Kinshasa in 80s it was not very lucrative. They were doing mabanga and songs just for some expensive clothes. In 70s alot of songs were just done for free. In late 80s they started to get some money for it if they went to Europe, but not alot like these days. It came more lucrative when those Bana Lunda entered the game (Tchatcho Mbala, Wabelo Rango, etc.).

Papa Wemba was a kind of broke in his first years living in Paris (1987-1989), so in Modogo's album Place Vendome they started to look for mabanga customers, starting in that song to sing sentences of people's name, but without going outside the subject of the song what we see nowadays or adding a new subject in the same song.

I watched a King Kester Emeneya interview where he says the mabanga phenomena as we know it today began with this song for Willo Mondo.
https://youtu.be/MYiZiiv0bIQ
How true is it?

@Manzambi I think it's a smart way too but again I think as an artist, you have to be creative in the way you mention the names or the song will be boring. Like the names have to rhyme with the other lyrics in a song. And yeah excess mabanga is not good.

So what really happens for the song owners if the song turns out to be a flop? Am sure there should some reparations one way or another. Do the song owners have a pre-recording listen to the song or its up to the musician to chose the best song for this or that donor? I have noticed that the likes of Tabou Fatou have some nice songs to their name whether be it by Ferre, Fally or JB Mpiana etc.

I have noticed that the likes of Tabou Fatou have some nice songs to their name whether be it by Ferre, Fally or JB Mpiana etc.

yeah its true. Mabanga already started in 70s with Soki Brothers and Zaiko, but it was then that they were giving to 3 people in a whole song. For example when Papa Wemba just started Viva La Muisca he would gave in a song Ebale Mbonge only shout-out (which was then Koffi Olomide "Olomide!!!!"). The mabanga (citing like more than 10/20 people in a song) started with King Kester Emeneya in 1985 with the Willo Mondo-album when he met guys like Anicet Pedro (RIP), Modogo Gianfranco Ferre, etc. in Paris, also known as "Bana Firenze", they gave him then alot of clothes. I think that it was the same trip when he came back with his "pomper injection-car" (a red bmw).

The same Emeneya came with that style of singing names from 5:13 min. JB Mpiana copied that vocal but I forgot in which song.

I think that there isn't any Congolese artist in Congo that has been mistrested, humiliated and belittled as much as Emeneya, despite having credit for a lot of things people and other leader in general (surprisingly even Werra whowas Emeneya's biggest fan between the leaders) never credited him until he died unlike Papa Wemba whi was way more respected than the King Emeneya. And it is sad thinking about how his life ended ahead of time his son paralyzed and many many ither tragedies that Emeneya faced @Cavalier Soltaire flop can happens but the even more smarter way is making private sings for donors. That is like the ultimate money move

hahaha yeah. First when he arrived he borrowed the same red BMW from his cousin Jose Mubiala, because his car when then with the boat on the way to Matadi. Then when the car arrived in Matadi, they put it on a freight train to Kinshasa and a truck bringing it from the trainstation to Bandalungwa where he used to live. It was a big event when it arrived in Bandal, there was a big crowd event to watch how Emeneya went to test his car.

When King Kester Emeneya arrived in Kinshasa in 1997 until 2010 when he became sick for the first, journalists used often to attack him for not having an expensive car like JB Mpiana, Werrason and Koffi Olomide who were after every Europe-tour coming back with a new one and bragging about it (espcially Koffi). Emeneya then claimed they didn't bought those car, but that those cars were autolease (which was also true) and some of them were stolen by their fans living in Europe.

Werrason used to praise Emeneya often in interviews from the start of Maison Mere in 1997 until Kibuisa Mpimpa. After performing at Bercy, Werrason said in an interview that he felt Emeneya presence in him.

Emeneya was like a mentor of him and Werrason used before Intervention Rapide often to visit him at King Ranch. Emeneya himself was also often praising him interviews calling him "petit frere propre". He defended Werrason against Wemba, since that Werrason couldn't react because of Wemba being elder, by saying in the song Washington by saying "Mopaya akoki kosomba zamba te" as reponse to Wemba's attack to Werrason in the song Maria who said "kala te nako somba zamba, ba niama nioso bazala ya nga". Then after Kibuisa Mpimpa something went wrong behind the scences (I don't know what), but those shegues hanging around King Ranch started to call Werrason a fake guy and an ungrateful person with Emeneya in private. I remember Emeneya once being furious in 2001 saying that the Werra-JB beef was fake and revealing that they meet eachother in the night.

In 2004 when Emeneya was promoting his upcoming album "Avantage ya Goal" (which became Jour Le Plus Long), he said that nobody who release their album before Avantage ya Goals, because his album will be the bomb, etc. and Francis Kakonde then asking even your "petit frere propre" and Emeneya then jocking, he will say "everybody want to c*ck feel me" (I wonder if he knew what he was saying in English). Then Sam Pengo Mbey (who was a Emeneya-hater) asked to Werrason if he would release his album before that of Emeneya and instead of being diplomatic or jocking, he immediatly said seriously "in music there isn't family, a big brother or little brother", this thing made Emeneya more furious in private and also his fans with them having regrets of having supported Werrason in the early days of Wenge Maison Mere. In 2011 when Emeneya recovered, an journalist asked him if Werrason visited him in the hospital and why they weren't close again in the past and Emeneya reacting with proverb and the journalist having something like ok (not understanding what he wanted to say with that).
