I have seen posts about it by why is this interview that a big deal? Beniko gives interviews here and there. Why is this big noise around it?

Because Beniko is a legend and Ado is one of the few Congolese Journalist who managed to rack many viewers to his interviews. I think he is the most famous Congolese Journalist

He called Attentat the most mediocre solo album of Koffi Olomide. But he not the only one who said that, because there are many Koffiphiles who don´t like that album. But I like that album (not the radio version). I don´t believe that Koffi just recorded Attenat in South Africa to punish Popolipo, but I think that Koffi was fearing that those new musicians (Fally, Soleil, Spino and co) would ran away if he would record it in France also wanting to perform immediatly at Bercy as first Paris-concert after the succes of Zenith & Bercy.

That story about Jonas Savimbi shocked me, they could have been death there with the Angolan airforce bombing the place. How where guys like Tchatcho Mbala feeling comfortable to work at places like that and earning money of blooddiamonds. Koffi is very evil, you are paid 400.000 dollars by Savimbi, but you give Beniko just 200 dollars.

Ado is so stupid for the way he wanted to insist Beniko to say the names of the Zaiko-admins. I thought that he would finally explain what led to the split of Zaiko and why he joined Zaiko Familia Dei, but they didn't go into it. Towards the end of the interview after finishing Koffi's part he was looking very sad.

I remember that song of Niama ya Zamba. There were many songs who were censored by Mobutu, thinking that they were singing about him. Until Mobutu died he never found the grave of his dad. It has been said that his dad came from Togo. I'm sure that Ado didn't knew what Beniko meant with PF (President Fondateur), just saying yes.

I liked the drum sound, it made it sound like a live concert. In my opinion it was along with Sanction, the best drum sound of all recorded albums in 1999. Just listen to Victoire & Malanda Ngombe.

Since Zaiko wasnt available Koffi and his group got picked... after all the trouble the risk thru, they played two concert and Koffi gave Beniko $200(as they agreed in contract) but as they were also asking money to other donors close to Savimbi  one told them Savimbi gave Koffi $400K( He organized a reception for the band but Koffi brought only female dancers)

You forgot to add the way they went from Kinshasa to the town where Savimbi living, going with a military plane and that there wasn’t airport when landing, but just a lawn. Then Koffi and his dancers being brought to a good place where they slept and Beniko & Quartier Latin sleeping at a place where you had just simple mattresses. They were also scared because the place where they slept was a place where all buildings were ruin of the way they were bombed. Also for the way seeing people without arms and suddenly the Angolan Air Force started to fire bombs. It was a trip full with risks.

Is he the greatest guitarist of Congo?

Is a excellenet guitarists, but not the greatest. Because you have also Roxy Tshimpaka, Bongo Wende, Rigo Star Bamundele, Pepe Felly Manuaku, Nene Tchackou and in the past Dr Nico, Franco Luambo Makiadi, Bavon Marie Marie, etc.

You're right. To be honest, picking the greatest congolese guitarist is an extremely harsh task, I might even say it's impossible: too many great guitarists. But if we were about to have that discussion, Beniko would necessarily be in it.

Personally, he's my favorite.

Lol. King Kester was always an adventurer. So he joined Langa Langa Stars and attended the official presentation of the group and left within a week then when asked by Vieux Beniko if he was part of Langa Langa Stars he called it a "faux orchestra". :D

Ah, but why are we Africans like this? I felt bad at that part where he said the sponsors/promoters told Zaiko Langa Langa memebers including all musicians that there success was not equivalent to how they were living (basically poor living conditions) and then they proposed to get them land in Kin and build all the musicians decent houses that would match the success they were currently enjoying. But that idea was shot down by non other than President Jossart saying to the sponsors literally that "you are being too nice". Obviously this is because the Leader and the administrators saw an opportunity to get that money and share it among themselves without the ordinary musicians. Explains a lot why Africa as a continent is years behind in terms of development. This is basically the mentality of our leaders from time we got independence. Mawa trop.

Emeneya left because he couldn’t stand Evoloko. Evoloko apparently said that he had to cut if hear if he wanted to perform with them before their first concert at Bar-vis a vis. Then suddenly Wemba visited him with Franco Makiadi, trying to convince him to rejoin Viva La Musica. With Emeneya replying that he would never rejoin if they don’t managed to get Dindo Yogo (who was his best friend) and Huits Kilo. Dindo’s dad refused the offer, but Huits Kilo accepted and they managed also to get Patcho Star back.

Popolipo also once told that story of how they all left with Emeneya during an interview with Addy Londolé, saying that the late Fafa de Molokaï was drunk and calling Wemba faux vieux hahahah. But he was the first to rejoin. According Veve the project ended from day1, because Wemba accused him for wanting to destabilize his band and Verckys immeditaly sacrificed himself to get Wemba’s trust back by showing him the list of all musicians who left and Wemba going to their houses one by one.

Lol. I get the sense that the 3rd generation of Congolese musicians as much as they had their own faults but they never kept grudges for a long time. In this generation of Clan Wenge which musicians would dare openly label the leader "faux leader" and tomorrow that same leader even allows you back in his orchestra.

This interview should have been minimum 3hrs maybe part one and two. Vieux Poli had so many stories and anecdotes to share but Ado didnt seem to fully capitalise on him being willing to talk. That story about how Beniko asked Papa Wemba after he came back from Europe if he had a chance of being interviewd on radio while in Europe and Papa Wemba then saying yes i was interviewed by Jean Stock and Koffi and Beniko laughing about it every time they met because they were sure that Vieux Bokul was trying to hype himself when most likely this Jean Stock animator never existed. :D

I dont think beniko’s a liar but in the ultimatum booklet, it aint writted « auteur compositeur de toutes les chansons : koffi olomide »
Maybe he was talking about v12 but if it is, I dont know why he went to zaiko in 97.

Ado yuhe could ask him about familia dei, espacially about madame zoro, one of the best seben ever for me & his role in viagra

He forgot because its already 25 years ago. He left because, after releasing Ultimatum, he went to SACEM and discovered that his song Lilas was credited to Koffi Olomide and not only his own song. But all the songs of Quartier Latin who were credited to Modogo, Sam and co. It made him furious. When he asked Koffi about why he did that, Koffi insulted him which made him cry. When they returned to Kinshasa, he left and later on joined Zaiko Nkolo Mboka after being contacted by Patsheli Madilu (RIP) and Nyoka Longo.

I don't know if you know actu du net, but they once made a video showing that the songs of Affaire d'Etat and Force de Frappe are at SACEM all credited to Koffi, getting the money of Fally, Bouro, Felly, Mamale and co.

yeah the legal papers. He said the booklet, but it was mistake. I think that I forgot, because he doesn't follow anything of Quartier Latin since he left. Yeah he was really broken, he didn't go into the details how the other stuff that happened before and after Bercy. Also how Koffi went away with his passeport giving it to a ngulu, saying to the guy to marry a woman with European papers with the name Beniko Popolipo, just to do everything to get him never ever again in Europe back and how he got chased away from his house he was renting in Lingwala, since that it was on Koffi's name. (the same stuff happened to Do Akongo).

Yes, you are 100% right about that. This attitude should be changed, that leaders of any kind has no solidarity towards people they control. This is why things go hard in Congo. Leaders only focus on collecting wealth for themselves.

Yes Beniko did many session work for other artists back in the early 90s, but he was also a member of Zaïko Familia Dei at that time who were doing long tours in Europe & the US. Beniko would still continue with session when he joined Quartier Latin. He played for example on Reddy’s album Prudence and Carlyto Lassa’s album Africa na Moto. During his time in Zaïko Langa Langa he dis also session work for Koffi Olomidé in Ngounda & Lady Bo and for Espérant Kisangani. It’s very normal for Congolese guitarists to do session work for other artists when they are on tour even when they are Kinshasa.

About Beniko talking about composition, a song can have 2, 3 and in some cases even 4 composers. But in Congo if you are the author, they give put also immediatly the label of composter, while in the most cases they don't even created the main sound or guitar partition. Those things went already wrong from 1 day. Because those Greek and Portugese people who were doing those music-business in Congo, where always writing on the 45s (compositeur: Mbala Lukombo), not even author. That continued until the 80s. Which made people in the Congolese community say until this day "aza grand compositeur" if you are a big songwriter.

This isn't the Beniko I know from the numerous videos I've watched him speak.

He's usually jovial, humorous, charismatic........

I'm not good in Lingala, just grasping a few words. But from the last 45 minutes of this interview, you'll note that there's sadness in his eyes, there's sadness in his voice, there's sadness in his posture........ I nearly cried.  :'( :'( :'(

Mawa trop.  :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

My problem with that interview is the fact that they constantly talk about bad exepriences.
Ado could ask him about the best song did he creat, some sudio stories, his relationship with past colleagues, good experiences, best travel, his lp « l’homme de zekete ».
But anyway i have to thank ado to bring that legend. One of the best guitarist in africa and my personal favorite.

The problem with Ado is he likes to talk more about Negative experiences rather than Positives. There’s so much more he could’ve asked him but didn’t.

Yeah in reality ado's philosophy is trying to be one of the guys who exposes the reality of congolese music as it is,and "expose" the lies musicians got us used to for years, motema mabe ya ba leaders and all that, where most other colleagues "contribute" to the system
as strange as it is,its never the videos with 99 per cent of positive stories which had buzz (patou solo, bogus, roi david,mamale...)

Personally, he's my favorite.

loooooooooooool guys the 90 2000 generations will tell you all those names are way behind kapaya and that nobody has ever had a more succesful solo than his effect on " eh wenge"

Especially that "ofingi nga, omifingi yo moko" who’s Maison Mere fanatic.
Oooooooh THAT GUY! I see him EVERYWHERE! He's always trolling on BCBG Concert videos loool! That guy is living the in the late 90s/early 2000s when the Wenge polémique was at its highest!
